I was in a community college back in 1989, and in my history class was a boy from Sierra Leone. His whole village had pooled money to send him to our little college so he could get a degree in teaching to come back and be a teacher in his own village. He was living with a pastor of a local Seventh Day Adventist church, and he and I got put together for a project. I learned so much! Sadly he didn't get to finish his 4 year degree, his parents passed away and he had to go back home to care for his siblings. I often wondered what became of him.

In 1967, a friend of mine served in Koidu as a Peace Corps Volunteer. His task was introducing new rice varieties and fertilizers to the area. He was personally devastated when people dug up his demonstration plots in search of diamonds. Those roads have not changed one bit in the last 55 years. Noraly is one helluva cyclist.

I was born and raised in Sierra Leone (Lebanese), and I have witnessed the bloody war in 1991 which was terrifying. I still remember the sound of the gun shots and God saved my life at one point where was running for my life an RPG rocket was aimed at my escape root where I flew up almost two meters from the ground by the impact of the explosion and fell down to the ground, thanks to God the wall barrier was between me and the rocket grenade it was a nightmare. Watching this video brough me back good and bad memories. I wish Sierra Leone and Sierra Leoneans the best that life can offer and most importantly peace within the beautiful people of Sierra Leone. It was the same in America before there was social media! I live in a city called Port royal, South Carolina. Back in the day, all of the rich people all over the world, had a little 5 to 11 year olds shucking their oysters for them, they were sent. This picture of the little children of Irish heritage no doubt? Definitely looked like it! We’re standing in the freezing cold water in boots of leather all tore up in mud. Their little fingers/hands disfigured from oyster knives. The exceptionally wealthy have done this forever. It’s just after around the late 40s word-of-mouth was traveling too fast for them to keep up with these escapades in America.

The sad truth is that it´s often the western world that has fuel these tragic events..... One man's loss is another man's gain.... What (mostly) the western world has done to Africa is beyond sad. Slaves, diamonds etc..... But things are going in a better direction now. Africa has started to negotiate lots of stuff when it comes to trading etc as a whole continent now instead of as separate small countries. They have realised that Africa must save Africa. The western world that has ripped them of freedom, money, minerals etc for hundreds of years won´t never help Africa. They rather trade with China and other countries that actually help them and pay for stuff. So hopefully things will be better from rather recently.....

I was in Sierra Leone 1973/4 (2 holidays) we stayed on Lumley Beach Freetown.Met a Lebanese guy who was nice to us but did try to sell us diamonds.The hotel manager told us that he would sell the Diamonds to us then inform the customs at the airport that we had them,they would find them and take everything of value from us and return the diamo ds to him to sell again.

Noraly you just have a special way with teaching that makes me hang on every word. Many things that interest you and that you comment on along your way is same as I would do. Like stopping, listening to jungle sounds and commenting how amazing it is. So glad to see Alaska is still going. I recently picked up my 23 300 Rally. Such an impressive machine in every way. It was a very cool (not literally😂) ride today and the history of the diamond trade and mining is unreal. I had heard about the blood wars but not as much detail as you provided.
