I first started using Linux back in the 90's. And around 1998, I went full-time on Linux because I could get Quake to run better under Linux than Windows. Eventually, with Windows XP,, I switched back because I was gaming more and more on my PC. Fast forward to 2024, and MS updated Windows 11 and enabled OneDrive synching without my permission. I was even using a local account, but I was signed with my Hotmail account in other areas for things I was using. Then, I read about CoPilot. Even though it wasn't going to be installed on my PC since it wasn't a CoPilot PC, I just know that eventually, MS would probably install it on non-CoPIloit PCs whose CPUs might be able to handle it. In any case, that was the final straw. I installed Arch linux (CachyOS at this time) and have been running full-time on Linux and in August, removed Windows completely from my PC and I only have Linux installed. I'm not going back to Windows from what I can tell. 3+ months on Linux, and I haven't looked back.

I started a few months ago, tinkering with linux. For the same reasons you did. Currently dual booting. What finally pushed me to make the switch, is they updated and installed copilot onto my pc (which is not even a copilot pc, and it's net even the right specs to upgrade to windows 11 (which I wouldn't anyway) So I dove in and have been more than happy. I haven't dumped windows completely yet, i have a few things im working on finding solutions for. But once that is complete, goodbye windows. The couple times I've launched windows since I switched. I instantly regret it. It's slower, and more bloated, and just honestly more of a hassle to deal with at this point. Linux is my home now. Now I just need to spread the good word.

I wish I tried Linux sooner. I only started in 2010 with Ubuntu 10.04. I stopped using it regularly a few years later because I couldn't get gaming to work well. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, I couldn't find a good Ubuntu based KDE distro. This led me to EndeavourOS with KDE Plasma just a year or two after they launched (at the time, their default DE was Xfce, but it has since switched over to Plasma). Yes, it was a bit rocky at first and with the 2022 Arch GRUB EFI bug, but I stuck with it, and because of Windows 11, I don't plan on ever returning to Windows.

@@iBolski as for me I've got everything I use on the daily working, not to mention i've been running firefox, blender, OBS, davinci resolve and others before i even thought about linux. So I have no issues there. And I've gotten almost every one of my games that I've installed out of the 450 or so games I have on steam working (disregarding anything with kernel level anticheats and such). With tweaking and occasionally a caveat or two. But it's been a blast, and the customization is fantastic. And I'm just on linux mint 22. I'm happy. The only things I'm trying to get working and will have to tinker with after the fact are, VoiceMod doesn't work, I tried it with wine and bottles, and it just won't play ball. And the other is occasional issues with steering wheel and pedal, force feedback, and I'll be converting from a logitech g29 setup to a more robust direct drive wheel. But that'll take a bit of doing. But, even with those issues, I'm much happier here.

So to run windows you will need to have the latest hardware and software companies can also insist that you have the latest windows. It could also put a stop to emulation of windows on Linux for the latest games, but this will not happen if people adopt Linux now. So there is a real battle on here !

Let me explain, I'm a Linux n00b and I've only installed Debian one time on an old backup desktop machine about 9 months ago, it's still running and it's as solid as a rock. Last week, I wanted to install some distro of Linux on a 14 year old ASUS gaming laptop with discrete nvidia hardware. The 9 hour long install was because I'm a n00b, and I never would have made it through to the end if that Copilot AI wasn't there to lead me by the nose through the install of an old nvidia graphics driver on a really old laptop. The install of Debian 12.7 is now done and everything is working on the old laptop. The irony of a Microsoft AI helping me to move to Linux was not lost on me.😁

Great video as always! I run linux in my 3d printing home lab for about 2 years now. FreeCAD and my slicers run great and i did not miss anything. With my gaming PC i was still at Win10. But after the announcement of Recall i switched to linux there aswell. I use cachy os and the gaming pc is more powerfull with the same hardware now. Some games dont run because of anti cheat tools and i will not play them because of that. Never looking back to Windows and the whole mess.

Whilst I would love to switch over to linux completely, sadly I can't. I need to rely on a lot of tools that are windows only and don't run using wine or proton emulation layers. Also, most of the games I play sadly require kernal level anticheats that aren't always supported on linux. I know I can use a windows vm or dual boot, but than I would lose performance and have to manage two instead of only one operating sxstems. But apart from that, my experience with linux luckily isn't holding me back since I run Debian on my server and use it for hosting docker containers of all sorts of applications. I also tried steamos and installing arch from scratch. Definitely enjoyable, but due to missing software support, I can't reach the same level of productivity as on Windows. Let's hope this changes in the future and developers start supporting Linux instead of just Windows (and sometimes MacOS).

I believe that winds are now finally changing. The Linux Desktop has caught up quite a lot in terms of polishing and many corporations (and governments) at least try to use it. This alone might be enough to accelerate software development

My next build (on a 10 year old x99 build currently) will be dual boot, working in IT support I need access to local Windoze apps that don't all function in VM's or have Linux alternatives. I've been putting off doing this mostly out of laziness, the recent push to scrape all my data and the fact it's getting harder and harder to disable features through group policy has encouraged me to start investigating Linux distros so I'm ready to go when I build a new PC in the coming months :-)

My big thing is that I still play games, and it was the last thing holding me back. Now that Proton exists, and could install a AAA with no troubles my need for windows is gone. Especially since If I need MS Office I can use the web version. All the crap that MS has pulled over the years, I am done with them.

I've been nearly two decades of Linux user and even back then I realized that I'd rather deal with technical issues than a system which by design is working against your own best interests. Back then these intentions were not that obvious to the end user, but the there were some hints already. These latest moves shouldn't leave any room for doubt anymore where things going soon whether you like it or not.

The name copilot suggests that we are still the pilot, but we as a user have no real control of our system. Only the power to switch to a system where we have that control, if we want it.

You're singing to choir here - we dumped MS Windows years ago, based on what MS Windows 10 was doing, did our distribution testing and settled on Linux Mint / Cinnamon. Sure, I've got the horsepower to run an AI instance, but zero urge to do so. Come the day my brain won't give me the answers I want, it's time to bury me.

@PremierPrep9 сағат бұрын
The only reason I've ever heard someone say they wouldn't switch to Linux is because their favorite app(s) isn't supported... but I've never heard a good reason why someone would actually WANT to stay on Windows. People generally just deal with Windows, instead of actually enjoying it like how Linux users enjoy their OS.

I know for my Linux Adventure of 7 years now. I've always appreciated KVMs like QEMU or qvm for QubesOS for Windows essentials if I really need it. Parsec I know is a good recommendation for game streaming on your network with that as well. Sometimes windows is necessary depending on circumstances but I would say rarely these days now since how far Linux has become.

My 2011 MacBook Air doesn't get any security updates from Apple, can't run much of the newer software because they won't let MacOS update to something modern on it and takes forever to load stuff on the version it does run, yet it is snappy and responsive on Linux and I can run the newest version of Firefox on the newest kernel with no issue. Because no one from Debian is making money if I trash my perfectly good computer, they have no incentive to place roadblocks in my way.

I first used Linux (Slackware) in 1994. Have run servers on it ever since, and always tinker with it on a second desktop, but for my daily driver my desktop has been Windows, because: gaming. Until May 2023. Win11 pushed me to use MS online services one too many times after taking an hour to apply updates. Near 18 mths later and I have encountered just 1 thing (Starfield Creation Kit) that I can't do that I'd like to. Here's hoping the Windows market share continues to drop.

The thing that gets me about AI is none of it actually useful. I was never not able to get answers to my questions from old forum or wikihow posts, I have always been able to search my own photos because I name the folders and there's a search feature in the file manager, and I like using my own brain to write and make art. None of this AI is washing my dishes or taking the trashcan out, it's just a shiny shiny sack of spy and trapware for big tech to make more sales from f00ls easily parted from their money.

Depends. Some LLMs are better search engines than something like Google in a lot of cases now. The tricky part is, to actually get them to display a link to the source.

If Linux doesn't have a DriverKit like every other OS, its not going to compete with Windows drivers. You need 3rd parties to be able to make drivers that are not open-source. They made the hardware and thus their drivers normally are better. This doesn't mean Open-Source drivers go away just as Open-Source drivers exist for Windows. But it gives both consumers and manufactures options.
