I read into rock and sand written by beloved arch priest Fr Josiah Trenham. The biggest eye opener was when Protestant reformers like Zwingli and Martin Luther claimed to have read from the same sources St Augustine yet came to completely different conclusions on the sacramental nature of the church. We are lead to believe they where the correct Christians yet they couldn’t agree on the nature of worship claiming the same written sources. The anabaptists where so off calling the Eucharist not the blood and body of Christ Martin Luther said he’d rather take communion with Rome. I used to be a Protestant and I thank God I’m not anymore.

It seems like pride is blocking them from being fully cognizant of this dilemma in their thinking -- "Clearly MY interpretation is correct!" Why would Jesus create a text which we would endlessly debate over? He didn't. He created an authority for us to follow. The problem is people don't want to submit. A strange and sad dynamic.

'Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood...'' Two very specific nouns and very specific actions. Idk what protestants would have wanted Jesus to say instead. ''Consume and digest my body tissue and drink my plasma and red blood cells''. Also, how is it not possible, as protestants say, for Jesus to have sacrificed for our sins once on the cross, and then for us to recieve that eternal sacrifice, through eating the very physical and divine body that was sacrificed, for eternity? God breaks through time, and humanly brings us the sacrifice he has made in flesh. And for the people that say they can't see or taste the blood. Does the blood need to be made of blood components, atom by atom, for it to be the actual blood of Jesus? Do you prioritize your senses or a microscope, over the word of Jesus? Can't you take the blood as literal, if it is made blood by divine intervention instead of some weird chemical reaction? The priest works through the divine, not with chemistry. I love you protestants, as I love my grandmother who is also one. Please come to Orthodoxy.

The only point in the entire gospels where a significant portion of Jesus’s disciples permanently abandon him is over exactly this issue. John 6:60 his disciples after hearing they need to eat Jesus’s flesh and blood to inherit eternal life said this is a hard teaching and many of them could not accept it. If there’s no real presence in the Eucharist this story in scripture makes no sense. As a rule of thumb if you have a theological view that is irreconcilable with a portion of scripture it’s probably your view that is wrong. The Bible is a coherent narrative when properly understood.

The moment you press most protestants on the confessional Lutheran churches it's like they short circuit and say real presence Lutheran: secondary issue, real presence Orthodox: blasphemy

Yep. And here are a few writings from the early church: Ignatius of Antioch (A.D. 110): "They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in his goodness, raised up again" (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2, 7:1). Justin Martyr (A.D. 150): "Not as common bread or common drink do we receive these; but since Jesus Christ our Savior was made incarnate by the word of God and had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so too, as we have been taught, the food which has been made into the Eucharist by the Eucharistic prayer set down by him, and by the change of which our blood and flesh is nourished, . . . is both the flesh and the blood of that incarnated Jesus" (First Apology 66:1-20). Origen (A.D. 244): "You are accustomed to take part in the divine mysteries, so you know how, when you have received the Body of the Lord, you reverently exercise every care lest a particle of it fall and lest anything of the consecrated gift perish" (Homilies on Exodus 13:3). Cyril of Jerusalem (A.D. 350): "Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine as simply that, for they are, according to the Master’s declaration, the body and blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm" (Catechetical Discourses: Mystagogic 4:22:9). Theodore of Mopsuestia (A.D. 400): "When [Christ] gave the bread he did not say, ‘This is the symbol of my body,’ but, ‘This is my body.’ In the same way, when he gave the cup of his blood he did not say, ‘This is the symbol of my blood,’ but, ‘This is my blood,’ for he wanted us to look upon the [Eucharistic elements], after their reception of grace and the coming of the Holy Spirit, not according to their nature, but to receive them as they are, the body and blood of our Lord" (Catechetical Homilies 5:1). Be Catholic.

When you're a Protestant who believes in the real presence, respects and defers to the Church fathers (unless they directly contradict the reason and logic of scripture, ie Origen), and prefers liturgical worship; but you don't want to pray to anyone but God, don't want to venerate icons, or believe that the "Most Holy Theotokos [can] save us.'" So, you're considered anathema and are barred from being in a relationship with God 😕(according to the Eastern Orthodox Church).

So true. My exact struggle right now. The Apocrypha being held as sacred by the Orthodox church is also crazy seeing as it's not referenced anywhere else in the Bible and it's not nearly on the same level of quality as the Bible either.
@GroundZero_US6 ай бұрын
@arches_aviation8584 I hear you. You should probably reach out to an Orthodox priest to get firsthand information. Other than that, look into Lutheranism and Anglicanism. On the spectrum of Christian denominations, they are more in the middle. They aren’t quite Protestant and aren’t quite centralized like the Catholic Church or Orthodox Church; they're sort of a middle road. God bless you on your journey.

The funny thing about "(insert practice here) is pagan" with regards to spiritual realities, is that the ancient Epicureans who denied the presence of the pagan gods in the world, were still just as pagan as any other pagan. And the modern neo-epicureans who deny that Christ is present in our world are just as pagan as ancient pagans.

Both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches admit that roles were further defined and clarified. This isn't a challenge to orthodoxy, because neither Church claims everything they teach was taught exactly that way in those terms at every moment in Church history. The issue is heresy, which would be rejecting the authority of the Pope and splitting the Church up, then pretending there is one Eastern Orthodox Church rather than separate jurisdictions without a uniting magisterium and no way to settle disputes. Also, Jay Dyer is about the worst source you could use if you're trying to represent Christianity. Notice how he twisted Paul to try to say women should never teach in a church? 1 Tim 2 is what he's alluding to, but that is referring to teaching the homily, made obvious by the fact that Paul is talking about the roles of bishops and deacons. Imagine a little boy in church asking his mother a question about Christianity. Do you really think Paul is saying she can't teach her son but needs to go find someone with dangly bits to do it? These are huge red flags. If you really are a Christian, you should be more careful about your sources. Really ugly to suggest Christianity denies women can teach within the walls of a church. Still, not as bad as misrepresenting the development of doctrine as an admission the Catholic Church teaches heresy. That really is what I'd expect a New Atheist to do - Lie about what they know to make it seem like they have a strong argument.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I think one of the biggest issues when it comes to the Bible is one of authority. Protestants believe in the absolute right to private interpretation. If that's the case, then they cannot deem anything the Orthodox believe as heretical, because we have every right to our own private interpretation of the Bible. If our private interpretation is that the eucharist is the real presence, then protestants have no right or authority to tell us we are wrong, according to their own beliefs. To do so would be to deny the right to private interpretation, or to claim that you can only interpret the Bible privately as long as its agrees with protestant beliefs, which is of course a blatant contradiction. In fact, protestants can't claim ANY interpretation of the Bible is wrong, including those that state Christ is not God, because again, that would be a denial of the right to absolute private interpretation.

25:06 Note to Protestants: This "remembrance" is *participatory;* Every celebration of the Eucharist participates in our Lord's propitiatory sacrifice on the Cross. This is why the offering must be pure, and why those who partake unworthily are chastised and condemned. Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. - 1 Corinthians 11:27-28

Two observations: 1. Traditional "mainline" protestants, especially Anglican and Lutherans do recognise Scripture, Tradition and Reason, and apply all three to their teaching and practice. These groups may not all come to the same conclusions as the Orthodox but they do so with legitimacy within the faith once delivered to the saints. It's the rabid anti-tradition and "I am the only one who is right" protestants that invest the internet that are leading people away from the apostolic faith 2. I am really bewildered by protestants who claim that the guys who established the canon of Scripture didn't know what was in Scripture. An example - the same guys who recognised the passages in the Gospels referring to Jesus' brothers and sisters also taught the perpetual virginity of the Virgin Mary. They knew what the text said and they gave us the correct interpretation.

I personally think that bowing down to icons violates the 2nd commandment
@randycarson98122 ай бұрын
The Greek word "proskuneo" is used to describe the act of bowing. As seen in Revelation 3:9, bowing is not always an act of worship directed toward God; it can also be a sign of respect or submission. Similarly, in 1 Chronicles 29:20, the people bow down to both God and King David. In doing so, they show honor to both, but they do not worship David; they worship God. When Catholics bow (proskuneo) to saints, they are showing respect and veneration (dulia), not the worship (latria) that is reserved for God alone. Stated another way, you can bow (proskuneo) to God in an act of worship (latria), and you can bow (proskuneo) to a statue in an act of veneration (dulia). Accusing Catholics of worshiping saints because they bow before a statue reveals a misunderstanding of the different types of reverence being expressed. *Verses* _Then Bathsheba bowed low with her face to the ground, prostrating herself before the king, and said, 'May my lord King David live forever!” (1 Kings __1:31__)_ _Then David told the whole assembly, “Now bless the Lord your God!” And the whole assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their ancestors, bowing down in homage before the Lord and before the king. (1 Ch __29:20__)_ _The descendants of those who oppressed you shall come bending low to you, and all who despised you shall bow down at your feet; they shall call you the City of the Lord, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel. (Is 60:14)_
