I have this thought that I would declutter a lot, throw everything else in storage and try a 5 year plan, renting out my current home. Then if it felt right to permanently settle abroad, the detachment from belongings would be simpler. Also the security of having an easy/familiar return if needed. All musings for now but fun to think about ✅

Enjoyed your video, thanks. Madeira is a gem of a place to live, which after 53yrs living here as an expat Brit I can attest to, we had an amazing community of American friends here 70's through 80's a talented and creative group...still miss them, so glad to see more Americans settling here. ( I built a holiday home with my father here in 1969 married in 72 at 19, honeymooned and stayed, retired here ever since! I dearly love the island and its people that have kept me safe and happy all these years, my son was brought up here (35 now) he also loves the Island. Need any advice, just ask, I am an artist and Botanist.

Thanks Alan and Leslie! How is it going learning Portuguese? The reason I ask is that when we moved to Norway, 40+ years ago, and at the age of about 30, learning Norwegian was so exhausting. The worst period lasted about six months, from about six months after our arrival until about a year after our arrival. We thought we understood things better than we did, and there were numerous misunderstandings. Currently, we use Duolingo on a daily basis, to learn assorted languages, and even used it to learn some Portuguese before we visited Madeira in 2017. My better half probably spends an hour a day on languages. I put in about 15 minutes. In part, this is done to keep our brains active. For the same reason, I also spend some time working with sudoku on a daily basis.

Love your video's Alan and I am sure they will be of great help for fellow Americans making what is a huge move abroad into a totally different world.. As a Brit it wasn't so massive for us .. (and we had made it at age 36 by first moving to the Netherlands for our work.) Our retirement move to the Algarve was therefor not so stressful, we knew the requirements of another EU country The big thing for both moves was the language . You definitely needed Dutch in NL.. but not so much Portuguese in the Algarve as Portugal ,and especially the Algarve has such close ties with the UK..English is spoken everywhere .However it is very important to do what you're doing and make the effort to learn the language . We loved Madeira on our last visit.. enjoy this chance of a second life

I have been planning my move for 18 months. I agree, sometimes it all feel so daunting and stressful but I know it will be worth it. I have moments where I think "what are you doing?" But then, I have the easy answers that keep me going. I am sure you had your fears as well. I don't have to get rid of too much but it still seems like a project. I have sacrificed a lot to get to this point but I wouldn't have it any other way. I look forward to making new friends and having new adventures. By the way, I am also 66 years old.

Since you are retired as I am, (I've only seen younger folks commenting on living in Portugal), maybe you can explain the IRA and Roth IRA withdrawals. I am told that Portugal WILL tax US IRA and US Roth IRA withdrawals - on the capital gains. But these capital gains were not earned from Portugal, so I don't understand why they are taking taxes from it. I understand the whole double taxation thing the US does when expats move to a foreign country, but I don't understand why Portugal is taxing my US accounts that had nothing to do with them. I am not earning any money in Portugal and living off my own savings. My capital gains come from global stocks and investments- nothing from Portugal. As long as I pay my fair share for healthcare, etc, why would they be involved in my US accounts? This is my hesitation about moving there.
@ItllBeFun2 жыл бұрын
Ola Abrams, Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. From a legal perspective we cannot advise you. Please contact your tax professional in the US regarding international tax filings. We use Bright Tax for USA taxes and a local accountant in Madeira for our Portugal taxes. Hope this helps Have a wonderful day Leslie

***I have a question, please*** First I want to say thank you! Thank you for sharing. We're getting so much out of this, I hope it's worthwhile on your end as well. Now as for my question, these steps you took were no easy tasks. And so I'm wondering why Madeira and why Portugal? I can think of plenty of good reasons, but were there other contenders in your global search? Like, for instance, the other top 3 or top 5 contenders? It's such a big step, I'd rather leave no stone unturned than to realize afterwards there could have been a better fit. So if you don't mind sharing, since we like your way of handling things, what were your other top countries for consideration? Thanks and all the best!

I am 45 years old with very little set aside for retirement at this point. I have always been curious about the stock market and have witnessed some people who played the game right and retired early because they used the stock market. When I ask them, most said that they invested very little to start with, but their portfolio grew. I do have a significant amount of capital that is required to start up but I have no idea what strategies and direction I need to approach to help me make decent returns

Ditto about talking to a financial planner. Make sure he/she is something called a fiduciary. A fiduciary is someone who is legally required to represent your interests and not the investment companies that give them bonuses for what they sell. Also, this year is a bit tricky so do try to understand the current conditions for investing.
