I started out in public accounting at a small firm so I had to become a jack of all trades. I eventually got promoted to controller at that small firm and then went on to be controller for a midsize public accounting firm. Now I'm an assistant controller at a large community college and I feel like I'm fighting this urge to get back into public accounting. I don't want to lose my edge and I love how quickly we can climb up in public. Also, I know it sounds crazy but sometimes I feel like I miss the fast pace of it all. With that said, have you seen anyone successfully transition back into public accounting and still be able to achieve success in higher positions? I don't really want to go back to being a senior. I've been in a leadership role for so long and find most of my happiness comes from the big puzzles, problem solving, being the bridge between my technical folks and other departments that we rely on to complete tasks, decision making and being client/customer facing. What would be your advice for someone like me?

Sir this was the perfect video for me and provided encouragement. I just started in public audit and I was so worried about going too slow and found it odd how much my seniors emphasized how there were no time expectations if someone is new.

Thank you for this. I'm 2 months in my first public accounting/corporate job, and it has been a lot to absorb. Provides some encouragement.

Be patient and work hard to learn. I had a really tough first year but work got more enjoyable once I understood what I was doing. Best of luck

25 and considering quitting my job to start college for the first time. I like the idea of the stability and security of accounting and learning about business. I feel so far behind. Looking back I could have graduated already and been advancing my career. Is it worth starting now?

Hey Brian, great video. I have a request for a future video. How do you think AI will affect the accounting profession? Since we do so much manual computer work, what happens when the computer can do it all by itself? Obviously the goal is to become an advisor/consultant instead of doing repetitive tasks each day, but I feel like a lot of staff level accounting jobs could be wiped out in 10-15 years. I’m a CPA so I’m not really worried about myself, but for the industry as a whole. How is anyone new to the profession going to learn the necessary skills if computers are doing so much of the work?

I love this topic and thank you for the questions. I will make a video response but I will summarize my answer with a simple phrase I thought about recently. AI will not replace accountants/CPA's but it will empower them to do more with the tools at their disposal.

It probably wasn't a good fit and glad you found a new spot. As long as you are learning and developing that's all that matters. Congrats
