FINALLY!! Someone defends this movie!! Is it perfect?? No. Is it executed masterfully, nope, it often has conflicting tones. But a considerable portion of this movie is wonderful, quirky, touching. This movie is in it's own world, it is it's own atypical animal.

I loved this movie as a kid and I think everyone I knew were also fans of it. As far I was aware it wasn't looked down upon. Being based in the UK we had grown up watching Rik Mayall on TV. This film was just another opportunity for us to see Rik being his usual wacky over the top self. It wasn't until the early days of KZbin that I discovered that the movie was pretty much despised by US critics and audiences.

To say Rik was a legend over here is almost an understatement; so beloved was he, among both children and adults alike, that he was the face of Nintendo UK for a while in a series of adverts they produced in the early 90s. If you've not seen them during your research, it's well worth doing so; much as I'm a Sega boy at heart, even I can't deny Rik's Nintendo adverts are hilarious. For my money, his appearances and work on the long running Comic Strip Presents series is some of his finest work, alongside The Young Ones and Bottom. In fact, if you're looking for good British comedy (that isn't Monty Python), getting stuck into the Comic Strip Presents lineage is an absolute must.

The message behind Drop Dead Fred saved my life. I'm autistic. For all of my life before watching Drop Dead Fred I was taught how to hate myself. I was told I was less than nothing. The ending where the lady learns to love herself taught me how to love myself by paying no mind to others who said I should hate myself. I owe this movie a lot. Drop Dead Fred was among the biggest blessings in my life. I did not grow up until the first time I watched the beautiful soulful ending of Drop Dead Fred. The fact Dead Dead Fred was hated by typical humans and movie critics is par for the course in my life. Drop Dead Fred will always be among my life's single greatest blessings. While watching this, I was thinking all of the "Bad" parts don't sound that bad at all. I actually prefer it when movies just let the story and characters be without having to explain every detail of the metaphysics of the universe within the movie. And I also enjoy movies that have a mix of adult and child themes. It's naive to think that the two are not related.

In the U.K. it was rated "15" (which they don't make very many of these days - 12A ratings sell more cinema tickets) so it's not technically a kids movie movie, but for teens and adults. Or for adults to irresponsibly show their kids. (Thanks mum). Rik was funny as F**k in Everything.

I watched this movie in elementary school. I rewatched it today and it legitimately made me cry and I'm 21 now. The story is touching and Lizzy as a little girl being told awful things like "I don't think I love you as much as I used to" made me well up in tears. I baby sat my nephew from the time he was about 5 until 11 when I left to join the military. He grew up in some really terrible circumstances with two parents who don't know how to care for children because their parents didn't either. I saw what stuff like this does to a child. Those words hurt a kid terribly and it honestly broke my heart. This movie means a lot. Lizzy wasn't physically abused. She was starved of affection and kind words. That's more common than we realize and it has a huge impact on children's well being and who they grow up to become. We have to be careful and nurturing to them.

I loved this movie as a child because Drop Dead Fred's humor appealed to me. I thought it was all hilarious, because as an 'imaginary friend' Fred was meant to be fun and funny to children. His humor is silly and ridiculous, which was all that I wanted from a movie. I saw it again as an adult. An adult who had gone through a lot of the same hardships as Lizzy. An abusive parent, leading to abusive relationships, combined with being ill suited for my job and miserable... and I found myself loving the movie even more. Partially because I saw it as a child? Probably. Remembering how funny I thought everything was always cheered me up. But the story was easier for me to understand, and I understood how Lizzy felt in a way I hadn't as a child. Fred's struggles to be friends with and connect to adult Lizzy in all the harshness of her adult life (despite being literally made for a child) was what made me love the movie now. He helped her break out of a vicious cycle of abuse she was letting herself spiral into.

I think this movie was made for a certain audience, yes, with Mayall's slapstick popped in for the kiddies. It's pg-13 for a reason! 😅 I have the feeling that people who 'hate' this movie, related a little too well to the 'villains' - y'dig? It's hard to watch yourself be lampooned on screen, and then ultimately defeated with a resounding "I'M NOT AFRAID OF YOU". 🙎 Oddly enough, my mother was incredibly abusive, though she'd tell you otherwise, if she had a mind anymore. But she would always take me to see these movies with this cold abusive mother, and a child breaking free. She loved Tangled. 🤷♀️ I think, personally, she wanted to break free from herself, but couldn't. And we kids bore the burnt of her anger over her own mental illness. Her own trapped child, I suppose, under masking tape forever. I have heard that she's a nice old lady with Alzheimer's now. She gets to have all the meanness stripped away by a brain disease, and I get to live with the memories of it.

Has anyone ever thought about Fred and the little girl at the end? I always thought Fred might not stay with her for long since Lizzie came into her and her dad's life. I am thinking the little girl's mother was also emotionally abusive since the father got to have full custody of her. If Lizzie dates or marries her father, the little girl is going to become happy because she finally have someone in her life who understands her and is not emotionally abusive, and hence she wouldn't Fred need anymore.
@princesslulu57956 жыл бұрын
ChicagoGirl I first saw this movie when I was probably about 5 years old, but I never thought about that. It wasn't until I was older I really understood a lot of the underlying psychological issues and abuse that this movie touches on. In the US mothers overwhelmingly tend to be favored in custody fights, so the fact Mickey got full or primary custody of Natalie, assuming that norm exists in this films world, that Natalie's mother either didn't want her or was abusing her. Another reason I am inclined to agree with you is that at this age kids don't usually act out this much and to this scale unless they have some particular issue. The most common reasons are bad parenting and/or an abusive home. Like Lizzie as a kid, Natalie's behavior may have been the only way she can express her pain from whatever's going on with her mother and the stress of what is implied to be a nasty divorce and custody battle. It also could be a psychological thing as it's also plausible for children with mental illness to exhibit these behaviors which has also been theorized with Elizabeth
@comicbookreviewer48562 жыл бұрын
Looking back with Lizzie's mom i can't call her a full-on bad guy it was clear she thought what she was doing was right and with Fred coming into the picture made her feel she wanted to take the matter in her own hands and got fed up with her Husband for not doing anything about it as a parent wants to do the right thing but can sometimes make things bad
@chicagogirl99712 жыл бұрын
@@comicbookreviewer4856 I'm sorry but telling your daughter you don't love her as much as you used to, only had her to save a marriage, and blame her for her husband leaving them is evil. To be honest I think she was jealous of Drop Dead Fred and her husband because her daughter had a bond with them. I feel sympathy for her at the end when she says she'll be lonely but she put herself in that situation. Like Elizabeth said she needs to get herself a friend. My opinion in order to make a friend she needs to change her personality and be vulnerable instead of a hard shell.

What I mean is, I'm British, and I grew up watching Rick Mayall in the Young Ones and Bottom with my family. He is amazing. But perhaps that's why I like this film so much? I already knew what to expect with Mayall's comedy. Also, your explanation of the psychological elements is so spot on. It's so sweet to see Elizabeth becoming more self-confident over time. It's genuinely glorious to see this. I've been a fan of your stuff for a while but this chimed so much with me I had to comment - I feel exactly the same way about the film despite not having seen it as a kid. What I did see all the time growing up was Rik. Cavorting about and being a full-on lunatic at all times. Phenomenally funny, gloriously unique. He died very suddenly in 2014 and the grief across the UK was palpable - the outpouring of affection for him was enormous and it was stunning to suddenly see just how many people cherished him as much as I did. So the most heartbreaking part of this video for me is your shock and joy at 'uncovering' how respected he was in the UK and how strange that feeling must be to realize that across the sea there were millions who loved him as much as you did. Keep up the good work Brandon, eh? Pinky promise!

The film is released on Blu-ray in the UK. It has a scene where Lizzie and Fred enter the world of imaginary friends, which looks like an office. There are also interviews with the director, producer and writers. It was a British co-production, hence the casting of Rik and the actor who played the father. On the interviews, they explain that the movie was originally going to be set in the UK, but Rik wanted to do an American movie. Rik also helped with the script. The opening scene where Lizzie's mum reads her a bedtime story and the scene where Fred sinks the house boat was his idea. The movie didn't bomb in the US, it just did okay.

This was really good! This combined 2 types of things I've been wanting to see for a while in internet review videos. 1 is articulately defending movies a lot of people think are bad because sometimes there's just too many "hot takes" about why XYZ film TOTALLY FUCKING FAILS that someone liking it is really novel. 2 is comparing what a piece of media tries to do with similar things that arguably do it better. I really like that you did that here because I think it's way more constructive than again the "THIS MOVIE TOTALLY FAILS RAAAAAAAGE" type of movie reviews that I feel are way too prominent. It's nice to see such a positive force of entertainment here. More of this series, please!

I'm glad you noticed that, because this series is pretty much my reaction to all the dumb, complaining reviews that a lot of online critics make. It's tiresome.

This channel has became my favorite for the last couple of weeks. Too many (good and bad) cinema related channels are focused on analysing the flaws on movies. It's truly refreshing to watch content where the creator talks about something they like.

I first saw this as a 15 year old just because I was such a huge fan of Rik and I really hated it. But watching it now as a 47 year old, it great and has a lot of depth that I previously missed.

I think the thing I and my dad loved the most about drop dead fred is that it was so goofy but made us cry and it was heartfelt. I love the mix if it.

I love Rik Mayall’s work so much but the end of this film really has me shed a tear in this day and age, a tear for the loss of such an incredible British comedian/comedy actor and a tear for the actual scene where he leaves her in the end, just such a lovely ending in which I admire more now than I ever have as an adult I never realised how deep it was as a kid. But I must say that this film was my top go-to movie back as a child! Some of the films that were out back then were hilariously bad, very weird, nonsensical, but original… I had the Drop Dead Fred film on VHS! Along with others of my personal favourites that I have to name: Mr. Nanny (with hulk hogan 1993), Ernest Goes to School, Dentist, Africa etc… Dennis The Menace (the original one), The Mask, Kindergarten Cop, Junior (both were Arnie films), Encino Man, George of the Jungle (both Brendan Fraser), Jumanji, Jack, Toys ( which had Robin Williams in those three films), Toy Soldiers oh and Matilda… A classic! They were all my go-to’s as a kid. Man… The 1980’s and 1990’s films were so much more interesting! Even if a few or so were a little on the lower side of movie budgets and/or some of them being kind of outdated, but hey, they were worth the watch to me. 😂😂 My childhood was watching films on my video player! Glad to be born when I was. 🥲 It was a magical and wild time to be a kid that’s for sure!

Keep this up man! I was originally hesitant about you branching out on the channel but I love this concept. My movie tastes are very eclectic so there are tons of movies that I think of as gems that other people either haven't seen at all or hate or don't ever plan to watch. If a person's first introduction to an obscure movie is a negative review then of course when they watch the movie for themselves they're going to hate it. We need more people spotlighting obscure movies or talking about the positives in bad ones, or at least ones most people consider bad. I can't wait for more!

34 minutes reviewing drop dead Fred... you're my hero. Great idea for a series... see also... Captain Ron (1992 -24%), King Ralph (1991 - 20%), Greedy (1994 - 29%), Next (2007 - 28%)

Oh, and another weird "package deal" that Drop Dead Fred was sold in : In an old blockbuster video promo they advertized the "T-15 prepack". 12 Terminator 2 tapes + 3 Drop dead Fred tapes + a sweatshirt, a hat and sunglasses. A true once-in-a-lifetime deal :D .... I guess that was the only way, they could make retailers put the Drop Dead Fred tapes on the shelves - because they gave away free shirts, hats and sunglasses along with it! ;D (of course only beaten by the "T-20 pack", which contained 16x T2 + 4x D.D.F. :D :D). The promo video is on youtube: watch?v=pA7gvhwC9RI

When I was a confused, lonely, autistic, ADHD-ridden kid, I loved this movie to pieces. It was wacky, all over the place, and I loved Fred. I wished someone would play with me like he played. I wanted to go on adventures and make mud pies and pull pranks. I was afraid of growing up. And then I did, and I watched it again. And I didn't love it any less. If anything, I understood it even more, because now I understood Lizzie's adult struggles and could laugh at all the adult jokes. I think that's the best way I possibly could have done it. Watching it as a child, and coming back to it as an adult. I can feel all the enjoyment I got from it as a child, but now I feel the heartache and pain of all the adult characters. It's still near and dear to my heart, and it always will be. RIP Rik Mayall.

Great job! Drop Dead Fred is one of my childhood favourites and it was awesome to see it broken down like this. It'll be interesting to see what other films will be classed as 'it wasn't THAT bad'. I hope to see more classics that I've grown up with.

So I remember watching this movie as a kid. Like you, as a kid, I didn't really get the psychological themes in the movie. I don't think I really even understood the premise. I think I probably watched it too many times in a short period of time and developed an aversion to it. I haven't seen it again in more than 20 years but your video makes me want to check it out again.

My first exposure to this movie was the Nostalgia Critic review. It's funny cause I remember actually liking a lot of the clips that he showed. I'm a big Rik Mayall fan, so that probably had something to do with it. I didn't understand all the rage against Drop Dead Fred at all. I love how you focused on the abuse issues that this movie tackles. It's not a perfect film, but there's a lot of heart and talent in it. I feel like there are too many people who get hung up on the ludicrousness of the slapstick humor, that they refuse to acknowledge what the movie does right. Great work!!

After watching your "The Future of "No Small Parts"" video I had to come back and watch this one one last time. Easily my favourite video of yours and probably favourite "video essay" of all time. Rik Mayall was my hero, and has had the biggest impact on my life- it was heartbreaking when he passed away. Thank you Brandon. Your last point, the one being about re-watching movies from your childhood is absolutely spot on, and is one of my main arguments to why the Star Wars prequel trilogy "Wasn't That Bad".

Imaginary Friend (2012) is the best Lifetime movie ever and I watch a LOT of Lifetime holiday movies. The first half hour has a lot of scenes that mirror Drop Dead Fred and then it changes things up. They understood the assignment.

Brilliant! A childhood favorite that opened the door for me to not just ALL of Rik's work but other British comedy as well. From Bottom to the Young Ones he was comedic genius. His passing was incredibly sad. I'm pretty sure you filmed the end credits naked. Another FANTASTIC No Small Parts.
