Diaz is by far not the 2nd worse ump in the league. That honor should go to CB Buckner now that cowboy Joe has retired. Diaz may not be the best, but he doesn't have a quick hook. He allows players and managers alike to argue, unlike others that will immediately toss you for arguing balls and strikes.

As an umpire I think having bonuses or whatever for good work is a good idea. I also think it would be cool if mlb brought some of the pitch tracking technology to college and high school, not only for pitchers but also umpires. If MLB could grab umpires who are good at those levels for the minors it would work better than going to a camp because the minors is on the field action, and ex umpires can help train newbies in the low levels of the minors

Most of the pitches he got wrong were on the outside corner, which are very hittable balls and he was pretty consistent. I was an umpire for 50 years and like to think I can be objective. He may be in the top ten worst but I believe as an overall umpire, not just balls and strikes, Angel is worst, then I would put in CB Bucknor, Ron Kulpa and Phil Cuzzi in order.

For the young kids watching this video, know the K zone is just an arbitrary box put up by the tv channels and isn’t supposed to have any relevance in calling balls and strikes. Even if the umpire is calling stuff that is completely wrong, it’s his judgement and it’s better just to focus on looking for your pitch to drive.

A lot of those strikes could have gone either way. Umpiring is extremely stressful, and takes both physical and mental stamina to maintain a cool head and place yourself in the right frame of mind to really be good at it. You must always concentrate, and pau attention to the pitcher, the better, and what's going on along the basepaths. Angel Hernande and this guy are both petty bad because they aren't mentally cut out for that type of job.

I agree with everything you said except for that some umpires aren't mentally cut out for the job. Yea a lot of people in here will disagree but being behind the dish is HARD especially at a high level. Now a game like Livan Hernandez’s 15 Ks with Eric Gregg calling it was egregious…..

Players, coaches and managers ultimately get "let go" when they do not perform at a certain level. It should be the same for umpires. If their numbers fall below a certain level, they need to be released or sent down to the minors to work on their performance. Pay the top performing umpires certain performance bonuses and incentives. There is likely several minor league "hot shot" umpires that can do better right now than many older MLB umpires who refuse to retire!

Having an ego issue is pretty common of people that feel that they're in a position of authority....and that needs to change, once someone displays their ego and it's affecting others negatively they should be immediately put in their place and at the very least dropped down the totem pole, but realistically they should be outright replaced by someone that's willing to evaluate themselves...it's a widespread problem with people that feel that they're in a position of authority and it causes way too many problems, from elementary schools to the top of the govt, everyone should be held accountable for their mistakes and behavior

I believe the technology is now available for balls and strikes to be taken away from the HP umpire. Keep an umpire there for all of the other reasons, play at the plate, foul balls, HBP, etc, but take the balls and strikes away from them. I’m aware that this could only be done on the MLB level but there’s to much riding on all the games, peoples lively hoods, careers ending and many other issues are at stake….. Full disclosure: I umpired for a number of years myself so I have an idea about what goes on with umpires…..
