***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Oh the rocks!!! The bane of our existence in the Ozarks! We moved out here last February, and after seeing how others were struggling with the rocks, I elected to do no dig/no till. Worked out beautifully for us...the garden was amazing, and we had a good use for all of our moving boxes.

If I could give this comment 10 likes, I would. I agree that no-till/no-dig/deep-compost bedding systems/raised beds are the way to go in many/most situations! Cardboard sheet mulching is so great. I wish you well in your gardening/growing endeavors!

I read somewhere that an old-timer said, "If you have livestock, sooner or later you're gonna have deadstock." We all try our best, but sometimes things just happen. We've lost a couple chickens to raccoons this year, too. We didn't leave the door open, but it turns out raccoons can make a small hole in the wire into a big hole real fast LOL. Checking the wire on the coop and mending any gaps is just part of my daily routine now. As you said, predators WILL figure out there's free food there, and they'll keep trying to get some. It's only natural.
@suzannefronzaglio2427
@suzannefronzaglio2427 2 жыл бұрын
I bet predators just go by nightly, seeing if they can get inside chicken coops/enclosures. The temptation has to be strong. I bet if a camera was set up to monitor all around a chicken coop/enclosure all night, that people would see multiple predators coming by, sniffing around, trying to find a way in.
@dogslobbergardens6606
@dogslobbergardens6606 2 жыл бұрын
@@suzannefronzaglio2427 I'm sure you're right! We've been talking about getting a trail cam or two just to see what's wandering around out there. I've also heard of motion-detectors that trigger a BRIGHT light to scare away predators, but I don't know how well that really works. My wife recently read about hanging rags soaked in ammonia outside around a coop or hutch to deter predators... I don't know how well that really works either. I think the ammonia would evaporate in a day or two and you'd have to keep re-soaking them. At the end of the day I think you just have to keep the fencing/coop strong and secure.

8 years ago we had 12 chickens. My mom was diagnosed with cancer and died 4 months later. The day my mom died, I had spent the day with her at hospice and I forgot to shut the coop door. I woke up to all 12 having been killed. That was a sucker punch right after losing my mom, but I definitely forgave myself because I knew I had my priorities right and was doing the best I could. We can't always do all we want to do. Thanks for sharing!

We lost 2 layers to a fox last year. I forgot to close the coop door at dark. A couple hours after dark I remembered but it was too late. We installed an Omlet battery operated automatic door on the coop and built a chicken run connected to the coop. If I forget to lock the run door (and I have) the chickens are still protected in the coop. The auto door is pricey ($200+) but worth every penny.

Guys I love channel I'm sorry for your loss. I have lost birds also and racoons are a real problem here in Texas what i have done is install automatic doors on my 3 coops. Another nice thing about the auto doors are not having to get outside at o dark thirty to open the doors.I put a solar charger for a deer feeder and a deer feeder battery on them I have them programed for time instead of light and just reset times as needed.keep up the great videos and God Bless Your family. From Texas remember folks Beans, bullets and band aids.

I forgot is always on my list. Yesterday, we knew there were heavy rains coming. We had been hearing about it for a few days. I had 5 tomato plants that were trellised but, needed a new row. I saw them yesterday morning, made a mental note that got stashed with all of the others. And, then it hit. Yes we had rain, but, we also had 20+ MPH winds for probably an hour or more. My plants are laying over. I haven't been able to get out there ,yet to check on them and fix them, because the storms continued though 3 this morning. It's my fault. I knew better! See something, fix it right then and move on.

Accidents happen. We are also moving from one property to another, and it is very hard to try to keep everyone safe at both places. We had a bobcat get in with our chickens and kill all but one of them. It was devastating, but we had to pick up and move forward. Just like you, we immediately moved the surviving hen to the place we live. Show yourself some grace. This is an extremely busy time of year and this year it feels more important than ever to provide our own food. May God bless and protect you and your families. May your gardens be fruitful, and your stock be safe and sound.

I've been string trellising my indeterminate tomatoes for years by just winding the twine around the single stem as the plant grows; no clips are necessary. Sometimes a second stem will appear (not a sucker) and I may choose to string that one on a separate string. Sorry you had to lose those chooks but with all those roosters around, those poor hens will soon be praying for another raccoon visit!

We've been using strips of cotton bedsheets the same way. I don't like the idea of spending money on plastic doo-dads for the garden, because I know darn well some of them will get scattered around and end up in the soil forever. If cotton or twine gets scattered it will just rot away.

We tilled up a new garden area in south central MO this year as well and have spent hours picking rocks (as well as shards of glass and pottery). A rock rake would have come in so handy. Between the long day at the parents', the poor night's sleep/ early morning alarm afterward, and the premature moving of the chickens - may you be able to find a couple of hours down time mid-day or a few hours extra for at least one night.

Wow, homesteading looks so exciting, rewarding and also so much work. I’d love to live like this. Right now it’s not a possibility so I’m making the most of my urban backyard garden. I’ve really enjoyed watching everything grow and documenting the growth in my videos. I Love to film the bunnies and birds in action. I’m learning so much from you and other KZbinrs. I hope we can learn more from each other! Happy growing!

Sorry you had to loose some chickens but like you said at least they were roosters. Thanks for the update on the gardens. My goodness I have never seen so many rocks. Glad you were reminded to use the rock rake you already had. Hope the rest of the gardening goes easier. Have a Blessed day.

I feel for you and all the rocks. When we first put in our garden there was so many rock. Driving in our T posts offered another challenge we would hit rocks and have to adjust where we put them. Goodluck. Love your process.

Like you said you never want to lose any animal like that. I'm thankful it was only 2 of them. Last year, a cousin lost 35 in 1 night either to raccoons or a weasel (sometimes weasels kill for "fun.")

So sorry that happened. It is never easy dealing with the loss of livestock. We just lost 10 of our laying hens to a neighbors dogs a few weeks back. It was an eye opener for us.

Oh My... You do not have to tell me how you know it was a racoon. Soooo sorry. Really like seeing the American Brest chickens in their new situation. Rocks, rocks and more rocks. You will be dealing with them for ever. The ground grows rocks over winter I'm quite sure LOL. Your area is looking good now and I'm guessing you have many plants ready to go in there so You will be fine. Looking forward to following this adventure with you.

Raccoon got four from our very first round of meat birds. I set a live trap baited with cat food. He came back the next night. I run a hot wire off my premier one charger around the tractors now. Don’t know if that is an option for your coop or not. Of course you have to remember to turn it on which I don’t always do.

Been there. Had purchased 2 month old chickens (10) in Sept. of last year and they began laying in Jan-Feb which was great. Went out one morning to find 6 of them out of caged area and dead (decapitated and not eaten). Found raccoons love to kill but didn't eat any. Really bummed. Started over 2 mos. ago with babies. Reenforced pen. So bummed but life happens.

Sorry for your loss ... I have forgotten to lock our chickens up more times than I can count and we've never had a negative outcome. Even when I knew we had raccoons around. Ever since we started having goats and sheep in our run I haven't even seen signs of raccoons. Bummer about the rocks in the garden. The soil looks a bit light too, I would definitely be amending it with some good compost. Wishing you luck on the garden regardless. Mine is all in and mulched. :)
Finally Planting Day, we just can't catch a break!
