Check out current top players (mcdavid, Crosby, bedard, etc). Their top hand is almost glued to the top of their hip as their base position when they have the puck. You become much more versatile and agile.

So true, I only play my back arm out when receiving hard sauce or on an on-hand snapshot
@kirkelleson642
@kirkelleson642 Жыл бұрын
He’s mostly talking about in stride when skating. You never want it tucked in when in stride and stick handling. However You do bring it closer to your body for a quick snapper, a deek or within traffic which is often.
@koehlza
@koehlza Жыл бұрын
@@kirkelleson642 that's what better players do though. Maybe full speed forward stride where you have one hand on your stick. Linear crossovers and shuffle strides/corkscrew dominate the majority of skating in games now and the better players keep their top hand very close to their hip unless making some specific dekes or shooting.
@kirkelleson642
@kirkelleson642 Жыл бұрын
@@koehlza no they don’t. I’ve played hockey since 5yrs old so i personally know from experience. It may look closer when seeing from your tv but proper technique is hand off your hip and not glued to it as your wrists will also guide your elbow. Quick and fast stick handling to set up a rapid shot maybe. It might be closer like 6-10” But top hand should never ibe “glued” to the hip.
@koehlza
@koehlza Жыл бұрын
@@kirkelleson642 we might be arguing over semantics and definition of "glued". I'm not trying to say it's literally attached to your hip, but much closer than the gap he was trying to show as proper technique. He literally says to keep your top hand out and then when he demonstrates pulls it back in. I've also played hockey since I was 5 and the game is a lot different now, players are much more skilled, but some coaches are still using a lot of outdated techniques.

Form is objective. Everyone’s form is different because our bodies are different. Crosby and McDavid do not follow this style of stickhandling. That doesn’t mean what this coach is saying is wrong. But he has to keep in mind that if everyone skated, stickhandled, passed, and shot the same exact way you’d have a lot of players hindering themselves. Watch Kaprisov stickhandle too that is another big example.

“No puck handler in the NHL skates like this (with their top hand tucked near their body)” Then at 0:54 dude IMMEDIATELY tucks his hand into his body as he handles the puck. Also, I’m watching NHL playoff hockey and literally every single player handling the puck tucks their hand into their body, seriously watch ANY NHL player handle the puck. Either everyone else (including himself) is wrong in how they handle the puck or this dude is just spinning a tale. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Love what he is saying but right after what he says he puts his hand on his hip! I will say I have played hockey my entire life and I am a hip stick handler. Yeah…top hand should be “in the pocket.” Maybe that’s an exaggeration, maybe he’s exaggerating to prove a point. But he should have used that expression. Your top hand should be in the pocket. The best players do this unless they are doing something specific or pushing the puck ahead with a full head of steam. Then it might pop out more.
