I believe that the Hunters in Bloodborne generally want too be as close as possible to what they are hunting in order to be sprayed by the blood from their prey. In the game this serve as a healing mechanic for taking damage and I believe there is something similar in the lore as well.

The beasts of bloodborne were far more durable and regenerative, in order to kill the beasts of bloodborne the hunters needed to be fast and get in and deal as much damage as possible. Clean slices were healed too quickly, so the saw was designed to literally rip the beasts apart. As for the the closed state it was meant for the tight alleys of the city streets.

I'd say that the obvious reason for the trick weapon's modality is the extreme levels of variation in both the physiology of the beasts the hunters fight, and the variety of conditions they fight them in. It (theoretically) allows hunters to be prepared for fighting both big and small and armored and unarmored beasts in tight alleys, small rooms, and big open courtyards with whatever type of weapon is best suited for the situation without having to carry twice as much weight on them at any given time.

One thing they brought up about the short range, is that you could punch the opponent. However punches don't usually do good against flesh, sure if you hit someone hard enough you can break a bone, and if you do a proper gut punch you can basically explode their kidney because it's a really weak organ. However if you're going up against a fleshy thing, like a stomach, or something cloth like like a padded gambeson. Sure it's serrated so it will get caught by the cloth, and The Cutting part is in the extended form. However the four words folded in would you good against flesh, and that would be an advantage over simply crunching the opponent

Additionally it is a terrible cutting weapon (as evident here) because the hunters want to hemorrhage beasts to death as they are sustained by blood during rally and visceral attacks. Hence the more gripping and crude tearing of saw teeth instead of a honed blade.
@rolandswift43115 ай бұрын
@@Bersh-xq4jy Yes and no. The hunter's aren't actually sustained by the beast's blood and viscera. The developers have outright said the rally system is about morale. You feel reassured when you see yourself making a big chunk of progress, so you can push yourself to fight on just a little more. The reason they want to cause as much blood loss as possible is more akin to bloodletting. The beasts lost their humanity due to imbibing tainted blood, so you need to get the blood out of their system to cure them, or kill them in the attempt.
@thehaloofthesun71745 ай бұрын
Morale has to do with blood echoes. The blood from the beasts still has blood echoes which invigorate the hunter, not by consumption but by absorbing the echoes within the blood. Canonically, hunters that dream cannot really die until they lose their blood echoes. This is why your echoes are left where you died. They are what gives a hunter morale. You can see this also with other items, such as Blue Elixir, which can only be used by hunters as their superior will via blood echoes maintains their consciousness and prevents them from fading into nothing. The implication being that a non hunter drinking the elixir would just fade out of existence. @@rolandswift4311

Love the Saw Spear, was my first consistent weapon in the game. As far as the points of failure, that’s where the scale of the saw spear and the trick mechanic solve those concerns. Your version was about 1/2-3/4 scale in comparison. That scale leaves more space for your hand (fingies) and gives more reach while closed. The locking lever/trigger used in game clamps into the blade when extended and is an elongated piece to give it more reinforcement. I get concerns about failure at the pivot point, but with a larger and thicker blade comes a sturdier pin system. Over time the locking system could wear down, but when you have the Hunter’s Workshop to return to, you can repair as many times as needed.

Part of the BB game logic for Saw Cleaver/Spear is that the "closed" position or un-transformed, the point is that it's meant for beasts and not humans. And the beasts are very quick, closing distance on you rapidly. So a very close range weapon you can swing quickly is needed.
@thehaloofthesun71745 ай бұрын
The closed form, lore wise, is purely for up close fighting, specifically with beasts. So monsters with claws, in the specific instance of going one to one with a monster. The open form is for groups of monsters. The Saif is similar, and people generally use it up close in closed form where it's difficult for the monster to pounce or swipe at you as you dance around it. Since Hunters (like the player character) are basically vampires, the weapons are also visceral in order to produce blood that splashes all over the attacker. The echoes within the blood are absorbed by the attacker, healing and strengthening them. So, going up close and personal, with zero reach, is actual of benefit to a Hunter, who can heal from all the blood coming out of the beast as they tear into it. Lorewise, these weapons were designed to kill beasts, not people. Weapons like the gun rapier and gun spear are better suited for that.

Closed position probably would be useful to have when specifically in close quarters, presuming you made use of the grip and instead of using it like a knuckle duster, maybe hold it closer to the base. The saw teeth on the outside then would probably work better if they were sharpened on the "backs", so instead of trying to use them to have the teeth bite into stuff, you swung the weapon like they do in the game, in which case those saw teeth on the outside would basically act like tiny blades doing a lot of shallow "tip cuts", basically. Or even just the consideration that being a more sizable chunk of metal ingame, even closed in they'd be pretty sturdy bonking implements. And when closed, you have the blade better braced so that you're less likely to damage the mechanism when striking something rigid. - Then you can extend them for when you have the room, want the extra reach and then you can make use of that little bit of sharp edge towards the tip.

Which is perfect for the letting of tainted blood (cutting and tearing flesh simultainiusly), the beast hunts revolve around. Although the phial abilities are mostly impossible, the transforming aspect of the weapon would be really interesting to see. The Charge Blade would be neat too, but that would be way more dangerous, complicated, and expensive to try to make a functioning version of.

@kirbyis4ever5 ай бұрын
That sawspear looks GNARLY and the damage it can inflict is just as nuts. Reminds me of shark teeth - sharp enough to cut, but jagged to rip and tear flesh. Nasty piece of work! From a bloodborne universe perspective they've apparently mastered locking blades and it will never break, and the hunters have also mastered being able to flick them open and closed on demand. If this was possible IRL you could get some extra ooph by flicking it open and closed on your strikes, just like in the game. Since this is reality though the mechanisms will break, and it's evident that having a longer blade will be more useful 9 out of ten times.
@sumoslamer1805 ай бұрын
The closed mode of the saw-spear is to fight ravaging beasts that are not going to allow you to use your reach for long. Having the spear switch to being a bladed fist type weapon allows you to more easily strike at zero range. Imagine a werewolf leaping on top of you and you have a spear with you. You failed to skewer the werewolf as he leapt and now your spear's shaft is only useful as a stick to hold off the wolf's jaws. Now instead imagine that you have this saw-spear and switch to a saw mode. Now, instead of simply holding the wolf's jaw at bay, you can also saw its jaw off with your shortened weapon. Essentially, it's a weapon designed to allow reach when fighting an opponent at close range, or fight a grappling foe at basically no range.

interestingly, the problem of reach is why the Saw Spear and Saw Cleaver are lower tier weapons in bloodborne, because of their lack of reach in the folded position, you quite often will have to put yourself into a position where you are prone to be countered. By lore, I think the saw type weapons are made specifically for ripping through the toughened hides of beast-like monsters, where more refined blades would have some sort of issue. In a similar manner, the folded position isn't for engagements against more robust weapons, but for quick attacks against ambushers in narrow streets, where the extended weapon 'should' have less viability. Really though, all the lore in the world doesn't make up for the actual issues some trick weapons present, and you can hilariously see those problems in real time in the game.

While you are 'capable' of beating the game with said weapons even at maximum level, the Saw cleaver is only C/D/-/C, making it middling at best even in strength based tiers. You forget, that what makes the weapon effective is not its strength, but the fact that it can be useful in a number of builds without much effort put into your own stats, making it a generalist weapon. However, without being specialized, there are a number of later enemies, and a great many bosses, it is not effective or even useful against, where other weapons are much better and higher rated, that you get in those same areas.

A thing to consider with all hunter weapons is the enemy you're expected to go up against and the environment in which the fight will take place. They're meant primarily for mindless beasts on the streets of fantasy london. Tight quarters and pure overwhelming offense. The extended setting is for when you have the space both around you and between you and the enemy for the reach to be effective and the retracted setting is for when you're either fighting in a space that's either too tight for long weapons to be as effective as shorter ones or the beast is already right up in your face and refuses to relent. A situation where what's essentially a more gnarly knuckleduster would actually be preferable. We also see that the retracted position is the prefered setting for after-death dismemberment(just in case) but i'll admit i don't actually know if that would be more effective or not from a biomechanical perspective.

It looks like the functionality is in the fact that you would have a large chance of being ambushed by your prey. Like you said at @12:15, when you get ambushed or something drops down on you you can quickly defend with it in the closed position. Then once you get distance you can open it up to take them on at a distance. You could also use the closed position to quickly take out weaker prey and then move on.

Reach is why I like the hunter axe it goes from a short axe to a long axe, nice and simple. Good flow close quarters where a long pole would be cumbersome and good for more open places to deliver heavier strikes with greater reach. The most mundane and therefore practical of the bloodborne weapons.

so I have a couple thoughts. The biggest is that these weapons are designed to fight things that are very heavy and unlikely to move so ultimately testing with things that are loosely standing there like the pool noodle doesnt seem to be very... Verisimilitude? while people will jump out of the way when hit they arent gonna bounce away when hit. Translating things from the game though, theres a hidden stat for weapons called Tear. The beasts are said to have a lot of regenerative capabilities so something that tears would be harder to heal from than a smooth cut (tear deals extra damage to beasts, which is why the Saw Spear and Saw Cleaver feel so strong). Beasts are also fast so it's less a question of "How close do I have to be to use the closed mode" and more "How close is the enemy when I attack", having a whole blade length of teeth usable even at punching range is a great way to be able to fight something thats faster than you, while being able to extend it to full sword length gives you proper combat strength even when one or the other makes some distance. As for the hinge mechanism, with respect to everyone I've seen make these things, the weapons in Bloodborne are chunky, the blade on the Saw Spear and Cleaver look like their a finger thick, let alone the hinge, so I dont think they're in much danger of flopping around nor breaking. Given how they sound when opening and closing I'm inclined to say the hinge is probably very tight as well. HOWEVER, I can defend the hinge on a physics basis. The change attack has you swing the weapon while extending or retracting it, this would create a whipping effect kinda like how a flail works, resulting in, based on these tests, a truly horrifying strike

i believe the purpose of the closed trick weapons is for "stealth" (hear me out). in the earliest days of the beast plague, the church hunters went to hunt beasts in the secrecy of the night. so, having a weapon you could hide in your coat but still fight with if you were attacked before you could fully deploy it would be EXTREMELY useful. then after the hunters went public, as the plague could no longer be kept under wraps, it was how the workshop was used to making weapons so they just never stopped. Edit: Once the hunters went public, they obviously would keep the weapons they already had on hand, which would then become synonymous with church hunters in the eyes of the public. They would then likely keep making trick weapons because that is what people expected to see when the church hunters rolled up to save the city.

it looks very convincing but i feel like its more of a prototype. The locking mechanism in particular does not seem finished, the blade is still articulating quite noticably even when the machanism is supposed to be locked

There's a version made by a professional swordsmith floating around on here, the hinge, lock and blade are all beefier

Funny thing is I mained this exact weapon. Saw spear is under rated 8:02 since some of the monsters had longer appendages than you it helped to close in super close to hack and slash at their torso. Plus as you take damage you heal as you deal damage so the weapon really completes with the mechanics in mind. The extended Saw spear was good for keeping them at bay. Practical use in real life wouldn't be that high since you'd surely break it from constant form switches. My God is this for sale ?! 😭 Its so cool !

I also presume that.. THICKER metal brackets and joining parts might add stability and increase functionality? You did a great job, and holy moly that thing IS Gnarly.

The closed position is for close combat in narrow streets and Holmes. If you've ever played bloodborne you know it can be pretty claustrophobic in the Baroque style of the Cities

I played through the entire game with the saw cleaver in closed position, the attack speed is what did it for me. Also the serrated edge makes it highly effective against beasts.

The saw spear always reminded me of those tree branch cutters you can get from DIY stores. After bloodborne the main character could do gardens on weekends for some extra cash.

Great video, nice job on making the weapon. I just have some suggestion to you if you want to make an upgarded model of the bloodborn trick weapons. Could be interesting to see. I think if the saw blade was a normal blade it could be good too when closed. Because the teeth get caught in what you cut which make the wound look nastier but less deep and it can stop the blade itself. Also, you made it out of a saw blade. Saw are quite thin, so they are pretty light. If there was more weight, chopping attacks with it would be more effective and help with cutting too because of inertia. But the weight would be harder to balance between both "mode". For use cases when closed, it remind me of a kung fu weapon: the crescent moon knife just without the points at both ends. It could be used in the same way i guess if it was toothless. Anyway, its just some suggestion and it was the first video of you i saw (pun intended). Hyped to see the next in the serie ;)

The reason for the mechanism it is simple really. Many beasts have different toughness to different things and the city itself. Many beasts's flesh are so tough that the hunters need to make multiple little cuts to make sure the wounds don't close. The city Yharnam itself has thin alleyways and small areas the beasts like to hide. Last the hunters are literally assassins who need to kill without being seen so the shorter the weapon the easier to hide.
@londonreverse17495 ай бұрын
there are two things for the close position First you can heal if you (hunters) get blood in your wounds. this might be some of the reasons why you would want to get close to get blood in your wounds and heal second there are a lot of tight spaces in Yharnam to the point where it would almost be unpractical to have a long weapon.

The saw in the closed position would be more functional inside of a confined space like a building with the open setting being more useful Outdoors

Ofc the saw aspect is more of a fantasy thing but I think something that could make it a bit more practical would be to give it a kris/flamberge style edge. Additionally if there was a spike on the backwards facing side of the blade that could tuck into the handle like a pseudo-tang while it's unfolded that would give it a bit more practicality in the folded position. It's meant to be a close up dagger like weapon when its folded so why not emphasize what daggers are really good at. Overall I like the build its very faithful to the game and it looks killer but I'm just brainstorming ideas to make the concept of a saw spear a bit less inept

This was sick. I wish you had tried holding it closer to the base of the handle and swinging it like a hatchet in the xlosed position.
