The word "discrimination" is just for the Western World. In Cambodia, they are called "teasing". Teasing is the way the adult makes fun of the youngster in the way of education, to make them strong, or the way of recognition. For instance; the tran-kid. They tease them but not to make them upset. If the kid felt uncomfortable, they said, don't be shy and stop teasing. For him to call a bus or taxi stop to pick up their customer a discrimination is totally wrong. Usually, the bus or taxi knew their customers. If they didn't see them, they may decide to wait for them to come for a certain time. For sellers, calling him is just a courtesy of knowing their potential customer.

Thanks for really good information! I hate rats but I personally encounter them more frequently in Vietnam than I do Cambodia. I also notice all over Asia that I seem to get priority service. It may be partially because I am a senior. In Singapore riding the subway, I frequently had younger riders offer me their seats. It is refreshing just to see such a positive and respectful attitude towards older people.

Cambodia is so very special and I think you did well to walk the line of sharing some irritations alongside what makes the place special. I lived in Cambodia for about 2 years and I deeply miss it. All the topics you both covered are relevent, some may be more relevant to somone than others but all are true but none should be a deterrant from moving/ visiting Cambodia for an extended stay. One thing I noticed and loved about Cambodia is the size of the 20-30 year old generation. There are soooo many hard working young people it gives the cities and countryside a fun and vibrant tone. Sometimes I would play local music, maybe Vannda, and within a minute I would have some young local coming over to me excited I liked their music and sometimes a crowd would for and they would dance...Well done on the video gents!

For bugs: I have used permethrin since I was in the Army over 30 years ago. It’s synthetic chrysanthemum extract. I spray it on clothing, door sills, bags, hotel beds, shoes, window screens, furniture, any area or item I want most (not all) bugs to avoid or be exterminated. I know it kills tics on contact. Anecdotally, I’ve used it to curb ant entry paths, and it’s the best I’ve ever used for mosquito repellent. It’s sold in sprays and creams. The spray usually has a warning not to spray skin, but I’ve done it with no ill effects. However, if you just want to spray clothing, that will likely do the job, and it lasts through several washes. It’s not harmful to humans or dogs, but smaller pets may have different reactions.

Enjoyed hearing what a non-tropical person living in the city reacts to. Coming from tropical Australia, having lived in rural Indonesia for many years (so I'm used to being 'different') and now in a small Cambodian town far from the capital , I notice some of the same things but they land differently. The insects- 5% as annoying as at 'home' or in Indonesia, where I got dengue. Yep, that's nasty Stairs- Uneven and slippery no handrails- yes indeed!. I also dislike the slippery shiny tile floors almost everywhere. Walkable- I'd love to walk more but I don't trust the street dogs, can't bear being barked at, so I tend to ride my motorbike. Heat/humidity- yep, even for me, many months of the year are toooo much. The only place I've ever had heat rash. Road quality wasn't mentioned much, but where I live is undergoing ongoing of whatever on earth they're doing to the streets.. potholes/puddles, ruts, slippery gravel/clay. Cross fingers it'll be fixed in -maybe a few years? Outside of town, roads can become dirt/ mud quickly. Noise- Temples, extreme sound systems at funerals/weddings that go on for days, can really grate/need earplugs but overall I enjoy the rhythms and sound of Cambodian music and the soundscape. One of the joys of living here for me :) One thing not mentioned is the cost of bringing in overseas currency. My Cambodian bank charges a hefty fee per foreign deposits and my money transfer company charges much more for sending to than than other countries/ATM withdrawal. It adds up. Another is health care. Self medication is easy cos you can buy so much over the counter but the quality may be questionable due to fakery and 'dumping'. Even locals go to Bangkok for serious stuff- not easy if you're seriously ill or broken or, like me, don't have family/very close friends to administer my life if things go wrong. Quality ealth insurance is essential, and has to be factored into living costs. But overall, the friendliness, helpfulness and honesty of the Cambodian people I encounter, especially in my town, makes up for any of these small annoyances.

Funny, the complaints are basically the same wherever you go, when I moved to Arizona from the Bay area besides the triple-digit heat. In Phoenix, it was the cockroaches and in Mesa it was the scorpions and the rattlesnakes. You haven't lived until you step in the shower and there's a white scorpion sitting there waiting for you, and the herds of havelina that walk the streets like they own them were just a joy. So wherever you go, you'll have pet peeves. When it comes to pests, though there's probably nothing worse than X-pats 😋

Here in Cambodia I have a few ants. It’s not overwhelming. The cleaner it is the better. I put a lot of things in the fridge or freezer that are meant to be stored in cabinets. Such as bread, cereal, or breath mints, etc. I use dish soap suds in their tracks and they usually vanish for a few weeks. I’m not a fan of spraying chemicals. I’ve seen a few rats (rare) in open-air restaurant floors but usually only during sunrise in the very early mornings, but still very very rare. I don’t think I’ve seen one cockroach in over a year in Cambodia except in the darkest alleys behind a restaurant I seen very very few, thank god. The mosquitoes were only a problem at the residence for two months in the height of rain season, about 5 mosquito bites per day, mostly when sleeping. since then when it’s not raining, basically zero inside or outside. ….But when I was in the Philippines, even in a spotless high end condo, there were roaches all over the condo units (multiple different condos) everywhere all sizes. They are from the neighbors. I take trash out everyday, and do dishes sweeping floor daily but still there. In the shared hallways of these condos there were rats running up and down the hallway by the elevator. The fire exit stairs had multiple piles of rat droppings the size of a box of spilled cereal. It never made sense to me for such a high end place, and I was cleaning everyday. It was worse when I rented a house in metro Manila. I couldn’t sleep. The flying roaches in my bedroom at 2AM, no thank you! That was in the Philippines, not Cambodia. I find Cambodia MUCH MUCH MUCH more clean than the Philippines and I’ve seen 99% fewer rats and roaches here in Cambodia. It’s all about community cleanliness for sure, and basic education and awareness about what causes it to become a problem. Hint hint, the garbage.

I was surprised to see posters saying "no to child trafficking" and "beware of p*dophiles". I haven't seen that in all the SE Asian countries that I've visited, so that was disconcerting. Overall, between SR & PP, I would choose SR if I was a digital nomad or retiree, since it's more provincial. If I needed to earn a living (ex. Teach English or work for a MNC), then I'd choose PP.

The second part of that is the amount of plastic trash on the road side and in the waterways. I did see wheelie bins being used for trash collection now. I think this will help to keep dogs from ripping the bags open searching for food which in turn will reduce the prevalence of rats also.

Enjoyed the video, always interesting to hear thoughts of non locals settled in a foreign country. Im from UK but lived in SE Asia most of my adult life since Uni as my first job was in HK. The last 25 years have been mostly Hong Kong based but work postings included 3 in the Bangkok office and 2 in Singapore. I love it here in HK but its generally an expensive place to live once you retire so I'm going to be moving to Penang next year. Without writing a whole essay on the reasons, it just ticks a lot of the boxes for me personally, infrastructure, housing, medical & dental, safety, English language usage, visas etc etc. Its very much a modern clean 1st world country but with developing country prices. I also looked at Thailand and Bali as possible options, both have a lot of appeal. The Philippines is just not my cup of tea. Cambodia I've only ever been to for brief holidays and a wedding once. I really enjoyed the trips, great food, lovely locals and the heritage side is obviously Incredible. My gf ( now my ex missus😂) loved it. However its not somewhere I could ever see myself retiring to. Just too third world for me as it is now, the poverty, the garbage and the air /noise pollution a bit too in your face. Also if I was still married and moving as a couple I might feel differently about this aspect, and as unfairly as it obviously is to stigmatize all older white single guys that choose to retire there, I'm sure most for totally legitimate reasons, that stigma does put me off personally. If I'm on the beach in Penang and I see a middle aged white guy playing in the waves with a Malay kid im automatically assuming that it's his step kid or the child of his wife's family or something. I see that same scene on a beach in Sihanoukville - as we did actually - and we're thinking we should be altering the authorities or something, we were certainly concerned. Its unfortunate that everyone gets tarred with the same brush but honestly seeing old white single scruffy looking guys hanging around certain areas in Phnom Penh just gave me the ick.

been here for 15 years now and I have always rented completely unfurnished apartments or houses. I moved a year ago after being in the place for 7 years and I thought 1 truck would be enough as everything was boxed nicely but it still took 2 truck loads to do. Also, surprised you covered the use of horns while driving but not the driving ability of most people.

@@seramer8752 we stayed in PP but moved to the edge of the city. I moved as the children were 9 and they now both have bikes, go to their friends houses, go fishing in the many ponds around here that form where empty plots are and go to the exercise area on the borey next to us. It's quieter, more open and if we need to go into the city its only a 20 min drive. Also I got a small 2 bed house for the same price as my 1st floor apartment. I have never rented furnished places as I knew from very early on that the most cost effective strategy would be to go unfurnished as it pays for itself in the long run. Living here and staying here are not the same thing.

One thing I miss about living in the U.S. is the ease of shopping. If there was something that I wanted to buy, there were easily a dozen places I could go to get it. If not, there was always Amazon. I've been searching high and low for a heat pen for mosquito bites for weeks without any luck. Back in the States, I could go to Target, Walmart, maybe even Walgreens and they would just be sitting there on the shelf. If not, I could find on on Amazon, and with any luck, have it in my hands the next day. Even something as ubiquitous as 70% Isopropyl alcohol is impossible to find in Siem Reap. Maybe I'll have to take a road trip to Phnom Penh to try my luck.

The shedding wings means they were probably termites or ants. They only produce flying forms during the mating and swarming season. The fact that you found lots of wings but few bodies means you have a bunch of fertilized females and their male partners hiding somewhere nearby setting up home. My wife is from Cambodia originally and she is merciless when we see them swarming where we live in the US now.

Very interesting video. I do agree that westerners are discriminated against. For example, whenever my wife and I go to a wedding and take a seat at the typical round table, the place next to me is invariably the last seat to get occupied by another guest. Not a problem but it is noticable that we are viewed differently. Also, after 10 years I'm still not used to the heat and humidity, but I do sweat a lot and that's my problem. Nice video, wlll subscribe!

After 2 months in Cambodia, the biggest turn offs, in no particular order: 1. Piles of burning rubbish, particularly in Kampot 2. Air pollution in Phnom Penh 3. Traffic jams in PP 4. Lack of green space / walkable pavements 5. Poverty / begging -- hard on the heart. The annoyances were largely environmental and socio-economic. The bugs, the heat, the rain, the occasional rip off or toot on the klaxon from drivers . . . meh, not deal breakers.

@@nataliev.149 Good effing luck. It'll never work. Vancouver in 2010 tried that in prep for the Winter Olympics. It backfired, and now poverty and drugs and homelessness and random violence from crack heads is sky high there. The idea of homelessness in America cannot be reconciled with the idea of the so called American dream, so it's ignored. Until the underlying issues that cause poverty and homelessness are acknowledged by the powers that be in the USA, nothing will ever be done. You can sweep things under the rug for only so long before you start tripping on the pile.
