(Part 3) It looks like the dealer thet worked on this bike originally is the cause of all the problems! The continuing saga of the Yamaha V-Max that has apparently been fixed by the local dealer, it hasn't. what a complete disaster. It gets worse before it gets better. Did I make a mistake? No I didn't!

Wow. Imagine how screwed you would be if you were just going on the conjecture of the previous mechanic. You'd never think to look at the ECU if they said they'd just replaced it. Very powerful knowledge you have with the being able to use the oscilloscope in this scenario

I have a 98 model with the single pick up. I had a similar problem with mine. After chasing back the wiring and checking the sensors and stuff I finally put it down to the igniter box. I got one from DYNA TEC in the states. Sorted the problem and completely changed the power delivery for the better.

I fucking love these videos! The oscilloscope is a little over my head (because I've never used one before) but very easy to understand once explained. Keep them up. And no you're not boring me at all explaining the phased rulers, it's all very interesting. You did the same with the bimota and fuel injection events.

the rod in the crank, is to control the flow of oil, as they need to drill larger further into the crank and is common on Yamaha V4 engines

Best motorcycle channel on KZbin. I've had dealings with Carmo Electronics who have repaired the ecu on that bike. I've had them repair ecu's on outboard engines. Hope you manage to find a replacement.

You're right about the ignition. I had a TT250 that didn't have a key, just a push button to kill the engine. I had just ridden it home and was ripping the clutch out. I turned the basket with the ratchet and it started. Well, that set a cat amongst the chickens. There was stuff flying everywhere. No injuries, lesson learned though.

competant dealership service ceased existing 20 years ago. theyre no longer interested or able to teach anything beyond what was covered in their apprentices training program. "senior" mechanics are no longer interested in sharing knowledge on lazy staff who just want to take that knowledge elsewhere. "knowledge shared is power lost"

Can I make a small suggestion? The stator cover.... looks like m6 bolts. Go get some m6x75mm caps head bolts (partial thread) and cut off the heads... say 5 or 6 of them. Use them as guides to remove/reinstall the stator cover. Helps prevent that magnetic "suck" by guiding the cover straight. So, take out 5 (or 6) cover bolts, install these guide studs, remove the remaining bolts and the stator cover won't "bash" when removing/reinstalling. Just what I do. edit: that compressor - just release the hose pressure to zero. Only have hose pressure when using the compressor... mine is same (and you can rebuild the relief valve - but it'll happen sooner or later again.

It was bad enough to see that the previous mechanic had returned the bike with such obvious problems associated with the carburation; but the slack way that the wiring loom plugged into the ECU was just pure lack of care or interest in providing a service for the client. Due to the mechanic's incompetence, the client has been put to great expense and inconvenience. If this was the work of a Yamaha main dealer then I hope the client takes it further to ensure that other clients are not paying for low skill spare parts surgery. I admired your no quit attitude to finding the cause of this problem and your fault finding skills are a treat to watch....and it always makes absolute sense. Keep up the good work Jim.👍

Emmisions manual will give you ohm values for each sensor really helps in trouble shooting ive found on new cars at least hope that might help in vmax case

As bikes get more complicated w / all their sensors & rider interface's, it gets all the more important that the mechanics get their arse to the schools but I doubt many do it & just because you went doesn't mean you can fix some of these intermittent problems. I see it in my industry as well(Heating-Air Conditioning) but I'm retired now..thank God ! These type of issues are getting worse w/ every new model year..... Now I consider the DRz 400 & I know you've got a whole different beast along w/ money tied up too. I'm sorry about that & I hate this type problem so much that it makes me look for older models to redo instead of buying the new crap! Hey, but that's me, I can't/Do Not want to work on them! You're one helluva man to fight it as long as you have. Much luck, peace

Just watched the 3rd episode , and the first thing I would look at , the dodgy ECU , is revealed right at the end . When faced with a pile of spaghetti, you can't reverse engineer the flavour of the sauce, you need to get the recipes. In this case , tell us , the subscribers all the funny business first , then myself and others with hundreds years experience in undoing other people's fuc-ups and bodgery. Have an informed platform to spraff on from .

Check the output triggering event on ignition coils, on ignition stroke and amplitude , on both banks, and swap coils and retest before replacing the ECU

Most likely, it's designed to fire the spark plugs twice every 360 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Once for the combustion cycle, and approx 180 degrees later for a complete burn during the exhaust stroke. It may be normal for the duration or even intensity of the spark to be different for each sequence? Pure speculation, but possibly relevant?

hey man what scan tool do you use for the bikes? I saw your video on the $3.30 KTM fix and was wondering what tool you were using bc I thought the wiring diagram it pulled up for it was so useful. I have a ducati instead of a KTM but I highly doubt it just wouldn't work on my bike after the digging I've done on the subject.

Own a 1997 vmax 1200 full power with only 9.000 miles been dry stored ,had carbs full rebuild, new fuel lines ,tank cleaned ran rough at low rpm firing on 3 poping on to 4 on test ride and opened up ran on 4 perfect then backfiring ,bit the bullet and sent it to bike shop came back worse 2nd bike shop still the same spent £1000 now and got to the point were i hate the bike, it runs 100% the same as your vmax firing on front on off on rear only difference with my vmax is its had (dont know what there called) the coils disconecred and coils fitted on ht lead if you know what i mean, on your vmax your going for timing being out ? ( waiting for next vid ) could my timing be out even that i know the millage is right and engine has never been worked on from new, this is my 2nd vmax 1st one was rough but ran great spent along time looking for a clean low miles vmax and it cost me alot been 2 years now due to just getting total pissed off with it not running right if its the timing great (wait to see how you get on ) if not its getting stolen and set on fire never had a bike to give me so much pain as this vmax,

I would never have paid for the original work that never fixed what it was left in for... never in all my life have I paid for a service I did not get.. if they don't fix, they don't get paid. As for proving they caused the issue. In the legal responsibility regardless of what you think, you will never prove it in court. All they have todo is deny all responsibility and show your videos of you tinkering with bike in a court. The law is not fair or just.
