You were right the first time, if you were dumb. The only bravery comes on launch day, that's if launch day ever happens. This is definitely not a project for everyone. You better understand that a boat is going to flex in the water because the pressures of the water and weather. And a lot of times having a little knowledge can get you into a shit load of trouble.

I'm really happy to see that you're continuing with this project and I'm excited to follow your journey. I'm also really glad that you're as honest with your viewers as you are. As someone who has worked in the boating industry and has owned boats most of my life, I'm always trying to warn people about taking on huge projects like this. People always want to find that "fixer-upper" boat for really cheap but they rarely realize the amount of work and money project boats require. Especially since most people aren't doing all the work themselves. Thanks for sharing all your experiences, good and bad.

I did something similar years ago. I bought an old 1969 16 foot Cobia boat, thinking I was gonna slap a motor on it and get a trailer. I wound up having to remove the top deck, replace the floor, keel, stringers and transom. Then bought a used outboard not knowing the pistons were seized. I rebuilt everything and the boat ran like a champ. Thats why I am here watching you. Good luck with the project!

Tarp it until you can get the windows reinstalled, I like what you’re doing with the ity bity. Restoration is hard and you have a real hard restoration ahead of you. If you restore it properly then you will reap the benefits. I’ve done some restoration projects myself, just don’t give up. Top to bottom on the boat and it should be under tarps . No more rain

Update when you can. That's all we expect. Until the windows are done, you're looking at plastic tarps unless you can find someplace you can move it inside which is what I recommend. If it's inside you have a place to keep tools and the temperature. which will be important when it comes to doing fiberglass work. One thing I would very highly recommend is sealing all of your new wood framing, especially the framing around the windows, with a penetrating epoxy to prevent rot. Simply mix it, brush it on and let it cure. It will penetrate the wood fibers and form a waterproof barrier that is far tougher than paint or varnish. It isn't cheap, but unless you want to be doing this all again in a few years, it's worth it.

I have a 40 ft house boat and love it. I had side wall rot and had to invest in repairs. You got a great deal! Love the unique design. As far as power, i have a little 70hp outboard on mine. Definately not a raceboat but its enough. You could mount an outboard, use the rear area for your gas tank, batterys and storage. Dont underestimate how much storage you need. Plan ahead for lines, tools, lifejackets and gear so your living space Doesnt get cluttered.

I really like this series. I agree with what many have said already. reinforce that transom and repower it with a 200 or something. that will be more economical than trying to rebuild and put that thing in. Even a 150 would be lighter and simplify the install. The other thing is sprayfoam. Closed-cell spray foam will tighten that thing up. even the rotten boards will get sealed up from a good foam. Keep up the good work I have always wanted to do this. I didn't even know who you were until I stumbled on this series.
@gsh341
@gsh341 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that foam does a good job of making a boat more solid, but it's best to replace all the wood and seal it with a penetrating epoxy before using any foam. That will ensure that the boat stays solid.
@analysedean
@analysedean 2 жыл бұрын
Even a 90 outboard would push that at reasonable speed, and i fully agree, its easier to install, easier to maintain, and on an already short boat the old engine compartment would make great extra storage and a couple live wells.

You can reseal with a temporary silicone caulk just to get it enclosed, then cover the boat with plastic sheathing /tarps while you work on the interior. It’s a big project. Break it down into little steps. Use the down time to maybe do fiberglass research or looking at outboards etc. you’re doing fine so far. Make videos when you want to.

I feel your pain guy. Several years ago, I bought a 1975 Thomson wood haul with a 30 horsepower. Once I got it home and pushed into the shop, I begin taking pics and categorizing everything. Two weeks later I begun the doting task of striping it down to begin refurbishing the wood frame and ribs. Eventually it took me exactly 7 months to complete. However, three months later well on our way to the lake a drunk driver ran a red light and ended up broad siding the boat and completely devastated it. It was a total loss and thousands of dollars down the drain. Good Luck!!!

You have bigger balls than I do. It takes some massive clackers to tackle a project this intense. I started trying to turn an old Glastron Alpha sailboat into a micro skiff & pretty much gave up on it after gutting the hull. I realized that the the amount of work it would take to modify & repair it, I could almost build a micro skiff from scratch just as easy. At this point, I'm completely glued to your channel watching for updates on the houseboat project & it makes me want to not give up on mine. When those windows go back in you need to use urethane glue. Not silicone or caulk those both get weak and dry out over time. Urethane glue is what use to hold in windshields and a whole cars together now. We use black mamba brand at work to hold undermount sinks to stone countertops, it's stronger and seals better than using anchor bolts and silicone.

Keep them coming man. We have all taken on a project and got to that point where you think, “Shit! What have a done. My wife is never going to let me live this down.” I enjoy watching to be real, and work through it. To the top!

To be honest, I spent 25 years building an underground bunker all by myself and my biggest regret is not documenting all the work that I put in, now people that I have shown it to think that I just hired a company to build it. Keep documenting that boat and I'll be smiling with you when she hits the waves.

In the old days I knew a guy that did what your doing with an old PT boat. He gutted and rebuild it. All I have to say is the end result was incredible. I believe yours will be well worth it and incredible. I was doing the same thing with a duel engine jet boat, but I ran into a major problem, my ❤️ oh well. You keep it up, and it will be great, I'm sure of it, you have good help.

Done some RV renovations and know the pain that sometimes a project just starts feeling overwhelming. Personally i like video drops every 10-14 days. Provides adequate amount of content and we all know you can’t devote 100% of your time just doing this project. Have fun and take it easy. And if it’s easy take it twice 😉

That was one of my first thoughts. Clean all the crap out of the bottom and then temporarily put some plywood down to make working safer and just easier to move around.

No I'm still awake watching your video all the way from Hawaii. I've worked on a lot of projects and I feel the best way is to go all the way. The wood you replace you can beef it up make it stronger and it wouldn't hurt to seal the wood in copper green so you don't have to worry about bugs for awhile. If possible beef up that motor also you might want to go water skiing some day. Don't get overwhelmed it takes time and money working on a project but when you're done you can look back and say I've done a great job. I'll be here watching the whole time no matter how long it takes. I clicked on your first video and I was impressed. I gave it a thumbs up and I also subscribed.

Love these Itty Bitty updates! I'm no carpenter but would it best to start at the bottom of the boat for reframing and such then work on walls / windows? I would think you would want strong foundation to build upon. Do you know anyone with carpenter experience to give you guidance? Anyway, can't wait to see what the IB becomes :)

Also use pressure treated wood or aluminum instead of the wood.

I'm really, really enjoying this series, as I'm currently living on / renovating a 1975 holiday cruiser. I haven't had to tear everything out like you have but I had to get the boat clean dry and warm and replace or repair all of the onboard systems. So, big respect to you for what you are doing and your attitude. Your project is much more involved than mine and the best advice I can give is to plan plan plan, take your time and tackle one thing at a time..regards from the cold, dark and wet United Kingdom
