I'm curious to know what are your feelings regarding the influx of western backpackers into Cambodia? I've noticed a massive increase in social content in Cambodia, Sadly coming from tourist and not travelers. (I hope you understand the distinction of what I mean) It would be a shame to watch Cambodia or Laos given their history to end up like parts of Thailand etc...

Those 7 eleven’s are the franchise from Thailand, that’s why you see most are Thai products,but Cambodian government requires those 7 eleven’s to sell Cambodian products for a certain minimum percentage. Every time I visit Cambodia I don’t buy Thai products. I buy Cambodian products.

And also pointed out that the Khmer Empire was big and the influence they had around Southeast Asia. Fact Check: Khmer Civilization has existed before the Thais came in the area since the 13th century from Southern China, Yunnan area. Now they're claiming they're are Mon Dvaravati group with bogus made up stuff. Anyways ... Haha, you forgot to check the ointment section in 7 Eleven, lol ... there are like Cambodian brand oils and balms, like Naga Balm, the one the Cambodian monk, Bodhi leaf brand ointment. Convenience and consistency are the key marketing words for the 7Eleven success. 'Oh okay then, toasted cheese sandwich is right up there! As the stores are closing down over in the States, they surly are the fastest growing mini marts in SE Asia. I don't believe the local customers give a rat's about where the product is made. It's all about the price. My main worry is school children and the mountains of sugar drinks they consume. I've never seen so many obese kids before here in Thailand.
@nv96148 күн бұрын
Ryan, good video. But i would like to point out one thing, these 7 eleven are not owned by Thailand. Each store is set up by individual or legal Cambodian entities that bought the franchise rights. CP may have bought the franchise rights from Thailand but they are in a way sub-franchising this to local Cambodian businessmen and women. The franchise fee is USD300k. Anyone can set this one up, just pay USD300k one time fee + some share of profit annually. There's truth to the lack of KH produce. We have to work on that.
@itchyfeetonthecheap7 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment and explanation. While making this video I realized that it's a bit silly, especially these days with all the multi-national companies, to state that a company is Thai/Cambodian/Japanese etc. Too bad we can't get a breakdown of where a dollar spent at 7-Eleven goes - what percentage stays in Cambodia.

Your fear that 7-11 will take over Cambodia is unfounded. Don't underestimate local mom and pop stores. Their stores don't have air-con, don't hire employees, so they can survive easily. Even in Thailand where 7-11 is practically everywhere (about 14,000 stores), there are more than 50,000 local mom and pop stores as well. BTW, Tesco-Lotus is rebranded simply as Lotus' due to the fact that CP bought entire stake from Tesco. When Thailand faced Tom Yam Kung financial meltdown 25 years ago, CP sold majority stake in Lotus to Tesco and the hypermart store was rebranded to Tesco-Lotus. Now, CP bought the shares back as Tesco retreated from overseas operation, the name Tesco was dropped.

Extremely interesting video. I was fascinated by the low down as to who owns and controls the various convenience stores in Cambodia. I've lived here for quite a while now but still don't speak the language and don't interact with the locals too much. I remember when PTT gas stations started popping up all over the place and set the standard for clean service station toilets thus gaining popularity on the main traffic arteries. They all had the Amazon coffee shops, where a coffee would cost half a days salary!!! Then they were all changed from Jiffy iirc to 7/11's which I think accounts for the large number of outlets increasing so rapidly. However, over the last year or so a lot have indeed sprung up as isolated stores not attached to a gas station. I thought Lucky was 100% Cambodian. Chip mong supermarket in Sen Sok is hellishly expensive imo and finally I was shocked by your pronounciation of the word Aeon. 'Ae' is like 'ee' in sheep! Not a criticism just expressing my shock and why. Fantastic video I am subscribed already on another YT account but wll subscribe on this one too so as not to miss the highly anticipated update.

I do miss the old kiwi marts but I do think 711 is better than the mini big cs. When they get the big big cs that will be a game changer. Yes I am sure it has pushed out some of the carts but I would imagine Cambodia collects more tax money from 711. My biggest sadness is especially in Phnom Penh is the tearing down of old historic neighborhoods and putting up generic high rises. You see it in the local markets as the central market and others arent as busy as they once were as some have either moved to the malls or closed up shop.

Just look at the last election. Why would you say it’s stupid when -in fact, the scenario isn’t the Thai fault at all. Cambodia are stealing not just the Thai evolved development culture authentication parts or trademark but the copy rights in television-new media drama production, songs, etc down to food and recipes. Now if the Cambodia were to follow or borrow the Thai trends, food, culture tradition during their transition without saying they are the original creator it wouldn’t have been so bad because even many English pubs sell Thai green curry. On the contrary, Cambodia do the opposite in making big nonsense commotion and = So No country would be happy with this. There is branding, product protection, copy rights, regulations on registration in global productivity through out human societies for a reason. 😮
