Love this video, Alan. And my girlfriend and I love Madeira too after discovering it as soon as travel was allowed there when lockdown eased. We've been back since too! I'm 46 and my girlfriend is only a few years younger but this has tugged on my heart strings. So many more people should be aware that being alive doesn't always mean you're able, and so the time we have to experience the world together with a healthy body is vanishing faster than we know. Keep it up and we'll be back in Madeira soon, hope to bump in to you. Allan

This is an important topic. My husband and I had a significant age difference. We made plans to retire overseas. Had done our exploration, came back to the US to pack up, and major heart attack for him within weeks. We delayed leaving for his recovery, but he decided he was no longer up for the challenge. Five years later, he is gone. I’m still hoping to head out, but now as a single. Time is precious! Best wishes to you both!

I have had some health challenges also in the past 4 years, and although I exercise regularly, I know that my mobility could become altered in the coming years. Absolutely awesome video footage. I never knew Madeira was this beautiful and after seeing the footage i think it is more scenic and breathtaking than other places like the Greek islands, Cinque Terre, and even the Amalfi we recently visited. On another note, your narration on the meaning of retirement was very thought provoking, emotional, and very realistic. We all get caught in the rat race to save for retirement. I partially blame the late start of our retirement on the system we have in US where you are forced to work till 65 to get medical insurance unlike in other countries. Also US life style during work years are always with that uncertainty of losing the job due to lay offs and the work environment and we end up missing out on that most needed personal life balance during the younger days. These opportunities and options as living in Portugal are recent discoveries (thanks to You tubers like you), and should help to get away from the slavery of work beyond the late 50s to enjoy the Golden years. Thanks again for the fine video and the "POWERFUL MESSAGE". We wish you a long, Healthy, and Happy retirement. Will definitely meet you one of these days to hear your fine words of wisdom in Person. Best regards.

Thank you for your honest appreciation of vulnerability and the woes of retirement. I am 66 Anglo Irish living in Palm Springs California with my wife who is 80. I work part-time during the winters and we travel during the summer months either back to Europe or in our RV to cooler places in America. I felt sad listening to this video. It lacked the enthusiasm of your earlier ones and seemed more resigned to the inevitable. Transitioning from tourist to resident has pitfalls such as doing the same activities every day or visiting the same restaurant rather than staying home and watching TV. I think if I lived anywhere in retirement I would want to get engaged in some voluntary or part-time work to feel the connection with the locals. Portugal is one of the best countries in Europe to retire for price and pace. The mainland is more accessible to the rest of Europe so I would be more inclined to that. When my wife is heading to heaven and I am still here, I will probably do six months in Europe and the rest in America traveling to and from when the air fares are cheaper. I want you to know how much I appreciate your videos and the adventure you are sharing. I suggest you pick up the pace and share the fun side of your time together which will attract more subscribers and likes. God bless.

I have been waiting for this new video to ask you yet another question. In terms of the content of this video it is off topic. So, I will begin by saying that I agree with you, one does run out of energy as one ages. At a mere 73 years of age, I am considering giving up my house renovation work when I turn 74, rather than waiting until I turn 75, as I had originally planned. Up until now, construction work is how I have been getting my exercise, along with walks in the countryside. Now, I will go off topic. I would be concerned about the stresses and strains put on a 50+ year old VW Beetle. Context. As a young man I had a Beetle 1300 from 1966 to 1971. It was more than suitable in the city and the lowlands, but not especially appropriate on narrow, curvaceous, steep mountain roads found in much of British Columbia. In Norway, we also had a 1992 Golf III that we kept for 14 years. Again, it was suitable for the daily drive, but strained in the mountains. Since then we have always evaluated a vehicle in terms of its power, torque and braking ability. Madeira is even more mountainous than Norway. Do you have any reservations about using you VW on mountain roads?
@ItllBeFun2 жыл бұрын
Olá Brock, Thanks for the continued support you have given us. Regarding your question about my car, Here's the long answer. My first car when I was 15 years old was a '58 ragtop Bug. I've had many more after that one. And, the fact I have been a mechanic for over 50 years, I'll keep it going as long as I can. It's American specific, with a 1.6 liter engine. I converted it to front disc brakes, and went over the car thoroughly before bringing it to Madeira. Now, I realize it's 52 years old, so anything could happen. At 66 years old for me, the same could be true. So far, we both keep chugging along. Enjoy your journey Obrigado Alan

@@ItllBeFun Thank you for your reply, Alan. After I sold my VW in 1971, I looked after my parents car, a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere. They had retired to Faro, in the Algarve region of Portugal. Innocently driving along a major urban artery, but with very little traffic in the evening, I braked for a red light. Nothing happened, and I sailed through it. There was no crash with anything, and I managed to park the car after the intersection. It turned out that the master cylinder had broken. This incident has impacted me for over 50 years. So, I am very glad to hear that you have retrofitted disk brakes onto your Beetle/ Bug/ Type 1.
