Thank you for showing how to cross a busy street in PhnomPenh. Yes the rule is to move predictably and slowly. Do not make a quick unpredictable change or movement. True for Vietnam Saigon traffic also.

The little red chili paste they usually offer is crazy spicy. I like it, but I've overdone it a few times.

@@itchyfeetonthecheap you and me both. My family laughs at me because if it’s real spicy I’ll get the hiccups but I can’t stop eating the spicy. Saved my life Ryan. Always try to cross the street with a monk, cause the penalty of running down one is life in the slammer. Interesting similarity with the Khmer name for bread. I struggle to find 'Khanom pang' in Chiang Mai that doesn't contain a lot of sugar. The Thai's like their bread sweet, guessing the same in Cambodia!
@itchyfeetonthecheap2 жыл бұрын
It's actually not as bad as I remember it being in Vietnam and China (almost unavoidable). You can get it sweet here, but the majority of it isn't.

Pate is the liver spread, the white meat is called yalour and the pink meat is a ham. The pate sandwich comes from the influence of the French which at one time colonized Cambodia. The added veggies are supposed to be pickled daikon, carrots, and cucumbers or a combination of the three.
@guitrich2 жыл бұрын
Num Pang - Num = cake, Pang = Khmer's pronunciation of the French word "pain" or bread. So it's like "cake bread" which doesn't really make sense in English, but it's what we call "bread" - num pang. You're right, pâté is also another word adapted from the French liver spread, except we use the term for all meat stuffing that goes in the sandwich. The solid whitish meat is kind of like chicken or pork steamed meat loaf (the Vietnamese call them cha lua) and ham like loaf and whatever else meat the seller wants to add. I would eat at that Chinese restaurant too if I was there. That pork dish looked awesome. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@itchyfeetonthecheap2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didn't realize that. I wonder what other borrowed French words they use.

Great video, love the humours…I was in Cambodia this month for the first time and spent 2 weeks there. Love the people, the country, the culture! I don’t know why but it seemed recently lots of videos from China and Taiwan saying how unsafe it is in Cambodia! The videos are saying people are being scammed and getting their organs harvested! WTF? I think it’s propaganda being made to scare tourists from going there! By the way, I tried that instant hotpot when I was in Siem Reap, it’s pretty good. Very popular in China! I liked Cambodia so much now I am thinking about retiring there!
@itchyfeetonthecheap2 жыл бұрын
There are people from China and Taiwan being tricked into working at scam centers. They come for a job and they have their passports taken away and they are forced to call people to try and scam them out of money. But it's no reason not to come to Cambodia, in fact the whole scam operation is headed by Chinese people, not Cambodians.

Just use the pedestrians cross all the time! If they hit you anywhere else than the pedestrian cross, you’re the one at fault. Also everyone is in rush, they dun want you to cut their journey where you shouldn’t be. Just use the pedestrian cross all the time just in case and be careful.
@itchyfeetonthecheap2 жыл бұрын
That makes sense, but still be careful when using the pedestrian crossing because many people ignore it.

G’day Ryan…..just arrived here recently for a long term stay. Question…. Is it mandatory for foreign men here to have a Pony tail hair style. I can’t believe the prevalence of the “Woodstock look”. I’m thinking of moving to Kampot ….but that could be ground zero for the ponytail. Is it a secret society thing , a cult look ….it’s odd. Not many places left with electricity, running water etc that have those guys walking around. They seem nice guys…chilled etc . A couple of them I met are Flat Earth conspirators as well. Kinda like a time warp they’re caught in. I better start growing the hair. 😆
