I am Italian and I was raised with the concept of bella figura, which means to always show at your best! I generally follow this rule: I wear and buy very basic clothes together with original (sometimes vintage second hand or handmade) unique accessories such as shoes/glasses/earrings/bracelets/bags/hats. I always add my perfume and that's all I think : )

Lol you sound like my daughter when she speaks Italian! One thing I noticed in my 21 years in the states is that I get the comment “why are you so dressed up “ and I’m only wearing jeans and a shirt, but my mother inspected our clothes for stains, holes and wrinkles and that was part of the “bella figura” so wearing simple basics in great shape is one of my Italian secrets, also less is more, meaning pieces that are timeless and flattering not fussy and frilly. This video brought a big smile to my face thank you beautiful!

That happens to me as well. My Italian mother and nonno -who was a tailor and lived with us- would make sure we looked decent before leaving the house. I get a little tired of people insinuating that I' 'dressing up' to make them look bad! That just motivates me to dress up even more :).

I'm Italian, I live abroad since 15 years, but I'm there 3 or 4 times a year. I love your videos, because you bring the warm confidence and the personal touch that is an important part of Italy. This said, I think that in Italy there is a lot of pressure on women that really, really need to be always looking good and put together, this brings a lot of insecurities too. More over, it can also be very expensive, because your hair, your eyebrows, your clothes, your make up, your body shape, your skin, must be perfect. There is less a culture of second hand shops in Italy (even though it's improving), but at the market and at outlets you can find good things at a low price. I love that you always talk about being confident with your body and your personality and the impact that this can have on your personal style, because that's really the key. One Italian thing that any one can enjoy is quality over quantity (this goes for style, but also for food), enjoying some small breaks with a nice coffee or a good wine and being nice, even to the people your meet only once (a "please" and a "thank you" for the waiters, a little smile while saying "good morning"...you don't need to become besties, just be polite and remember that every one has a life that could be challenging from time to time)...maybe this is always the case in Canada, but here in Germany is not like that, so I bring this kindness with me.
@schneeroseful

Canadians are super friendly, it even became an Internet joke. Germans aloof and polite. They are more sparse with words, they rather show kindness in actions than in everyday small talk.

Thank you An G, I too love the confident Italian aesthetic but appreciate that you mention the pressure and expense put on women and girls to maintain this facade of perfection. My late and incredibly stylish Italian mother drilled into us the BELLA FIGURA philosophy, so I always try to look my best. Even if I'm just taking a walk, on a zoom call or running errands, I always want to feel 'bella'. I live in NYC which so many people equate with style, but is now the capital of frump, so I really hope people start to wear real clothing again as we come out of lockdowns.

In hot summer weather we Italian ladies try to stick to natural textile fibers like cotton, linen, silk. They keep our bodies cooler since they transpire better. Yes, they are more expensive, but better buy less pieces of a higher quality.

My grandfather was Italian-American, and he always called fare bella figura, “Lookin’ sharp”. He was mainly a carpenter by trade, but when he went anywhere not work related, he always wore a collared polo shirt, slacks, leather loafers and a matching belt. He had a thick mane of silver hair he’d comb up, for extra fullness, and he always wore cologne. He had swagger. Getting a “Ya look sharp, kid” from him was always the absolute pinnacle of style compliments for me. Without being able to describe any elements, my best outfits are the ones where I look in the mirror and think, “ya look sharp, kid”.

Definitely coming to this a little late, but I keep finding your videos. I currently live in Italy (lucky me!!!) and one of many goals is to figure out the style! People seem so obsessed with French, but that one is easy. Italian is way more fun and way more challenging! In bella Napoli, I see lots of black, especially relaxed suits, with pristine white sneakers, but as soon as I get to Rome I see bright monochromatic suits of every color of the rainbow with stilettos, and it just gets more eccentric from there! But the number one: their hair and makeup is always done, the sunglasses are fabulous, and if they wear glasses, they are fabulous, too, and they don’t shy away from jewelry. And black eyeliner.

Ahahah ahah... As italian I am feeling as I were on Discovery Channel😂 Thank you Alyssa, I never took occasion of finding out my cultural way of dressing. It is always difficult to generalize, but you took some interesting aspects. I think we use a lot of colors, crazy patterns, different textures, elegant statement pieces, unique artisanal bags and accessories. Quality shoes make a big difference together with hair styling. I am proud of all I wear. Not for vanity, but to feel really myself, always. Being put together is not just a way of expressing myself but also a way of creating a good mood with the others.. If you are waiting for guests, don't you want to let them feel good..? From the big town to the little village, you will find style and confident woman with beautiful make up that makes them bright. Even for a mountain trekking holiday I organize the color match(clothing and rucksack😁) The reality is that WE LOVE BEAUTY. We breath, eat, watch, live beauty. I wish you all the same!!! Greetings from the sun country! 😃

Esatto! I feel the same way, although I lived in different countries, my "italianità" followed me around like a faithful shadow. This is an intrinsic part of my genetic makeup. I believe Italians are born with a schematic already filled with notions of beauty, style, proportion and enjoyment. It just comes natural and easy to envision what looks good. I believe the beauty, symmetry and timelessness of the Renaissance's principles still play a role in Italian "modo di essere". I live in the States and, no matter how casual my life could be, if I walk my dog or do gardening, I have to be put together for "amor proprio", love of one's self.

K, italian here from Rome, or I should say half Italian/half swiss, and I completely understand what you mean. I actually learned many stilish tips from my nonna because as my mum, being swiss, never put that much interest in clothing, but not my nonna. She even used to have dresses made for us by a seamstress 😊 and it's really something I want to learn to do in the future, so that I can create my own clothing.

Don’t wear cheap quality clothes. Buy less but items that are well made. A classic item with great quality is way more flattering that a cheaply made item that is trendy. Unfortunately our shopping malls are filled with low quality clothing stores that a cheaply made. They are affordable and people buy them to follow the latest trend. That is not the case in most places in the world.. Italy, France....

Yeah fast fashion is taking over here too. Even second hand shops, and there are very few of those, are full of garbage clothes from HnM, zara and such. So sad cause I watch americans thrift shopping un yt and they find gorgeous vintage pieces, while I can only find fast fashion polyester trash.

Let’s not forget that certain jobs require you to wear a certain style while paying you minimum wage, these fast fashion places do have basics that are affordable. They have much room to improve but let’s not totally vilify them. Many people don’t have the time or eye to go through the pounds of clothes in a thrift store.

In another one of your videos, you talked about adjectives you/we might use to describe our personal style--to me, yours is always "elegant", no matter how casual or dressed up. It must be how la bella figura finds its way into your style--always an inspiration!

Alyssa, loved this video. Fare la Bella figura indeed. You mention how wearing clothing that makes you feel confident affects how you see yourself and how the world sees you. Yes! Enclothed cognition (Adam & Galinsky, 2012).

Hi Alyssa, I've been following you for a long time and I love your videos, especially the ones about shopping your closet! I'm Italian and I found this video interesting. I agree on some points, such as the one about dressing in a way that enhances one's physical assets that many Italian women have in common. Making a "bella figura", however, is more a form of respect toward yourself and others and a form of personal dignity and not necessarily a manifestation of self-confidence. In general, in Italy (especially in Northern Italy) many women have a style that, curiously enough, coincides with the concept of "French chic", even if it is a style that abroad is rather attributed to French women, i.e. it's more classic/minimalist. Anyway, a beautiful video like all your videos! Big hugs

ah thank you so much for touching on this! I should have gone into more detail about bella figura as pride of self and place and as you said, respect for yourself and others. Thank you so much for sharing this, as well as the different styles through Italy! I so appreciate this! Big hugs back! xx

Come italiana 🇮🇹...

My mother is 86 years old...to this day she cares about 'la bella figura'-always gets dressed up in the morning, puts on makeup, and has an elegant, classic style. She also still mindful of her posture--a sure sign of confidence and elegance! And she loves her sunnies! Thank you for this video--a reminder to me, especially in this pandemic, that we still need to be intentional in our dress (when we actually get dressed!! :) Hai fatto benissimo!

CIAO Alyssa! Me gusto tu consejo de: "dare to style your closet wardrobes without hesitate" yesterday's Sunday, we went to breakfast Wile wearing a "very Mexican top" (those hand made embroider with colorful flowers) and I got plenty of compliments, also that yesterday a wildfire turn grey our sky, and we need colors in our days. Love your video and the style advise to learn to dare, specially with the oversize shirts. Have a pleasant week! CIAO! Besos!

This isn't just Italian perspective it's also an American thing based on a time period here in the States. My grandparents were depression era and had respect for themselves and their belongings growing up with very little. That translated into adults that had a bit more formality as well as beautiful clothing that they took care of. My grandparents and my parents never stepped out of the house without looking their best regardless of income level. This has been passed on to me and to my kid. My husband had a similar upbringing and is very much the same. While it might be more commonplace in Italy they're just as many people here who have the same mindset. It's a respect for self and for others around you. The respect for yourself can't be taken away by someone else. We just get lost in the sea of social norms where lack of respect for self and others has become commonplace.
