The time has come to fire this tractor up. Of course, it can't just happen, there has to be some trouble. Will I prevail over the forces that try to stop me? Will it run? Will I have to put money in the swear jar? Tune in and find out.

Super 88 one of the better tractors Oliver made. I had no doubt it would run again. We bought a Super 88 diesel out of a bone yard thinking maybe for parts. We were pulling it out of the weeds and for the hell of it my brother popped the clutch and it came to life. It ran a little rough but it was leaking fuel all over out of the fuel lines. A few days later and after the leaks were pretty much fixed it ran the flail chopper no problem. Today I used it to grind feed. Go figure!!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
I knew it would run, but I always get nervous that I forgot something. With it being a project that someone else did most of the work, and I have no info as to exactly what they did, that raises the pucker level a little more.

Thanks! I've heard of it being done, but it's the first time I have done it. For as long as it sat, I felt it was important to do it with it being a fresh rebuild. Old engines usually have a layer of sludge/slimy oil built up that protect it from corrosion. A fresh engine will rust faster because the oil all drains to the bottom and leaves everything else dry.

Chris, I only have 3 88s left out of 19, after my sale. The one looks exactly like that one, patina and all, only mine has factory power steering that drives off the generator. It's the one I have 10k in the motor and fuel pump. I like how thoroughly you are going over that to assure no damage is done with as long as it has sat. keep the content coming.

Awesome video Chris, I love the sound of those diesels so much. When I was first getting started working on our tractors, I thought the diesel tractors were just a common thing since we had 3 diesels and 2 gas tractors in the fleetline and 3 digits. Little did I know then! I wouldn’t trade anything for the diesel tractors that we have. Bailey @ The Oliver Acreage
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
Thanks, Bailey. What gets me is that in 1955, Oliver had over half of the diesel tractor market. Granted, diesel was a small percentage of total tractor sales, but they had the lead on what would become the main fuel type for farm tractors everywhere. As cool as the XO-121 is, I think the work they put into that, with the encouragement of the Ethyl Corporation, ultimately set them back. The 1800A set a fuel economy record for gasoline powered tractors that was never broken, but if they had put that time and effort into higher horsepower diesels, who knows what they could have become.

Great teaching vid Chris. I looked up some specks on the Super 88 and noted Oliver used the same CID engine for both diesel and gas. We had a Super 88 Diesel back in the late 50's early 60's. Pulled 3-16 Oliver trailer plow and a 11' Oliver Disk. There were several Olivers in the neighborhood as we had a dealer less than 10 miles away at Athens Indiana. Great guy by the name of Chuck Crippen. I was 12 years old when Dad traded it off on an IH 460. (I still have the 460.) I remember riding with Dad pulling the plow and other equipment. Great to see one coming back to new life.
@ThatOliverGuyChris

That's correct. Oliver figured that they could help control costs with common parts. Most of the early Oliver diesels used the same pistons, gas or diesel. All of the difference was in the heads.

Sunday morning Oliver fix and a weekly reset for an old man. Your videos always bring back memories. I always get a chuckle at your Aviation Form-A-Gasket every time I use the big container of it I still have. It just got used on Clyde the Power King which had loose valve seats and I finally found a Speed Shop that does aluminum headwork that could install seats. But that is another story about a mfg. having a poorly designed engine. That Ollie sounded good and I hope you show him on the break in dyno. Fumes in the shop. OSHA will allow a diesel engine van in slope mines to take crews to the machines but not gasoline engines. Go figure!! Maybe because of Def and particulate filters. If I were to win a lottery for BIG $$$ I would get you a smoke evacuation machine. In our shop, when we were running a Diesel, the owner would just vacate the premises for the Eagles and a highball or 2. Thank you for the time and energy you take to make the videos.

There could be exceptions, so double check the bearings before shelling out the $$$ for hubs.

The gas used the same 2 piece wrist pin bushings, so they can potentially throw a rod like the diesels do. I think they are less prone to it due to the lower compression ratio. If you start hear a knock, don't wait to see if it fixes itself.

How do you tell if the 310 engine has the updates without taking it apart?🤔
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Ай бұрын
@Elijah-me5yg the only way with the wrist pins is disassembly. You can check the rod bolts through the dipstick hole. The updated rod bolts are 12 points, and the originals were 6. You could assume that if the 12 points are in , then someone took the time to do the wrist pins, but there's no guarantee they did. The early style rods use bolts and nuts on the rod caps, and there was no update there, but they still benefit from the one piece wrist pin bushings.
@Elijah-me5yg
