Four years ago at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Chad le Clos stunned the world when he beat Michael Phelps to an Olympic gold medal in the 200m butterfly. His father Bert, Chad’s best friend and mentor, captured hearts all over the planet with his emotional response to Chad’s victory on the BBC.
Chad goes head-to-head with Phelps again this summer, with their races the most anticipated of the Games, but the journey to Rio has been beset with family pain. Bert has been fighting prostate cancer since his diagnosis in 2015; and his wife Geraldine, Chad’s mum, is fighting breast cancer for the second time, and underwent a double mastectomy in May this year.
“UNBELIEVABLE” is the story of Chad and Bert’s road to Rio, a story of extraordinary emotion, incredible commitment and burning desire for Olympic gold. A OneToWatch production, UNBELIEVABLE has been directed by Sir Matthew Pinsent, himself a four time Olympic Gold medallist and BBC broadcaster.

What a master!!! I wish the whole family to be there at the final in Rio. And of course a very speedo recovery to his parents. I invite all South Africans her in Antwerp, Belgium to watch together the finals. Whatever the result, we will always have the highest respect for what Chad can do. We here in Antwerp have 2 Olympic pools!! Hope to see you once there.

Chad Le Clos. The only swimmer who could make me want for anyone but MP (or my fellow Polish people of course, but sadly, they rarely stand a chance) win a gold medal in swimming. I always hated when anyone beat MP, but watching how much Chad gave in that final stage in London, it was the definition of exceeding your limits and giving a 110% - literally - and it was purely beautiful. And just seeing how much it meant to him made me cry, too. Sport at its best. I feel sad there has to be any beef between the two... I will always admire the hell out of MP, he's a legend, but frankly, I really want for Chad to win today and I will stay up till 4 AM, when the race airs in Poland, and will probably have a heart attack before it finishes. You have my heart, Chad, you're a wonderful soul and an amazing man!

This documentary was so real and beautiful. What he's going through must be extremely hard and really hit him bad. He has so much courage and determination i really hope he succeeds in Rio. He won the silver wo. I will always love and support Chad but he seemed to be too focused on beating Michael rather than focusing on himself. He should of just focused on beating his own time. He came 4th in the 200 but lets hope he's learned his lesson and comes through on the 100 fly. Good Luck for Tonight Chad(:

This is a simple man, who beat his idol - that he emulated for 15 years, day in and day out, 10 hours a day. He is competing with parents suffering from cancer, and has to carry an image to even support his training. Of course he is showing his story. But I love it. Michael Phelps is the perfect swimmer. Chad Le Clos is the human who defeated him once. Look at the number of people Chad Le Clos is inspiring.

I don't have a problem with Chad, but he did get cocky in 2016. It's fine if you're cocky, but you need to be able to back it up. He did not. His Twitter account bio before/during the 2016 Olympics said "History Will Be Made." Well it was, it just wasn't his. And enough with the excuses. It does not matter where you come from. It matters of your determination. Michael Phelps' coach was not a pro coach until after Michael became a success. Michael didn't have access to all of these doctors until after the 2004 Olympics. You think all U.S. citizens have access to these amazing facilities? Think again. Most of these facilities are in colleges. You don't just walk through the door and start using them. I was on the swim team when I was younger. We didn't have these amazing facilities, we had a normal pool, just like any normal public school. And it wasn't even a meter pool, it was a yard pool. Yet, we had an Olympian on the U.S. Swim Team in Rio. She made it to the Olympics. I didn't. She had the passion and determination. Michael Phelps swam with many swimmers in his younger years, but none of them bade it to where he is. Same facilities. You want to train at a university with those "amazing" facilities? You need to work hard to get noticed by scouts and get accepted into those colleges. Ryan Lochte and Conor Dwyer didn't just walk into the University of Florida (especially not Dwyer). Nathan Adrian and Missy Franklin didn't just walk into UC Berkley. Ryan Murphy didn't just walk into the University of Texas. Katie Ledecky didn't just walk into Stanford. So on and so on. Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin grew up playing hockey in Russia, with less resources than Canada or the U.S. has in hockey. Yet, they're up there with other top players in the NHL like Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Phil Kessel, Jonathan Toews, etc. The U.S. Men's Soccer Team has WAY better resources than the Brazilian and Mexican Men's Soccer Teams do. But they are NOWHERE near as good. Same with Jamaica and Track & Field. The U.S. has way better resources than Jamaica does, yet Jamaica always rivals the U.S. in running events (look at Usain Bolt). Australia Swimming has just as good of resources as U.S. Swimming does, yet look at how poorly they've performed recently in Olympics. Quite with the excuses. You're as good as you want to be and prepare to be. Michael Phelps barely trained for London in 2012 compared to 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, and 2016 Rio, and it showed. You could easily tell his head wasn't all in it in 2012. That's his fault. And he's 7 years older than Chad! Ryan Lochte, could easily rival Michael Phelps and be closer to his medal tally, but if you know Lochte, you know he likes to party. So obviously, he hasn't done as well as he could. Show less REPLY

the wrong thing about this is that life isn't fair. life just isn't fair. I am a swimmer and have seen many other swimmers that start from different areas of what I call the "ladder". the ladder is the representation of life's different levels. What this video is saying is that micheal phelps was born into a higher rung on the ladder than Chad le Clos and that phelps has more advantages in training and medical help, and training pools and such, and I can say that that is true, but people shouldn't dwell so much on what they don't have and USE what they have and be grateful because their training situations could be worse. I have encountered many situations in my swimming when I noticed how different each swimmer is. I've seen other olympic swimmer's lives through videos on KZbin and many of them have started from different rungs of the ladder. I don't dwell on what I don't have, I use what I have and I read a quote that taught me to know that the past is in the past and you shouldn't look back unless to see how far you've come. if Chad le clos went through some hard things and micheal phelps hasn't, as this video is suggesting, than why doesn't Chad le clos have as many victories as michael phelps? it's the journey that makes the man. and I have read michael phelps' "Beneath the surface" and he says that it doesn't matter what the swimmer in the lane next to you has or doesn't have, same going for you, it only makes a victory if you work harder than him.

He acted like a 10 year old. What he said about his parents has no bearing on how he chose to act when the moment was near. Totally disrespectful. Actions speak louder than words, even when you are an immature, big mouthed, little boy. As I said before, he is a 1 gold medal winner when managed to squeak by Phelps on one occasion

Guys stop criticizing, Michael Phelps didn't win no gold in his first Olympic in 2000 either. I tell you right now, this guy is the future Michael Phelps, once he gets going there wont be any stop. Plus the reason Michael has more gold than any other Olympian is mainly because a swimmer can win up to feking 8 gold medals while other sports are limited.

agreed. also: not all of Phelps' gold medals came from the individual swimming events in the Olympics - a lot of them were from the relays that he was a part of. for those gold medals, you also have to give credit to Phelps' teammates. which leads me to say that Le Clos probably would've gotten more than 1 gold medal (both in 2012 & 2016) if his team as a whole had qualified for those relay events. *tl;dr* - you could be a fast and great swimmer, but get held back by your team.

These comment are rediculous, Both these swimmers are talented and hard working both with set backs outside of the pool. No need to get all egotistical over them with who is better and for what reason. Appreciate the fact they have brought the sport to a whole new level and how the have became role models to the next generation. Instead of hating on either swimmer and the country they are from, just admire them for who they are. All swimmers are as hard working in that level of competion and all should be given the respect they deserve for even making it the olympics. Pathetic.

+Sean Bolden +Kyle Shadeck "Talked shit." Sheep eating the drivel. If you actually read the context, you'd see that Le Clos wasn't "talking shit", just being frank. Phelps said the butterfly times were not fast, essentially insulting every single butterfly swimmer. Even if it's true, the insinuation is they suck, which is rude. People say Le Clos was talking shit for saying Phelps is a bad role model and telling him to shut up. What actually happened: Phelps got ANOTHER DUI and had to miss 2015 Worlds,. Had he not done that: they could have competed and there would be no controversy. After worlds, where Le Clos won gold in 100m bfly, someone asked Le Clos how he felt about Phelps saying they were slow. He was honest: "well, I did a better time. So he can keep quiet now." How is that shit talk? It's the truth. Then someone asked him how he felt about Phelps considering everything. Le Clos said "I'm hurt by the exchange. I think he's GOAT and I really respect him as a swimmer. But if I was as great as he was, I would conduct myself in a way children would be proud of…" Repeatedly, he's asked a question and answers, frankly but respectfully. Tons of other athletes have criticized each other (see King/Efimova), but people are butthurt because this is about Phelps in an olympic year. Otherwise, nobody would give a crap. And I love the hypocrisy: no one can criticize/beat Phelps. People keep saying Le Clos is arrogant for saying "I am the best" but they ignore context. He has said: "With respect to my competition, but I am the best. On the day of competition, I have to think that way in order to win." This is literally the mindset of EVERY athlete, you can't go into a competition telling yourself you're 2nd fiddle. "Le Clos is the devil. Phelps is an angel:" Simple headline for simple people.

I understand now why Le Clos comes across as a hot head. When he has family members, coaches, agents, and all types of other people telling him how much better he is than the rest of the world or how Phelps would never be as great as his is had he been placed in his shoes or even convincing him that he was the sole reason why Phelps returned to the pool, hes gonna get filled with hot air. They basically portray him as a god for winning one gold medal and shit on Phelps like it was his fault that he was born in the United States. All this documentary was was basically everyone making excuses as to why Phelps is so good and why Chad hasn't achieved what Michael has yet.

Sadly, people like you don't learn how to read/comprehend with context. Only listen to what NBC idiots tell you. i shouldn't blame you, I guess I should blame the American education system.

He's a jerk .. Always talking crap about Phelps and even his father saying Oh Phelps won't beat him. And then standing there in front of him shadowboxing trying to taunt him and even on the starting block trying to get him into a stare down. All because he was lucky enough to win one time. Well karma is a bitch better known as 4th place. I read and comprehend just fine thank you and I do not watch NBC. You want to spout off excuses and keep pointing to Phelps personal flaws in regards to things that don't have anything to do with swimming go ahead.

Sandra Bond People are criticizing Le Clos's character that has nothing to do with swimming but people can't criticize Phelps'? That makes no sense. His swimming suspensions are directly related to his swimming career. Please show me where he was talking crap about Phelps: I have read the articles about what Le Clos said and the american media continues to take 1 sentence out of a paragraph of what he says. Have you seen Bert Le Clos? The guy constantly calls his son a lion and a champion. Are you honestly surprised that he believes his son will beat Phelps? He sounds like the proud, confident father who believes in his son. Also I love how everyone is conveniently forgetting Phelps started all of this by insulting butterfly swimmers.

In the end after watching Chad in the last part of the documentary I came to admire how he humbly tells to the world that Michael Phlephs is his idol. I think that is a good trait of him. He envision himself great like Michael and he made that happened too. That is a good mindset to be the place He has always wanted would really help one to be successful.

+Michaila Wilson Your right Michaila..I watched the interview when he was asked about it. He answered it very honest..I don't see any wrong with it...Like chaf has said that's being me my brother and I always play boxing a lot..if your open minded i think he is just warming up and coping with the pressure that the world is watching you..He said in the interview..He don't know that that was the reaction of Phelps in his back and chad said I think he dont like the way I acted but that has not something to do with him..He is still my idol...I too don't like how Michael Phelps frawned his face..His not being sport too. And besides Phelps is not the only one in the scene..Maybe it's a big deal with Phelps he gave meaning to Chad's action because he beat him in 2012..It's still a win win situation like Chad said..I got him in 2012..he got me in Rio..then in Phelps last race they are tie in Silver. For me they are both great swimmer..

+byron dula if your going to ask me I don't like how Michael Phelps reacted..As if he is the guy whose going to start the trouble first in the scene..If Chad was being playful that time then that's him that's nothing to do with Phelps...Michael is the older one if he is trully humble enough a true model he should not acted that way too..Like the saying goes it's how you react which makes the difference..Who knows Chad was just warming up that time...It's the ego that make phelps reacted that way and for me that's more disappointing..Anyway when Chad was doing the boxing act Phelps was not the only one there so why will he looked that way to chad considering his 31 years old chad is only 24. Phelps should acted more mature one, more humble but with the looks he made I see someone who has a big pride in his body..I was disappointed actually..Just like chad has said in his interview Phelps will always be an inspiration..so he better act one ( its good he went to rehab after the addiction he was involved in)

+Ma. del Pilar Cavazos That definitely was not Michael Phelp's best time. He went to rehab and he is working on himself. He had a rough relationship with his father which is also on the mend much to everyone's surprise. Michael isn't perfect and he hates that everyone expects him to be. You can read more about it there are tons of articles and videos.

+Donna Tong Gives sob story about Michael, but when Le Clos does it: he's such a whiner. Kettle, meet Pot. American hypocrisy at its finest. "That definitely was not Chad Le Clos' best performance. He is humbled and he is working on himself. He has inferior resources, less sponsorships, and less practice with media/PR. Chad isn't perfect and he hates that everyone expects him to be. You can read more about it there are tons of articles and videos."

You don't need any fancy infrastructure or fancy pool to train. you just need a pool to learn swimming. The key for success is who tries more. If Michael is that successful he tried more than others.
