My friend is italian and his house is the best place to be for dinner. I don't even mind that I don't understand most of the conversations since they're in Italian, and there's always lots of family there, it just feels like home. They have a pizza oven, make their own crust and sauce, etc. and it's the best thing on earth to enjoy. Make friends with an Italian. Trust me. Awesome humans.

One of my oldest friends is an Italian immigrant. Came over when he was maybe five or even younger. His mom is the BEST cook in the world. Her lasagna is outrageous. Funny thing, he and his Dad worked at pizza places. Both places they worked at were "legendary" in my area of Scranton Pa. They were both the pizza chefs at these places. One day he invited me in for pizza. Not his. Not his Dad's, but his MOM'S. OMG... Best pizza I ever had. SOOOO different than any American pizza. I loved it and became addicted to it. Talking about this is making me want to drive home and make his 90 year old mom make me a pie. LOL Well... ask her kindly. She'd probably do it. Nicest woman i've ever met.

Inedible pizza is served at schools, all-you-can-eat salad bars, truck stops, 7-11, Domino's, Sbarro's, Little Caesars, ALL frozen pizza, LA, most of the Midwest and even many places in NYC. It's not worth eating the empty calories and fat if it's too salty or just plain sucks. Why would anyone ever say something is "pretty good"??? Either it is or it isn't. I’m Italian and I have tried ny pizza. Maybe I’ve not tried the best one but it’s a completely different from Italian one. It’s not only the taste. It’s an other way way to be. The key issues are completely different. And also the way to judge is different. An American usually judge positively a large amount of cheese and toppings. An Italian usually judge positively a well done, well lit and well cooked dough and the good quality of 2-3 poor ingredients on the top. That’s all. It’s not the pizza itself. It’s the culture of food completely different. Sorry for my English.

@@riproar11 Yeah, well it was awhile back when I went. Somewhere btw 2010-2011. They were still raving about it then. It is an odd story. I am always on the hunt for good food. Scoured NYC for pizza, pastrys, hot dogs, coffee, sushi, CHINESE FOOD-especially Chinatown Queens, etc., during the time wife and I lived there, but no longer live in Brooklyn. The day I was there at DiFara's the film crew from O Globo was there. A major media outlet from Brazil. They came specifically to review pizza joints. Got to know their crew, especially the knockout female reporter. We chatted for awhile, since I speak Portuguese fairly well. Had waited over two hours for my pizza. The place was packed. They wanted to film me and my reaction. Pie comes out. I take a bite. Camera in my face. I lookup and 50 people are staring back at me in anticipation. The first thought running through my head is if I tell the people what I really think about the pizza they will tear me from limb to limb. So, I lied and told them in English and Portuguese how great it was. I was shocked and disappointed. It was good but not great. Will say I was just in NYC. Stopped by the Whole Foods at Bryant Park. First floor on your right is the coffee and pastry section. Walk in on your right, middle section probably mid way up in the bins, I think it was the Sticky Bun I got. That thing was to die for. Nice video Jon. I used to live on Charles St, between Bleecker and West 4th so your video brought back fond memories. Am wondering if you have done a review of pizzerias in the other boroughs? My own findings are that the best pizza is actually outside of Manhattan in Brooklyn, Queens, etc., where places don't have to deal with the same level of volume (in most cases) and the quality and oversight is really good. Also, some places make really thin crust pizza that has to be eaten when it comes right out of the oven as it doesn't reheat well. Great work on your part and a nice video done with your friend from Italy.

Its takes hours to be seated at Lucali, so it is not convenient. Especially for the video since they are going to many pizza joints in one day

I've been in Italy and tried the Pizza, the quality of the ingredients are much better than also in many European Countries. Here in Sweden we have good pizza but compare to Italy it's shit. There's a famous TV profile here who also owns the only real Italian pizzeria here who said "It's a really tasty sandwich" but it's not a Pizza. I would say the same for NY pizza. Those who have tried Italian Pizza knows what I'm talking about.

That last pizza looks amazing. When visiting NYC I have my favorite 2 spots to eat pizza that I wish you visited. But as you said, everyone has their spot. And there’s way too many pizza places, and great pizza places in NYC to expect my favorite spots are another person’s favorites. And are my favorite places the best? Impossible to say, b/c I haven’t visited every place; an impossible task. I’d really love to try the last place shown.. Yum!

The trouble with inviting an Italian to test a NYC style of pizza is that not all Italians would qualify to assess whether a pizza is good or not! What i mean is, the majority of Italians fron the north and centre of Italy haven't got a clue regarding pizzas..If you want to have a fair judgement eating a NYC pizza you need to ask somebody from Naples in particular where pizza is relegion, and more in general from southern Italians. The likelyhood of what a Neapolitan tester would say is: yea American pizza is ok, but nothing to do with the real pizza made in Naples which is out of this world. I live in the UK and i know their takeaway pizzas well, which are similar to the USA ones, and i'm a pizza chef myself in the process of opening a pizza takeaway myself. I will be making my pizzas the way the English and Americans like it, not the Neapolitan way, simply because i believe it lends itself less well for the takeaway purpose and the USA style is more suited for their palates. But i still believe the traditional neapolitan pizza is way better.

Here Be Barr If you haven't already, it would be cool to have you do a viddeo della pizza in Italia, with recommendation from Gianni! That dollar pizza is still better than the crappy corporate chain pizza. For that price, you are not going to get the highest grade mozz on the slice. Still, it's pretty good and only $1.00. With that said, Bleeker Street uses the freshest and best quality ingredients and it is why the $3.50 a slice is very justified. I have no problem spending good money for a slice or a pie, as long as the the quality of the product is of high standard!

To be fair, people from different countries can have different palates and there can even be differences in palate between regions within the same country as well. If you look at mozzarella itself, which is the most eaten type of cheese in the USA and the most commonly used cheese for pizzas, it can be produced from different types of milk (i.e. cow, buffalo, or goat milk). The sourcing for the milk can produce mozzarella with a stronger or milder taste and/or affect texture/elasticity so what a person is used to eating can significantly affect what they prefer to eat as well. Some things can be considered to be well-received by most people, but I don't think one Italian person's opinion on pizza from a few restaurants in one city of another country should be held with too much authority.

I think the taste of the crust is something often overlooked. I was told that one of the main reasons the NYC is among the best tasting pizzas in the world is that the city water they use which comes from upstate NY. I don't know if that's true or not, but I can say, having tried pizza all over the USA, that NYC pizza is the best by far.
@themoviedealers4 жыл бұрын
That water thing IMHO is a myth. The most important part is cooking at higher temperatures for a shorter period of time. If you go to some pizza chain restaurant, they'll cook it at 500 degrees for 10 minutes. New York places sometimes do 900 degrees for 90 seconds.
