Stoke under Hughes were statistically the least pressing team in the Prem. Under Lambert, they are the most pressing team in the Prem. It's not that the players went trying under Hughes, it's that Lambert has brought in a new play style that demands more hard work. Pressing is more physically taxing than sitting back. I never had any animosity towards Hodgson. He created that after he left saying, "The fans turned on me". He was never booed or jeered, he had the opportunity to change things. I think his entire problem was that he saw us as Fulham but with a big name, he never changed his playing style. Liverpool, we looked like we were cowering to Wolves and Blackpool in games, it was ridiculous. When Kenny came in he had an attitude of, "right, I know we can lift a trophy (which we did), but I'm also going to play fearless football with an average squad." That's all Liverpool fans wanted to see under Hodgson, he had the back spine of Reina, Carragher, Gerrard, what was he afraid of? That's why it was a crisis era.

Gerrard may well have it in him to make a good manger. I’m calling it. Not saying he will be Pep or Jose though. Sounds almost simplistic but that doesn’t make it less true.

Suspect is hatless! Just to be clear I don’t think Gerrard is as intelligent as Pep and Jose and therefore won’t be that level, but he can make a good manager I reckon, some of his personality traits are telling, he clearly has a lot of good qualities outside of the fact he was a good player.

We have to remember that the Carroll fee was explicitly linked to the fee Liverpool were getting from Chelsea for Torres. Also worth noting that this was all happening very late on with the transfer deadline looming; Liverpool were not expecting to lose Torres that January (Suarez was originally bought to play alongside Torres and might have been able to help Fernando regain lost form if he'd stayed).

No, but more of it was his fault than he's ever going to acknowledge. I was underwhelmed by his appointment, but at least had bought into the media story that he was a good guy. Turned out he wasn't even that (sucking up to Fergie, talking utter nonsense such as praising our display when we got thumped at Goodison Park and singling out players to take the blame that was rightfully his). A lot of people expressed surprise at how petulant and pathetic he was when he stepped down from England ("I don't even know why I'm here" at the press conference within an hour or so of defeat to Iceland), but it wasn't a shock to me. To this day Roy reportedly harbours a grudge about being badly treated whilst Liverpool manager. I wish when I screwed up at work I got paid millions to go away whilst my mates in the media did all they could to pretend that everyone else was responsible for my failure.

@chrispalmer7893Ай бұрын
Hodgson was never going to be the answer (particularly not if the problem was defenders just hoofing the ball; that's all Hodgson wanted his defenders to do with it). The biggest mess wasn't on the pitch, it was in the boardroom and no manager would have fixed that. I strongly suspect that the real appeal of Hodgson to Hicks and Gillette was that he was disposable. They were trying to sell the club and it was easier to do that if the new owners knew they could replace the manager with whoever they wanted without facing a fan backlash; it was a positive benefit that the fans weren't particularly keen on him.

He took us to our first silverware in 6 years and guided us from toward the bottom of the league to a top 10 finish with the likes of Christian Poulsen and Joe Cole.

I respect Gerrard but he's wrong for missing that pen and feeling the badge. Very strange.
