A long-distance couple has an argument.
IT'S YOUR CALL is used with permission from Meryl Hathaway. Learn more at merylhathaway.com.
Ava and Peter are in a long-distance relationship and have every tech tool at their disposal to maintain their connection. They use Skype, send texts, FaceTime and even talk on the phone.
But over the course of one evening, a typical catch-up conversation escalates into bickering, and soon the couple must reckon with exactly what is keeping them together, and just what their future will be.
Writer Meryl Hathaway, who also plays Ava, and director Jacquie Phillips have crafted a perceptive comedy about communication, intimacy and just how difficult relationships can be, especially when both parties are still evolving in life, work and character.
The film's foundation rests on an excellent, relatable script, which drills down through the levels of communication between couples as Ava and Peter talk. It begins with the sharing of quotidian experiences and details in an attempt to connect and bond with one another: the asking after work, the sharing of anecdotes, even the inside long-running jokes. These seem easy enough for Ava and Peter, who have an easygoing banter and chemistry, even over screens.
But then it progresses into more deep-rooted needs and conflicts like sex, connection, intimacy and stability, and here Ava and Peter are on shakier ground. They want to meet their respective desires for connection in mutually exclusive ways, and once they realize the gap, it opens up a bigger, less bridgeable rift. In order to repair it, they need to be on the same page -- and that sadly may not be the case.
Actors Hathaway -- who appears in the critically acclaimed comedy THE GOOD PLACE -- and Tyler Labine ably navigate the progression from light-hearted comedy to heartfelt drama with great chemistry, making it easy to believe that this is a couple with a long-running history. The camerawork that captures them onscreen gets increasingly more intimate as their conversations become more open and vulnerable, until the final moments, which bring us up close and personal with their final heartbreaking revelations.
IT'S YOUR CALL is an intimate two-hander, which is arguably one of the most common narrative structures in short film. Yet when done with emotional honesty and a spirit of sincerity, it never fails to make a case that the most challenging journeys in human life are often the emotional ones. That's the case with this short relationship dramedy, which shows that even when armed with an arsenal of tech tools, it's never easy to communicate or hear life-changing truths, even when it's necessary.

@@juju.ukrainiangirl Mutual sacrifice is the only way a true marriage works, and that is because. Without it, it's doomed for failure because it becomes about what someone else can do for you and when they can't meet that standard, it falls apart. Love is sacrifice - putting the work into communicating, putting the work into showing affection, putting the work into making sure your partner feels desired, etc. I could go on and on, but at the end of the day, it all finds its way to love and the primary manifestation of that love is sacrifice.
@RobnDaHood

@@louisurbancic2206 You're totally right. There is always some level of sacrifice to make love work. Whether it's compromise on a living situation, like taking a longer commute, putting some plans on hold for the benefit of the other, missing out on something you've been looking forward to because they had a bad day and just need a shoulder to lean on. Obviously the sacrifice is a sliding scale but its about having trust that the other person isn't going to take advantage of your love and knowing they would or will do the same for you at your lowest.

Having spent most of my 20s in long distance relationships... I felt that . OUCH. Another reason I'd never do it again. When all you can do is TALK AND TALK AND TALK to the person you love, you drive each other INSANE. WHen you can't hold them, sleep with them, SHUT UP next to them and just BE, you're doomed. And SOMEONE Has to be willing to sacrifice and move. When you come to the conclusion you're both happy where you live, pulling the plug is the hardest thing you'll ever do. Neither wants to and just like the end, you end up exhausted, emotionally drained, falling asleep on call staring at each other wishing you were in bed together and everything was right :( Don't do long distance EVER unless you have both agreed on a DATE where it will END either way.

@@RDCFemmes My family is actually proof of this. Way back in the 70s, early 80s, at the introduction of the internet after it was opened up by the military, my parents both started learning it, my dad was a coder running some Muds alongside his IRL work, and that's where they met. He made the move from Texas up to Canada, and after an introduction to her folks, they wound up getting married not to soon after. They moved back south after the government of saskatchewan used the state market to kill the livelihoods of farmers by selling out to corporations like conagra who flooded the market with cheap produce at the peak sale periods, starving farmers of much needed money and causing everyone to lose land they, or their great grandparents, had put blood, sweat, and tears into. Couldn't sell over the border either, to america or any other country, because that was illegal at the time. You sold to the state market and the state market only. And if the state market of Canada didn't have a good price? Well, too bad. Farmers were arrested, families were torn apart, and my mother and father left while they still could having family down in Texas to become citizens with. Funny how a story goes from online dating to socio-economic political corruption, but hey, here we are.

alcohol had little/nothing to do with it, and they clearly have NOT "moved on with their lives". Technology is always a detail, but it sure as hell is about long distance relationships. If the distance is long enough, it involves cultures and loyalties, proximity to family and career, forcing people to make horrendous choices that no one should ever have to make, tearing them apart by the seams. Sometimes people, after they've made such a choice, try to pile up reasons to retroactively justify it to make them feel better about themselves. The longer the time your apart the harder it is to keep the momentum of the relationship going. In the age of social media and video calls it really makes it easier but that still can never take the place of physical contact. This short definitely showed a great representation of that fact.

This has nothing to do with long distance relationships, A) He clearly doesn't care about her, if he did he'd be happy with her to see her happy and would be interested in all the stuff she sends him even if they mean nothing to him and he doesn't even consider moving to be with her B) She's being over dramatic, you can't schedule feelings and if he couldn't look at the pictures just for that day she should give him a chance Yes long distance relationships are very hard esp when you are both living in two countries (not states) and need a visa to visit each other!

Most contemporary timeline movies today show people looking directly "ahead" (into the webcam) as if they are looking straight at the person for the whole conversation, which is unrealistic and silly, because they'd be looking into the webcam the entire time, which almost nobody ever does.

We got married 2.5 years ago so we live together now and it's great :) If you really love and respect each other, the distance doesn't matter. I don`t think it matters where you live, if you`re with the person you love then you are home. If people are truly in love then they`ll be willing to move to the ends of the Earth to be with each other. There are times in our lives when we need to put ourselves out to get what we want and this couple were not willing to do that, which means their love for each other was not unconditional.

One problem with ldr is the context... the girl kept sharing context to her guy hoping he'll read all of it so her stories are interesting to the both of them. With ldr, you don't get the same context anymore: you don't get to meet the people she's talking about. All you see is a name, maybe a face, and tons of little snips of stories. In this sense, the guy's reaction of jumping to conclusions, getting her stories and people messed up, is sensible. Going by this central situation, if all they talk about is their stories that need the context, no wonder quarreling is common. Girl feels guy isn't paying enough attention to what's going on in her life, while the guy feels the girl gives too much attention on her life. I think what they should do to avoid this chaotic and limited topics is to find an interest that they're both into, can interact with, and is always updating in both places (as opposed to one being released later than the other, or not at all). Some good examples would be a really long tv series and games
