Italian Reacts to Polish Christmas Traditions 🇵🇱

During Christmas Eve, we also sing carols. In the Catholic church, we sing them until February 2nd, because that's how long the Christmas period lasts. That's how long the Christmas trees are in our homes and church. Some people put up the Christmas tree on January 7. The day before (January 6) is the Epiphany. Fish was once considered "proper meat" (like beef, poultry...) and was a symbol of Christianity.Therefore it is allowed and even important during Christmas Eve dinner. Advent is very important in Poland. People (not all, but many) go early in the morning, when it is still dark to have Holy Mass. It is called Roraty. We go with light (candles, small lanterns). Some go several times, others every day, for 4 weeks. In churches and homes we also have Christmas nativity scenes. An empty place at the table is also for someone who has no family, is lonely, or... for a deceased soul (this is a remnant of the old Slavic times). We have many more traditions, dishes, customs.. It is difficult to mention all of them. Much depends on the region of Poland.❤️

Most of the traditions during Christmas Eve actually come from Slavic times-not only the empty seat at the table, but also hay, 12 dishes, and the Christmas tree (although it was originally a sheaf of hay or a podłaźniczka). Christmas Eve is a remnant of Szczodre Gody, which was incorporated into the Christmas celebrations, as well as the tradition of caroling from house to house.

The most important tradition on Christmas Eve is to watch Home Alone after dinner or at 8 p.m.

@@freedzeed462 A wiesz co żart? Gdyby film nie miał oglądalności, nie dawali by go c roku.. Poza tym to fajny film, szczególnie dla dzieciaków. Starsze pokolenie być może nie ogląda już ale pamiętam niedawno jak zjechała się cała rodzina na wigilię i po kolacji usiedliśmy z dzieciakami, które jeszcze tego nie oglądały, śmiały się do łez... Trochę dystansu

I know it's strange but in Catholic tradition, fish is not consider meat proper, so it can be eaten during fasting periods. :) Interestingly enough, fasting during Christmas Eve is not required by the Catholic Church, it's more of a tradition in Poland.

In Italy I don't understand panettone. It's everywhere.... Recipe for this kind of cake is so simply 🙂 in Poland we say babka piaskowa. Possible that why I stole heart my Teresa. She love eat for colazione with coffe. And she don't need wait for Christmas 🙂

In the old days, eating fish, usually consumed by the poor, was considered mortification (for the upper classes). Besides, fish has been a symbol of Christianity from the beginning. Its meat was considered pure. And another little curiosity: during the Middle Ages in Prussia, among other places, beavers were eaten during Lent - since they swam in the water, their meat was considered as fastidious as fish.

Ja każdego roku robię dużą ilość chrupiących pierogów drożdżowych z kapustą i grzybami. Wszyscy uwielbiają. Karpia podaję w galarecie w całości. W sklepie zazwyczaj kupuje się już wyłowionego z wody i przyrządzam dzień przed. Kiedyś u babci pływał w wannie. Życzę Tobie i Twoim bliskim Szczęśliwego Nowego 2025 roku

No... I don't know who does it, but I don't know anyone who would drink much. Definitely not vodka. Maybe some wine after the super when watching movies.
