As a Jays fan, I am happy Teo resigned with LA. He is a class act on and off the field and deserves to be happy and successful. My Jays have not been the same since Atkins traded him away for a defence first team. The Jays will not be successful while Ross Atkins and Mark Schapiro run the team. Vladdy and Bo will be traded or walk away too. The dismantling of a once young playoff contending team will then be complete by Ross Atkins, the worst GM in MLB. I hope he is fired before spring training, or at least before the rebuild begins so he doesn't decide Vladdy and Bo's fate.

Happy to see my Christmas present, a WS patch Teo jersey, didn't go to waste yay He might genuinely be my favorite player on the roster. Wants to be here, doesn't have an ego, all-around good guy, loved in the locker room and by fans. And most importantly the dude can ball; he was the first Dodger to win the home run derby. Having that sure hitter to keep the guys in front of him moving turned out to be huge, especially in the playoffs. Clutch, too. The one play that'll always stick out in my mind was the grand slam down 1-6 to the Padres in game 3, after the team looked dead in the water. Stories came out about how he became a vocal leader during the series and that play gave the team enough juice to put SD away.

I don't understand the hate for deferrals--other than it just being jealousy. The money has to be placed into an escrow account for the player within 1 1/2 years of the season in which it was earned. The team ultimately pays it up front, and it sits in an account earning interest until the agreed up payment date. Neither the team or player can touch it, and the teams pay less (present day value), while the player earns more (present day value + interest). Every. Team. Should. Be. Doing. This. The CBA (page 89) states there's no limit to deferrals, and the argument that it acts like a credit account for the team, where they can put off payment is just...wrong. The escrow accounts would transfer with ownership if the team is sold, so the argument that it puts a burden on future owners is also just...wrong. Maybe it's time to hold the teams pocketing the revenue sharing money accountable, instead of bitching about the teams willing to put their revenues back into the team.
@TruthPrevails893 күн бұрын
Finally someone with a brain posting on this. 99% of the fans are buffoons. You’re in the 1%.
@4lyeskas3 күн бұрын
Yeah, a bizarre % of fans seem to think deferrals are some "kick the can down the road" thing where the team is just magically hoping they find money in 10 years to start paying players. No, it's still money the team has to have now, just slightly less. The interest will make up the rest, and in fact teams can even take any profit over the mandated amount for the player. It's also something the player themselves has to agree to - LA isn't forcing anyone into these contracts. The deferrals get blown out of proportion due to Ohtani's historic contract terms but everyone else's contracts are pretty par for the course.
@huckstaunfiltered82003 күн бұрын
@spdodger I disagree with deferring contacts..!!! There should be a salary cap, none of this bs luxury tax nonsense either...!! Say 200 million per team, anything spent over that, then said teams are disqualified from making the post season for not only the current year, but the following year as well..!! (Call it a penalty, if you wish)... But only this, will allow small market teams from actually being able to compete..!!! Does the NFL have a salary cap..?? That league is flourishing. Look at the Japanese ratings during the World Series, now look at the U.S.A ratings... Your cash cow Ohtani (The Gambler) and his deferred contract.. I have no horse in this race, however baseball was better when there was more than 6 teams who actually had a legit shot at winning a title... Now it's a joke, like the NBA...
@Hatoreus3 күн бұрын
@@4lyeskas Lying bullshit. The money they don't have to pay in taxes itself effectively increases the value of the contract by at least 40% or more.

@@huckstaunfiltered8200”no horse in the race” but you baselessly call Ohtani a gambler. Lmao. Baseball needs a salary cap. It’s the least interesting and least competitive league in all the major sports. How can small market teams even try to compete in the market for star players?
@Hatoreus3 күн бұрын
Exactly, the only thing saving the league is roster space at this point. These dodger fans will tell you every team can do it, but they won't tell you that only a few markets have the necessary conditions for players to want to do it. High state income tax + huge market = players willing to defer, they not only skip on taxes, but also earn interest on the deferred money. Never mind that the large market inherently lends itself to better teams because of better free agent signings, and thus higher chance at a WS ring.

The Dodgers won the world series and seem like they will be a much better team next season. They are a super team at this point, which isn't good for the game. Small and mid market teams need to be competitive to keep fans interested. I'm pretty close to giving up on baseball if Sasaki signs with them. MLB needs to step in at some point and restore some competitive balance if they want to remain relevant at all.
