I love that Jon is the one shown as being wise beyond his years in this chapter. Then he goes out to the world, joins the Night's Watch, and through various events ends of meeting Igrid, who tells him he knows nothing. This parallel is so great, and fits so well with Jon. When he was with the walls of Winterfell, he's very knowledgeable about his surroundings, his status, and believes he has an established sense of the world/rules/etc. Then he goes out into the world, and it eventually hits him that there is so much he was unaware of/unprepared for (such as the truth about the Night's Watch, the Wildings, the White walkers, etc.) He is always vigilant and observes everything that others fail to notice, yet he realizes is still has so much to learn.

Of course he's not smart about things he doesn't know anything about. But Stannis listens to him and he basically does what Jon tells him. Leave dreadfort alone and go for deepwood mott and so on. No one I know is a reader except me. I just started my 5th refresh read. Between looking for things I missed and keeping the show separate you have to. One read and you're in love but every sequential read you pick up on more that George has hidden in his words. Having you guys and the Green Hand has been wonderful! We think so much alike and sometimes you just stumble onto something important and need a person to talk about it with and you all gave me that and still do. My GOT family. Thank you. The fact that Ned missed the sybolism of the stag killing the wolf. If he had listened he would have stayed home. Cat, as always, did everything she could to screw everything up for her family and that's why I don't trust Sansa. She's just like her mother. After Lady is killed Ned gets a moment of clarity about the wolf pups and his children and realizes that they needed the wolves and he had made another mistake. The signs were there but he didn't see them. Upon finding the wolves it's made clear that Jon and Ghost already have their worg connection. He doesn't know it for along time but Ghost was there to take care of him. The same way Summer protects Bran and Nymeria to Arya. Jon just seems to need alot of guidance before he understands their connection. I think a lot of the answers are in the 1St book. People are stupid though and George takes advantage of that.😂
@alanpennie80135 жыл бұрын
Moon Godess Preston Jacobs (I think it was) made the point that Cat was very aware of the dire omen involved in the discovery of the dead she - wolf and that awareness explains much of her behaviour in the early chapters. This is something GRRM should probably have explained more clearly.

I think it’s interesting that Bran’s wolf has golden eyes, and Rickon’s had green. It’s clear in the books that we get a short glimpse at the fact that Rickon can see the future, he knows that his family’s (parents and Robb) not coming back after they leave for the South. Is it possible that Rickon also has green sight and could have just as easily had become the 3 eyed raven? But Bran was the one who responded to the raven because the was crippled? Rickon isn’t officially dead in the books, Davos is currently looking for him. just something to think about. Thanks!

This was very well done. I've started diligently rereading the books, highlighting important parts. You made an interesting observation regarding Jon's direwolf opening his eyes before the others. Gared was a deserter and deserved what he got. People never seem to get that Waymar Royce's story is meant to parallel Jon's. Because Will is the protagonist we are meant to see Waymar as this dumb arrogant highborn, just like how many of the smallfolk in the Night's Watch will see Jon in later chapters. And just like with Jon, Waymar is right. He actually is smarter and better than the commoners he's with. Every point Waymar makes is correct. He had to explain to Will's dumbass that if the Wall is melting it's highly unlikely a group of Freefolk froze to death. He had to explain to that craven Gared that the purpose of Rangers is to get intel for the Watch. They just hate him because of his high birth. If Waymar had the benefit of a wise dwarf telling him to be nice to the illiterates or they may kill him, he could have been the protagonist. And unlike the two "veterans" Waymar was the first Night's Watchman in 8000 years to fulfill his true purpose and defend the realms of men against the White Walkers. Waymar is one of a handful of characters in the series who actually is noble and kept his vows. When others ran and hid he stood against death. Waymar deserves respect.

crazy idea, but could Mance Rayder's original plan in joining wildling forces together be about plain domination and conquest (possibly of the lands of the Others, certainly of the North), and it was only in reaction to Mance doing this that the Others started appearing in larger numbers? We always assume that the Others must started coming south because of some nefarious plan, and have been moving South for years because Mance had been assembling the wildlings for years, but what if it was the other way around? The Others start coming down and "trimming the fringes" of the wildlings to push them away from their lands, because Mance was up to some shit up there, or trying to find a potentially dangerous horn, etc. Or else, Mance and the Others are in some kind of agreement that Mance will move all the wildlings south below the wall in a conquest of the North, while the Others get to keep the lands beyond the wall to themselves, as the original pact probably dictated. Bonus if Bloodraven somehow had his finger in it.

It's interesting that I'm reading the books "The mists of Avalon" right now and GRRM planned to write a book of Avalon when the idea came to write Brans chapter. Asoiaf is based also on the history , not legend of 12 centory England. Where there we're still druids aka Merlin who wore snakes around their wrists. And who remembered and past forward the knowledge of Atlantian priests&priestesses who wore golden snakes around their wrists aka targarians, valyrian magic, doom of valyria &Atlantis. In the Before Arthurian time Romans aka andals came to England and brought Christianity aka The 7 from a bigger continent to an island and started burning and cutting down wierwood, the old God's aka sacred trees in nature that pagans worshipped and their religion ousted the old God's except from the north where it lingered the longest. They also killed the children of the forest aka fairy people (decentants from fairies who wore leaves as crowns that looked like a golden crown and leaves at the same time) who were small and lived in harmony with nature until they were only seen by special people like greenseers aka people from old Avalon kingsblood who had the sight. But they were fewer and fewer until Avalon was completely gone into the mists and we'll the singers also vanished. And the first men are like the old English tribe people who before the Romans lived harmoniously with nature and the fairy people and had taken on their religion and also kept the old tree sights sacred as places where God's dwelled. These 2 stories have so much in common it's no wonder I'm in love with both of them. But Avalon is not a myth nor was Arthur a legend and Merlin a wizard.

“Born in death” is, to me, a way to say “bittersweet”, because nothing is more bitter than death and nothings more sweet than birth. George said it would be a bittersweet ending and also that the clues to the ending are in this first chapter so I think he could be referring to children born at the end of great tragedy and death.

Ned said “Winter is coming “ in this chapter, after he told Catelyn that Bran was old enough to see the Justice! Great stuff... 😘 love you 😍

That was Catelyn's chapter. Catelyn doesn't appear in Bran's first chapter. It's just the scene with the beheading and when they find the direwolf pups.
