We make an annual trip to Madeira from the UK and plan on coming for most of November. It is an enchanting place that works its magic effortlessly with some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. It also has a famous ‘Goldilocks’ climate rarely too hot and rarely too cool and is a very safe place with almost non existent serious crime. Really glad you two have found your slice of paradise and good luck to you both.

I have been to Madeira 30 times and love it. Was great to see you on Praia Formosa . We love it and Barra Azul is a favourite pit stop on our frequent walks from the centre of Funchal to Camara dos Lobos. I love the little houses with their vegetable gardens on the cliff side there. It’s sad that the extensive colony of masonry bees seems to have collapsed. Good luck in your adventure

At first, I was a bit shocked that you had considered Arkansas and Tennessee as possible retirement locations, but then you did mention places that I would have suggested like Mexico, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. As a Spanish speaker, those last three would have been on my list. Although Madeira is an incredibly beautiful island with a great climate, I would be reluctant to live in such a place. I don't like flying that much and being able to hop into my car and drive anywhere I want in Portugal, Spain, or even France is what I have always dreamed of. Lisbon is five hours away by car, as is Madrid. After seven hours behind the wheel, I can be in France, crossing at Irún. I have all of Galicia with its hundreds of miles of coastline just three hours away. I have been to Madeira, driving all around the island, and loved it, but for the reasons mentioned above, it is not for me.

It was one of the places we always shopped for property but never got around to purchasing. There are many different islands to choose from. Since you have 5 years to narrow it down we would recommend planning multiple trips to different locations. This way you will get a feel for all that the Caribbean has to offer. Thanks for asking We have high speed internet so we can work and take classes this makes our bill a little higher than some. Our cost runs 32 euros a month for both high speed internet and cable.

Hi Alan, am envious you are taking this journey. I've thought about it for a long time but have so many question. I wondered how it works with your social security. Is the money deposited in an account in USA and then transferred (with charges) to Portugal?

Hi Jane, Thanks for watching. Amazingly the Social Security administration will deposit into your US account or into your foreign account. There are a few rules regarding the foreign accounts. There are certain countries where you can not live and collect your SS. They are not places you would normally look at. Were you living in California? Property taxes are not that high in every state ! I agree with the Health Insurance. I don't think the Hospital are as nice as the Hospitals in the USA. 🤔 Adventure is good. But please don't say negative things about the Best country in the world. 🤔🤨😬😏😔
