I have a Catalina sailboat with a swing keel. I love it, the time I accidentally ran up on a shoal, I winched the keel up, floated off and winched the keel back down. Wing keels are more stable, but a bear when grounded.

I once heard a line that seems appropriate for this “captain”…If the draft of your vessel exceeds the depth of the water then you are most assuredly aground.
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Good quote, but I had a job a few weeks ago that would've been an even better fit. Guy ran aground heading out a pass at night in a 36ft searay. Got him free and left him where the channel split N/S. He was heading north I was heading south. 4min later he calls me that his engines have some bad vibrations so can I come tow him back to dock. Sure. No problem. Send me the coordinates. He does and I see he's in a really shallow area. I get on scene and hit bottom before I can get to him. I say "you know you're aground right?" he responds he can't be he's only a bit outside the channel. My dude is 50 yards outside the channel in 1.5ft of water in a boat that probably draws 2.5ft+ No wonder he had vibrations in his props 🤦♂️🤣

I had a friend like that. He had a boat and kept grounding it. He said there is water there i should be able to go there. He parked it at a dock. A hurricane filled it up, it sank and he told some people if they could float it they could have it.
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Lmao 🤣 People like him are the ones that keep me busy! I love that philosophy!
@PatrickHoodDaniel7 ай бұрын
He could have hanked up his jib and sheeted both the jib and main tight with the main traveler to the port side and got a good 30 to 40 degree heel making it a lot easier to pull that fin keel out. His main was loose with the traveler starboard. The only problem is when you turn him, he would need to get on that sail trim fast and he doesn't look fast. Leaving them there at low tide would frankly be a perfect time for the cap to do some bottom cathartic cleaning. That is a condo sized boat. They will be just fine! Haha.

A question for the sailboat gorundings Captain... ever use another boat tied to the halyard from the msthead? I seem to recall this was a common practice when I was a young guy. Love watching your work. Thanks for sharing.
@CaptKenO11 ай бұрын
Thanks mate! Glad you're enjoying my content. I have not and never will pull from a halyard. The risk of damage is not worth it. Yes, on some sailboats it's a viable option (not this one though since it had a wing keel), but I'll never do it

As soon as someone uses the term “blow boaters”, it’s a tip that they are probably not seasoned boaters. Anyone that has done any amount of cruising will tell you, if you haven’t run aground, you aren’t doing much cruising. The problem with this boat, I could tell right away that it was a “wing keel”. As it was upright and still badly stuck. Capt Ken had them take down there main sail because it was causing the boat to heel some. That just digs the wing in deeper. I don’t like this design for this reason. There are better shoal draft options. I got my grounded 46 ft sailboat off several times by simply taking the halyard tail, extending it, and tying it to a towing bridle on my dingy. It takes just a few hp to heel, (lean) the boat over, lifting the keel off the bottom. The mate puts her in gear and off you go! Without a dingy you can tie weight on the boom end and let it outboard as far as you can. This my get you off too. With a wing keel, it just makes it worse. Capt Fred.

Another great job by Capt. Ken! 👍 Think it's time for those two BLOW BOATERS to find another hobby. Model Rail Roading or model RC boating are good hobbies for them to get involved with! Both can be as expensive as owning a boat but just as relaxing. 😉

I disagree with your first sentence as I know plenty of seasoned boaters and even some sailers who refer to them as blowboats. I hate dealing with wing keels with a passion because it seriously limits what we can do to get them free without undo risk

Love the vids! Two questions, do the sandbars shift down there, should that "Captain" have navigated the charts better to avoid the sandbars? Also being that you spend so much time on the water, what color lenses do you recommend for boating?
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Thanks pvp64! I count 3 questions 😜 I can't say I have a preference for lens color...blue is just what I have because I like the look better 🤷 The sandbars around here don't change a whole lot except for the passes, but even there they don't change that drastically unless we get a major hurricane. Both of these sandbars were well charted and easily visible from the boat, so really no excuse.

next time put a stern line on the mast. sailboats have to be towed at an angle so the keel isnt digging in.
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
That could be an option if they didn't have a wing keel. If you heel over a boat with a wing keel you have a high potential to snap off the wings, hence why I didn't do that

The H is a lovely thing but the diameter of the tube will only lock a figure of eight in far larger rope - it's all too smooth for a thinner line and is acing like a set of pulleys. I'd stick with the thinner line though, but put an appropriate bar cleat on the underside of the cross bar. Something the size of your mooring cleats would be perfect. (Underside so it doesn't get in the way). You 'could' just do the figure eights you were doing, and then add a couple of slipped half hitches around just one sticking out end of the tubes - but it's quite likely to get jammed regardless of the slips.
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input boguing! It's definitely too slippery for the size line we're using. I'll talk to my boss about this and see what he thinks of it

Why would I pull them straight ahead into shallower water? As for why I was so far away? Because I don't want to bury my props and engines in the bottom.
