Yo Ayo, I’m a termite inspector for a living. The termites in your boat are subterranean termites. Meaning they live in the dirt. They only come up to eat the wood and go back in the soil after. By removing the boat from wherever it was being stored before you bought it, you effectively got rid of your termites. Just replace all the damaged wood and your good to go.

You should have closed off the windows with tarps before setting off those bug bombs. They work in killing things by being a persistent agent and displacing breathable air... LOVE the progress on the boat though!!

Those "weird scraggly lines" aren't mold, they're termite tunnels. I used to be a termite exterminator, and those tunnels are the number one thing to check for on foundation blocks and piers running up to the house

Having rebuilt old RV walls and a new teardrop camp trailer, I'd recommend the Kreg Jig pockethole maker to repair or replace wall supports. They look like 1x2s or close to it.
@jeremiahgentleman80972 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I came to say. Everything about the frame of this houseboat reminds me of the 1977 Layton Camper I rebuilt, and the Kreg Jig was my best friend throughout the process.

I ''finished'' rebuilding a Yukon Delta many years ago that had sunk and the marina I bought it from had flushed the 140hp Volvo Penta, rebuilt the stringers and floor. After several months finishing the project, when I finally made it on the water it just seemed magical like "Are we floating? and wow the engine is moving this thing, AMAZING!" I can only imagine how It's going to feel when this wonderful project finally hits the water. You will be sooooo proud of yourself and rightfully so!

Don't move or float the hull until you've reframed the floor, sheeted it and framed the walls. During the last seconds of the video you can see the entire hull twisting, with the walls moving independently of the stringers. The framing is critical to the structural integrity of the whole boat, rebuilt it solid and have plenty of support under those walls. Awesome to see the thing getting cleaned, though. *Toldga* like two videos ago you'd feel a whole lot better moving forward with everything clean. Might as well sort out which wires you're going to keep and yank out the shoddy old wiring for the original appliances and lighting; most of it looks like pilfered lengths of regular house wiring anyway and it'll need replaced. I still think you should just rebuilt the transom with a good used outboard in mind. Much simpler to reinstall, and think of all the storage space(cough* filming gear stowage) you'll gain. Its a houseboat, you don't need to go 30 mph with it. If you want to go fast while out on the Itty Bitty, install a cool little tender that launches a jon boat with a 9.9 merc on it.

I couldn’t agree more. A little lesson (how to) on stringers and glassing them in would be the place to start. Ya know if anyone can do this it’s you AYO. Once you get on a roll with actual repairs it’ll take shape rather quickly. As you know you have some expenses upcoming but as the comment above says, please take care to do it well / solidly. Love this channel.

Saw that too and realized the entire "house" is free-floating from the "boat". This is a frame up restoration essentially.
@radianttakanuva83882 жыл бұрын
When you replace the wet bathroom, you won't necessarily have to cut a hole to fit a new one in the houseboat. There's multiple piece residential shower stalls that come in separate pieces that you can easily fit inside and assemble.

My first boat was a complete restoration project. 1978 Steury 16ft Tri hull that I had to completely rebuild the stringers and floor. First run was in Tampa bay. Hit what I think may have been a manatee and snapped the shaft on the 78 Chrysler outbound. Fixed that and used it for a few years as my training boat. Traded it in on a Chaparral in 2003. Still have that. Wish you all the best on this project and I will definitely follow along. Cheers brother!

Certified boat mechanic here. First thing you got to remember is that boat stands for Break Out Another Thousand. Not one boat I have ever worked on didn't coast the customer at least a $1000. That being said I think you should see if that engine runs. If it does sell it for whatever you think is fair along with the transom assembly and outdrive. You can pressure test the drive to see if that lower unit is cracked or not. You can get a pressure testing kit at your local boat supply store, maybe even at a well stocked bait shop. Shouldn't be more than $20. To get the engine running you might need a mechanic. It just needs to run a little bit. But that engine looks really good for it's age. Im betting it runs like a top. Good luck with this project. It is a lot of work but it will pay off in the end.

As far as the floor joists and stringers and also perhaps wall studs - might want to take a look at composite decking. I've used the material in basement remodels - impervious to water and strong. You can scissor them together - similar to a laminated beam - to add rigidity and strength. They make pure composite and also a hybrid composite (basically plastic with sawdust - heated and formed under intense pressure).
