Tears in my eyes. I'm Sicilian. My great-aunt was a nun for over 60 years in New Jersey. The way the sisters are making the salad reminds me of grandmother and her sisters cooking in the kitchen on Sunday. Our salad was similar. We didn't use garlic or basil. My grandmother added a pinch of sugar. We would eat bread separately. All my elders passed on, and I miss them so much. Prayers to you both, your family, and friends. EXACTLY how I make my Italian salad. My mother was Sicilian, and that was the kind of salad we ate growing up, along with ziti, penne, mostaccioli, ravioli, or spaghetti, along with lots of homemade gravy with fall-off- the-fork tender pork chops, hot and sweet sausages, juicy pigs feet, - my Mom's favorite - and lots of meatballs simmering on the stove for hours for Sunday supper. The house smelled soooo good! And the crusty Italian bread kept by the stove that we would dip into the gravy while it was simmering away. I miss my mom, 😢 and I'm glad I paid attention while she cooked because I love making it all too. And dessert! Mama Mia!! 😊 Thanks, Mom. ❤

This generation of moms had magic hands! Whatever they touched flourished, grew and became better. My mom had lots of plants and flowers and our home was a beautiful botanical garden. Just like Nonna Gina, she too grew all sorts of vegetables and fruits in our backyard. When she cooked, she would ask me to pick whatever she needed and I would simply pick them fresh from the backyard. The scents of our backyard is embedded in my memories and this video has brought it all back. God bless Nonna Gina, her sister Julia and their “baby sister” Maria!❤❤❤

This is the way my Mother’s made this salad since I was young. Another salad we used to eat was shredded cabbage with oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. In hard times this was our salad.
