ITF Taekwon-Do Terminology - Part 1

The video is part of a series on ITF Taekwon-Do terminology for 10th Kup to 1st Kup students, although it is also useful for Black Belt students as well,. But this series doesn't cover the more advanced techniques.
In this video, I show you the English and Korean version for all the terms needed to name any technique used in patterns Chon-Ji Tul to Choong Moo Tul.

Simply amazing, GM! This is really useful as I had to translate firstly from korean to english and the to spanish (an viceversa). Great video. I would really like to see the pragmatic difference between striking, punching, thrusting, etc. Taekwon!

@2:45 Palmok (팔목) is wrist, not forearms. Forearms is ap-pal (앞팔)

Thank you for the information. The Taekwon-Do Encyclopedia translates the Forearm as Palmok so that's the correct terminology for Taekwon-Do students, even if it is not the correct Korean translation. There are probably many other examples of Taekwon-Do terminology in English and Korean which are not exact translations. An example is Sun Makgi translated as W-Shaped Block.

@5:59 . Dear Grand Master Nardizzi. Shouldn't it be "bandae" when you punch over the front leg in front stance? And @6:05 "baro" (=reverse) when you punch over the opposite leg in front stance (Gunnun seogi). Bandae means same side, and baro means opposite side. 🤨🤔

Yop Dollyo Chagi is like Dollyo Chagi but you kick more to the side and still using the Ball of the Foot. Yopcha Jirugi is completely different than Dollyo Chagi and Yop Dollyo Chagi because it moves in a straight line using the footsword. See my video on 'Taekwon-Do Lesson #47 - Turning Kick' for a more detailed explanation.

Charyot Saseong Nim Gae, kyong-ye!!! Kamsahumnida GM Nardizzi! I have had many questions regarding terminology and how it's formed together and how certain kicks used Jirugi and looked like a punch (ie. Side Piercing Kick - Yopcha Jirugi). I didn't realize that Yop chagi forms Yopcha and goes before jirugi. Do you have any more advanced info on why sentence structure is formed in this manner and any rules that go beyond what you've outlined in these 4 videos? It's interesting how it's not Yop jirugi chagi or Ap busigi chagi for example. There seems to be a language rule or exception here and that has been what's thrown me off the most. I know you said you don't speak Korean but are there any more rules or info on exceptions in order to learn the correct order for things like that. Again thanks so much.

Grand master I started a few months ago my first grading from white belt is soon. I can do up to. won hyo,upto one leg in terms of kicks and hand springs in terms on gymnastics. What belt do you i shall be grandmaster. And thank you for the videos they are really helpful

Don't know if this happens in ITF but in WT schools the spinning hook kick is called dwi huryeo chagi,bandae dollyo chagi or momdollyo nacko/huryeo chagi.. in my school we call it momdollyo nacko chagi if we hook or momdollyo huryeo chagi if we do it with the kicking leg straight

I have noticed that WT have very different terminology than ITF for many of the techniques. We only call it Bandae Dollyo Chagi if the leg is straight.

Very nice video sir, could you please explain the difference between Doo and Sang?

I don't know the actual translation for these words as I don'y speak Korean. All I know is that we us 'doo' when the technique is names 'double' and 'sang' when it is named 'twin'.There doesn't seem to be any logical reason why some techniques use the word 'double' instead of 'twin' or vice versa. They both seem to have the same meaning. So we go by the naming used in the TKD encyclopedia.

should we learn and teach the techniques in English or the Korean language?

In my opinion it is ok to teach in English as it is easier for beginners to pick up on what your instructions mean. But it is important for student also know the Korean terminology. I give commands in Korean such as SiJak, Dwiro Dora, etc but I describe the techniques in English and sometimes give the Korean term as well. I insist on students learning the Korean terms by testing them in their grading exam.

@DonatoNardizzi thanks for your reply, I have learnt all the words in English from the beginning up to 5th Dan in ITF, I didn't see anyone teaching in english also on the internet. I think one of the differences between wt and ITF should be this. Therefore, ITF is international and should be taught in English then.

Well it depends which country. The English terminology was approved by General Choi as it used in the English version of the Taekwon-Do Encyclopedia. Some countries do not have an Encyclopedia in their language and it makes sense to use Korean terminology instead. Korean terminology should be considered the main Taekwon-Do language as it originated from Korea. But I don't see why it cannot be taught in English, especially in English speaking countries.

ITF taekwondo has a 9th degree black belt? I thought the highest is 7th degree

The highest grade in ITF Taekwon-Do is 9th Degree. 7th and 8th Degrees are called Masters and 9th Degrees are Grand Masters,

Depends on which of the schools of TKD. I practice under the school that Master Kwan established and that one only has until 5th degree.
