Detroit Lions' fans have been flooding my mentions for weeks because of a tweet I posted three years ago about their current coach Dan Campbell. Don’t worry I’ll show you that tweet in a minute and explain.
But fuck it I’m bothered because there was a really big point that some Lions fans. And the non-lions fans who just wanted to be in the mix so obviously missed.
Some backstory: I’m from Detroit. Born and raised. Not suburban Detroit, but Detroit Detroit.
I’m a fan of every Detroit team except … the Detroit Lions. Listen, if you ask my husband … a diehard Detroit lions fan who bleeds Honolulu blue .. This is by far my worst trait. Now I don’t root against the Lions… unless they’re playing my team … because I have so many friends and family members who are Lions fans. And just because they’re winning … it would feel disingenuous at this point for me to just jump on the Lions bandwagon. I ain’t been through the struggle with y’all so i don’t have a right to enjoy the success.
Feel me?

You missed the point of Brad Holmes being put in charge of the more important position. Sheila Ford also pushes for more women in football. She hired the BEST people for the jobs. Brad Holmes being hired, and diversity being apart of the lions organization. Still doesn’t address the point of her argument. Black coaches don’t get the opportunity that MCDC received. Not being credentialed. Still get a head coaching job. Also how over 70% of OC’s and QB are white. There aren’t black offense minded head coaches. Black men only get hired for the defensive side of the ball.

Something that I think could be added onto this is the fact that the Lions hired a black General Manager in Brad Holmes, as well as the fact that Dan Campbell brought in several people to his coaching staff who were black too, one of which looks to potentially soon be a HC candidate of his own in Aaron Glenn. The Detroit Lions are absolutely giving opportunities for blacks on their staff, and how they've succeeded as a team shows just how effective they've been.

@michaelshan22 yes they are. But Jemele’s tweet was made immediately after his press conference when hired. Dan's first OC and DC were both black. The "playcalling opportunity that black coaches rarely get." What made Dan's intro speech so awesome was the fact that he was speaking directly to Detroit Lions fans and "inside the building." Fans of other teams didn't "get it" because they haven't endured the struggles of Lions fans. Dan understood the assignment. Bienemy doesn't understand Detroit like Dan.

@@michaelshan22 there’s no need to mention it since “we all know” this, and it played out after her tweet. It’s not necessary to mention in this context. Why? One crazy example of a black coach who was horribly mistreated happened right here with Jim Caldwell. When the Lions let go of him I couldn't help but scratch my head and wonder why?? He was an amazing coach who had the Lions winning!! He took a team that Jim Schwartz destroyed and brought them to 10-6 with a playoff berth in his very first year. Firing him was a huge mistake. I loved that guy, didn't understand it when he was fired and was whole heartedly disgusted when I found out how inept his successor Matt Patricia was as a head coach. You left out where Campbell was the assistant head coach behind Sean Payton for 4 years. Yes, he was the tight ends coach also, but he also had lead administrative responsibilities, which obviously lead to him getting the job with Detroit. As for EB not getting a head coaching job, the only guess is his interviews are either really bad, or he isnt behind the scenes seen as a "leader of men" like Campbell is. Other black coaches are getting opportunities, Bienemy not getting one year after year speaks volumes on him personally, not black coaches.

I think with regard to bienemy there was questions of who was really calling the plays at KC. A good coordinator does not necessarily make a good head coach. The technical stuff matters as much as the leader of men. It's an intangible that does not show up directly on the score sheet but is very important to team dynamics. Black coaches have to walk a fine line if they are not in organization where they were groomed into the position. Plus it's the relationship with ownership that affords some coaches more leeway.

The problem is that you did the exact same thing you’re fighting against. You judged a book by its cover. You made a snap judgment based solely on a press conference and then tweeted. Were you alone in your assessment? No. Was it profiling? Yes. What I agree with is the need to fight for more diversity in coaching and leadership hires. I’m just disappointed that a person fighting so hard to make that point fails to see the error of her own ways. You watched the press conference and concluded he’s a meathead, so he must be dumb and incapable because you looked at him through the lens of the typical hire: a traditionally trained, articulate coach who talks in refined cliches with the standard, coaching experience and background. Profiling right back at you. You judged a book by its cover. Looking more deeply at atypical hires (Campbell, Deion, etc) with an open mind is fighting the status quo. And that, as with minority representation, is really what’s worth fighting for.

Black coaches and "unconventional" coaches like Dan are two very different things. Judging someone for their philosophy, motivational tactics, etc is part of the coaching hire analysis, but judging people FOR THEIR SKIN is entirely different man. And yes, in this case Dan turned out to be deserving, but again, historically the same coach in a Black coach's body does not have anywhere near the same odds of getting hired.

I am a former GOP’er who now is a conservative/centrist democrat. What you have said is one of the reasons that I have grown as a black man! When are WE as black men gonna get the “gamble” hire like our counterparts. When are WE as black folks gonna get the job that “maybe” we shouldn’t have gotten on paper but someone just “felt” good about us!!! It is a pervasive mindset by the majority of America and not just in sports. Look around…in politics, business, government, basically the private AND public sector…if you’re black you must be “special” and over qualified to get the job. And it goes on and on…thank you for sticking to your guns!!!

Dan played at Detroit as a player and went 0-16 and had true insight into what kind of mess he was getting into. He wasl also an assistant HC for a few years with the Saints. You can argue your point for as long as you want but it was still a tweet that you shouldn’t have made. And I will agree that there is definitely an issue with the NFL and its hiring practices. Flores and Wilkes were both done wrong recently imo…..but that still doesn’t excuse your tweet. I’m also going to bet you NEVER apologize for anything.

As a Lions fan I get the reaction to the Campbell hiring. And yes, the Lions did skip over qualified black candidates. Leaning on the Lions for racial bias seems to be an over-reaction though. There are many teams who have NEVER hired a black head coach, but Lions are not among them, they have and it wasn't but a few years before they hired Dan. You of all people should have understood who Dan was talking to in the presser. He wasn't talking to any of you pundits and talking heads out there.

Lions hired Brad Holmes, who had no experience as GM, over several candidates with more experience. While it is possible that race played a part, never once have you entertained the thought that just maybe Dan was who fit the new image. Many of their hires have a connection to Michigan. He played for the Lions during the 0-16 season, so he knew the team and culture, and was known as a spark plug in the locker room. He was widely loved by the players around him. The Lions have tried traditional coaches, and look at where it has gotten them. I can at least have some respect for you for double downing on your animosity. I agree it is easier being a 49ers fan.

This is a little facetious. Brad Holmes was a scout for the LA Rams in some capacity for nearly two decades. By the end of his tenure there he had worked his way up to the director of college scouting working directly under Les Sneed. It was clear to anyone who followed the NFL that Brad Holmes was going to get an opportunity sooner or later. He was a finalist for the GM position with the Atlanta Falcons. He was the individual that scouted Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp, and Jared Goff. I love Dan Campbell but had the Lions not hired him he'd probably still be looking for a job today. The Lions were in a unique position and took a gamble and it paid off.

@ecalebw nobody "deserves". If by winning was the case, Bill Belichick should have been the first hire for a HC position. Eric Bienemy has something going on that in 5 hiring sessions, nobody has touched him. Nothing to do with his successes as a coordinator or coach, there is simply something else going on. Bienemy has interviewed at only Washington. He was the OC, and like you said, he turned around Sam Howell. But Raheem Morris interviewed with the Seahawks, Falcons, and Commanders. Aaron Glenn interviewed with the Chargers, Commanders, Titans, and the Falcons. Two other black coaches with less success than Bienemy got way more interviews. It tells me like I said before, it's something about Bienemy himself, and not him being black. Hell, the rumor is that they are waiting to announce Ben Johnson as the Commanders pick until the Lions lose or win it all. Bienemy has had way more success overall than Johnson, but they'd bring in a guy from the outside over their own? Something about him, nothing else.

This makes your tweet more baffling. DC used to play for the Lions. Is it possible the Lions ownership was like "we want a head coach with coaching experience AND ties to the Detroit Lions." That likely narrowed down the prospects quite a bit. With the Lions having a black GM, a black defensive coordinator, and recently having Jim Caldwell as a head coach, it's established that the Lions organization isn't racist. So the NFL is? But then you go on to cite the Patriots hiring Mayo. Buccaneers have Todd Bowles. Whatever you're being called on Twitter seems accurate.

Jemele, you nail so much of this…that it’s not about Dan Campbell himself, but the wrongs of the process and those who control it. Just a correction: You said Jeff Saturday was “the first head coach ever hired without college or NFL head coaching experience.” Vince Lombardi. Never had a college or pro head coaching job until the Packers hired him in 1959. Though the systemic racism Blacks have endured in America makes anti-Italian-ism pale in comparison at a macro and most micro levels, Lombardi endured having NFL and college teams refuse to hire him for years, because as he put it, “my name ends in a vowel.” If you could fast-forward a non-minority coach from the past to today who gets what you’re describing, it’s Lombardi.

Why, maybe because the same people tend not to see systemic racism in something so obvious (and many do not)!!! Intro: It's an honor to know that you are a Detroit, MI USA native and that you have come so far. I appreciated the areas you mentioned because I grew up not too far from them. In fact, the new Local Carpenters and Millrights Headquarters is on the old grounds of Tappen Elementary. Where I believed you mentioned Beaubien Middle School and Mumford High School. During my time at Wayne State Step Program summer job in 1994. I had a lady (I forgot her name) who was trying to recruit me to Mumford. Outside of there and circular recruitment to go to Cody High School. I ended up going to Murray-Wright because of the records transport. Which means Detroit Public Schools send your records to the neighboring school. Which for me meant Pelhman Magnet Middle School to Murray-Wright High School. Mind you I wasn't crazy about going there. A friend of mine was going to Cranbrook and that peaked my interest. Unfortunately I found out two things above all others. They were too expensive and I was "poe folk." It's great to have you and Mrs. Shaun Robinson to correspond with in that you both illuminate the potential and possibilities of what a Detroiter can do. So I thank you both for that.

I asked her why one day & she said she’d never had a friend w long blond hair she felt close enough to, one to say… let me feel it. While at her house w holidays coming up, she was mortified when her mom said she’d never had a white person in her house. I laughed… could tell my friend was upset. I let her know it’s fine. I told her mom not to apologize when my friend wanted her to. We were 19… then her mom asked if she could ask me questions, about white people. She ended up asking questions that made me realize that just a zip code away, people can live in completely different worlds. Some are afraid to branch out, some embrace it. She asked if we really ate canned foods for Thanksgiving. I laughed, said not at my house. Apparently that was a concept. She asked if served mac & chz. I said some people might but mentioned what cheesy type beans w crunched croutons we ate.. had seen at friend’s houses. She was shocked about a lot of my answers but I always quantified that in my area, what I was aware of. She then mentioned what she thought was typically eaten for black thanksgivings. By the time we left her. I’m wasn’t looking at me when she thought I wouldn’t notice. I knew then that maintaining groups, tribalism of culture or race is comfortable for some but hurtful in a way to society. I wasn’t brought up that any one religion or lack thereof or group of people was better than another. I did learn once working tho that the older black women/RNs were hazing me. It hurt at first as I worked at an inner city hospital & was 1 of 2 white people. There were times I wouldn’t be invited to order carry out lunches when they’d order… sort of made to feel like outsider. That made me sad but I stuck w it. The 49ers havent been good the whole time since the 80's, if she was a bandwagon, she would've jumped off as soon as they started losing, also I give her respect for not reveling in the Lions success, she wasn't there when they were losing, so she's not going to start pounding her chest that they're winning.@@mjc-ym9xt

Jemele, as a black man, I somewhat agree with you, but there's caveats: When black coaches or black GMs are hired, they tend to hire white cff coordinators and white head coaches -> Recent Examples: OC: Houston, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, etc. GMs Brad Holmes, Poles in Chicago, Carthan in Tennessee, etc. I'm willing to be Raheem, Jerod, and Antionio will do the same. We're contributing to our problem.

I tried to come into this with an open mind but it’s pretty disingenuous to say that the original tweet wasn’t a comment on his coaching ability. It pretty clearly meant you thought he wasn’t qualified. Don’t have to apologize but it would be worth it to examine what lead to misjudging Dan and taking steps to avoid that mistake in the future.

Think we are seeing a split in NFL coaching hires this cycle between first time HCs who are mostly OCs but have a family tie to the league vs. former players who are brought in because they are 'leaders of men' - will be interesting to see how this turns out

Why choose the Lions and Dan Campbell to make this point? Jim Caldwell was a black coach and a good coach, hired by the Lions. Also true fans of a team are fans despite the team winning or losing.
@lamontdurr1682
@lamontdurr1682 6 ай бұрын
Why use this example? Why not? It was the perfect example of how black coaches were being overlooked! Just because DC is actually a great coach now does not change any of the facts! And the Lions hiring Jim Caldwell does not change it either! Heck, one could even argue that Caldwell did not get the same opportunity to stay as other coaches. Remember Caldwell was let go when the Lions were 9-7.
