On the streets of the Sicilian capital Palermo, police officers were clapped and cheered as word spread that the person they were arresting was none other than Matteo Messina Denaro - Italy's most wanted mafia boss.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
After 30 years, justice had finally caught up with the man who once bragged he'd murdered enough people 'to fill a cemetery'.

Actually sicilan mafia is still backed at a high political level. Just in a different way then the past. Many also think this arrest follows a sort of negotiation of mafia with the statal power for an exchange between Messina Denaro and other mafia bosses like Filippo and Francesco Graviano currently in prison (known for being friends of Berlusconi back in the 90s before their arrest).

@@eleonorap.8067 Not at all. The mob tortures and murders innocent citizens, uninvolved relatives, and honest civil servants. That is obviously not what I proposed. There is a very stark difference between a mafia terrorist and a random person commuting to work: the two are entitled to asymmetrical treatment based on their actions. Giving Italian jihads witness protection programs in exchange for info clearly isn't a deterrent to the crime, and is not a sufficient punishment.

I am Italian and I basically agree with the professor that is interviewed in this video. The old Sicilian mafia is dead, as far as I remember there has not been a single mafia murder in Sicily for years. The old "mafiosi" are dead or in prison, and only Matteo Messina Denaro was missing from the wanted list. The problem is that the financial capital generated by their activities has been invested across the world, and it is likely that many descendants of the old "mafiosi" can be found in London, and you think that they are brilliant managers who have come to make investments in one of the many financial capitals of the world...

He has been there for 30 years. As romantic as it sounds that he has been “found” I question it. There are many things that are needed to be in place for 30 years worth of being “on the run” It would take a number of those things to fail for him to be caught. More likely either his safety could no longer be guaranteed internally or they had enough of protecting him from the outside. So lost support or dethroned… internally. He was no longer a reliable or effective source… externally
