Shayna Jack has worn the label of "drug cheat" since she tested positive for a banned substance in 2019. Subscribe: bit.ly/3l7kXcR
The 22-year-old swimmer maintains she did not knowingly take the drug and is fighting to clear her name and get back in the pool.
Jack had her sights on the Olympic Games, but a positive tested meant she was banned from competition for two years.
As an appeal looms to increase her ban, she’s found herself at the centre of a much larger debate about world anti-doping rules that some say are railroading athletes.

Its tough to take a side on because you want to be fair but you don't want to be duped by sophisticated cheaters .Maybe instead of having a strict 0% policy they can change the parameters for certain drugs to insure that the dose was way below any effectiveness level and was not administered over a prolonged period of time . Also change the sentencing guidelines so people who could have been victims of contamination don't face the same consequences as people who are most likely certain cheaters

What types of foods & supplements other athletes in her team used to eat or drink????. Especially any supplements taken by athletes must be proven by Australian swiming authorities before any Aussie athletes taken them and Aussie athlets must use those supplements proved by Authorities only. Athlets foods & supplements must be supervised while they are actually eating & drinking. Having said that in this presentation show it has also been said that even Shayna's hair been tested which proved she is not a cheat. I think lots of people are involved in this case. I wish all Aussie athlets best of luck.

On 13th august 2020 I was home and ASADA turned up. They said there is a dopping investigation going on. Someone tried to bring drugs into the country using my identity. It was the worst day of my entire life even today I still am having extremely suicidal thoughts. ASADA did not care about my mental health it was awful there was no mental health support at all. This went on for months. ASADA treated me with no respect I just don’t understand why or how ASADA could be so nasty towards me for a crime that I did not commit. Someone out there has stolen my identity and committed a crime using my identity I get treated like a criminal and what happens to them?? Absolutely nothing!! Actually she's not wrong Australia has one of the tightest and most encompassing testing systems in the world. Every Australian Swimmer whos gone overseas since about 1986 was tested immediately after the trials. I know that for a fact because I was a swimmer back then. I know for a fact the Brits and Yanks started similar programs at that time as well. I had a scholarship to an American University and was there when they started that program. I know how that all worked because I got tested several times. So by the time of Barcelona (1992) EVERY Australian, British, American and anybody studying in America was thoroughly tested and that hasn't stopped to this day. These days as far as I know most countries test their athletes before they go overseas to avoid "mishaps." The problem is athletes don't always think about what they eat. They're mainly focused on training and getting through trials. *BUT* they are constantly warned that the testing is getting better and better and that there are foods that can trigger the tests. They have to be really careful with chicken and beef because a lot of livestock are fed steroids to grow faster. Places like McDonalds and similar should be no go for serious athletes who expect to be tested. What she should be slammed for is NOT LISTENING to the sports doctors and dieticians. They all know what's safe and what's not - its their job to know.

quite a biased piece. she had a banned substance in her system and that's that. just because she's pretty or because people around her dont believe she would cheat, doesnt mean anything. the result in the lab does mean something. maybe she just tried to get over the hump, maybe she doesnt consider it cheating cause it was just a little and everyone is doing something. maybe she did not ingest it on purpose, in which case she should have paid better attention to what she ingests. we dont want athletes, bc of their nature as role models as well as because of peer pressure, to do PEDs. There is a control system in place, that is quite inefficient in many ways, to check on the athletes. There is no human right to being a pro athlete. she can swim in her free time whenever she wants. maybe blessing in disguise, or she'll be on another episode of pro athletes getting depressed after their career. she can work on her future after pro sports now.
@joshuanorton8084
@joshuanorton8084 2 жыл бұрын
I think you're mistaken. The whole point of an anti-doping organisation is to stop intentional intake of chemicals that can cause an imbalance in fair play. Which is the exact opposite of what happened to Shayna. You cannot simply say that she can "work on her future after pro sports" this is her future. You can't remove someone from what they've worked on their whole life and then tell them to work on their future. They will have to start all over again. Not just that, but it is impossible for someone to keep track of everything they ingest. Chemicals in the air can change as you travel. You will not be able to keep specific chemicals out of your body all your life. As was mentioned, contamination is incredibly common, and the technology was able to pick up such a miniscule amount that the chemical had essentially no effect on her. You do not seem to understand the devastating effects of depression and how horrible mistreatment from other people is. Plus, with proof that she hadn't taken any chemicals previously and the fact that not even Shayna herself could find the cause of the substance increase should tell you how miniscule the amount is and how difficult it can be to avoid ingestion of different substances. Without the understanding of her point of view, you can't say she is the problem. 2 years is already ridiculous for miniscule, unintentional intake of substances. This may be part of the problem for Australia's drop in sport participation.

I feel sorry for her because something like this will be very hard to recover from. I don’t think it was intentional at all and unfortunately there’s no definitive way of proving that. But I also think there’s a very real reason why the anti doping laws are sooo extreme and it’s because of all the athletes who have come before Shayna and have gotten away with cheating, some for years. You can’t claim to be the best in the world and also pump yourself full of steroids. I hope she finds some closure and I hope other athletes out there hear this story because pretty much every athlete should be worried.

I gotta say as a medical scientist, yes it is now incredibly easy with technology to detect minute amounts that can be absorbed through skin etc. I am amazed to be honest that the anti doping system has not already allowed for this/ factored it in. Particularly where it is such a tiny amount to not affect performance, no history of use, hair samples showing no ongoing use etc. Contamination of supplements is also extremely common. If that chemical is commonly used in gyms, then it would be very easy to be the next person onto a piece of equipment and it absorbs through your pores (which are open with sweating). Having also some experience with China (and the saving face mentality and men not tolerating a woman's rights, let alone western women), they took the Sun Yang thing very badly, as a big insult. I honestly would not rule out a set up eg powder being placed on shared exercise equipment, could easily be done. Countries like Russia and China sadly have a long history of such behaviour.

Viewing the program on Shayna Jack last night I observed several instances where contamination of the urine sample could have occurred. 1. The collection container held by the "collection official" as Shayna squatted on the toilet bowl. Do we know without doubt it was clean and sterile? It would appear this container was used to decant urine into each of the sample containers marked " A " & "B" in a non-sterile environment ie a public toilet

The athlete selects their own collection kit at random from a number of sample collection kits presented to them, which are completely sterile and sealed (like sterile surgical equipment). The athlete themselves has to verify there’s no sign of damage/tampering to the kit before they can use it, obviously to prevent either accidental or deliberate contamination. The athlete also splits their sample into the A/B containers themselves, which are also sealed, and chosen/inspected by the athlete at random. For any contamination to have occurred there, then every single kit would have had to be carefully rigged and then expertly re-sealed. The sample containers are sealed by the athletes themselves also, then the athlete fills in paperwork to verify all the above. In the lab samples are transferred from the sealed containers in an aseptic lab environment by a sterile pipette (as it’s a biohazard, minimises risk of transferring potential illness). The trouble a lab would have to go to deliberately tamper with samples isn’t small, but to frame one single athlete would be utterly pointless. It’s also far less likely post-Russia, given how colossal that scandal was (and how involved their lab operations were). If it was some big conspiracy then it would’ve been blown wide open by now. I’m not saying it’s impossible her sample was contaminated after she gave it, but it’s unlikely. It’s more likely it entered her system before she gave the sample, however that may have been.

Shayna's case is truly scary, especially in view of the fact that she'll never know how the Ligandrol got in her system. If the threat of contamination is so pervasive, so as to even be present in one scoop of a supplement but not in the next, or for that matter, on a surface with which an athlete can come into contact with and not even be able to forsee, perhaps technology should also be able to assist in proving whether that chemical intake was intentional or accidental. Otherwise, anyone with a competing agenda could, conceivably, plot to derail a whole national team with an act of chemical attack that is so subtle and yet so deterministic, that any preventative measure to combat that possibility, regardless of how improbable it is, that it would have to literally rival that which is normally required for military purposes.

Shouldn't there be a modification on the rules where the positive test has to reach a certain percentage in order to be deemed as an intentional ingestion? (ie. Let's say 0.50 µg is the amount that a substance will cause noticeable impacts on the athlete). Athletes can follow all necessary precautions, but they can't prevent cross contamination in pre-packaged products that are well integrated into their routine. If something like this was integrated into the rules, then a lot of athletes that accidentally ingested negligible amounts of banned substances would have avoided being called drug cheats

This scares me for when I get my random drug testing. This could really happen to anyone. It should be innocent until proven guilty when you are talking about taking away someone's career, passion and joy for years. God Bless Shayna. I pray the hearing goes in her favor and she can return to her sport and be on that Olympic podium someday with a gold medal around her neck.

That supplement that she took is quite expensive and experimental .. therefore its traces would never have been found in common supplements due to any cross contamination ... !!! She is just playing to the public and hoping that because she is blonde, people would be sympathetic to her plight ... you cannot have one rule for swimmer like Sun Yang and yet let our swimmers get off free ...

Nothing wrong with taking a supplement if its clean! Not sure what ur on about, and she didn't take the drug knowing. Clearly you didn't watch because even the scientist proved it was such a low dosage it didn't even effect her body. Her hair sample proved no long term taking. She knew the testers would be at the trials so why would u start taking a drug days before a known "surprise" test. As an ex swimmer. You knew which trials and races had the testers its not a secret. Not everyone thats supportive of shayna Jack is calling Sun Yang a cheat, your just jumping to conclusions.... The difference thou is integrity! Shayna has that Sun does not

In the world of sports 99% of athletes are doping whether you you believe it or not, baseball, swimming, basketball, cycling. Where there are large money and medals involved people will do anything to win. That’s a 100%. Yes you have to train it doesn’t mean you can just take it and and that it. But if it is taken because they wanna win.

So if I understand this correctly, the athlete chooses from 3 sealed packages which contain the specimen jar. The athlete also chooses from 3 sealed packages which contain a box in which the collected samples are placed in for transport to a laboratory. Whilst at the Cairns swimming pool gym (also on pool deck), Shayna Jack is taken to a public toilet by an official to collect a urine sample to be sent to a laboratory for testing (as quoted in the video). Why is an official taking an athlete to a contaminated public toilet (at a gym where LCD's are taken) for samples that will be sent to a laboratory!!!

Weak statement from SIA. Blindly following rules without considering common moral sense is a dangerous thing. Also, the statement that they have no evidence that there has ever been found ligandrol in supplements, and that it could also be microdosing is simply a harmful and irrational impeachment. I truely hope Shayna will win her appeal and that her case will eventually help in making a change and make the anti-doping system fair. Go Shayna!!

I think this is so wrong, If all the tests show there was no long-term use and no benefit from it was a tiny trace amount clearly she should not be punished for this. A shity jealous person could have done this to her to get her out of the way or it could just be a freak accident. I do feel this is not something she did and it is wrong and I agree the rules need to be changed. It is very telling that they have been able to pinpoint the time it happened to those last few days in public places before the test was taken, It sounds like a fit-up to me! I wonder if it may have challenged because the sample was taken in a public toilet. It all seems very odd that they are being this hard on her when all the evidence shows how clean she had been for so long. How do we know that a Chinese person or athletes didn't contaminate her as it was such a small amount?
