Now here's a thought. Switching inch measurements over to rectangle diagonal instead of tube diameter would just confuse everyone. What if, hear me out, we switched to centimeters instead. Since no one measures in centimeters right now there'd be no confusion AND you could switch to a better way of measuring like diagonal, area or circumference
@arouraios49422 жыл бұрын

I'd say the easiest is just place a label at the end of the measurement i.e. 1" senor tube radius or 1" sensor diagonal or whatever. But lets be real, they are intentionally using that measurement for marketing, even if we think of a better way to avoid misleading, they for sure wont pick it up.
@simioni2 жыл бұрын
Diagonal is the worst system every invented to measure imaging devices. It's meaningless by itself, and even if accompanied by aspect ratio it makes comparing devices very hard. Area is much better, at least for screens. But area is also trickier for cameras since it's difficult to produce non-round lenses. So a lot of cameras have sensors that are actually larger than the image circle of their lens can cover, but of course this extra area is useless for capturing light. So the only true measure of what a camera system can capture is the image circle, which is a lens measure really, but is the only indicator of the maximum size of the lens that a given sensor can cover.
@pictainment2 жыл бұрын
The sensor size measurement is from old times. At that time only 2/3 from 1 inch was usable. So diagonally 1inch is 16mm. This counts for all camera sensor measurements

Measuring the image sensor by the size of a theoretical circle that it can fit in *does* still make sense and will continue to make sense for as long as the lenses are circular. The "1 inch" size of the sensor defines the characteristics of the lens that you will need in order to be able to have a full-frame image without a vignette.
@branbroken2 жыл бұрын
Except that vignette is only occuring if you have a sensor larger than the projected image circle and you arent performing any cropping. Most manufacturors are intentionally doing the opposite and ensuring they have the sharpest portions of the image circle filling the sensor.

@@realracer0353 Most point and shoot cameras also use these same 1 inch sensors. It's a by-product of the photography world. Even if someone purchases a point and shoot camera and wasn't aware of how the naming convention came to be (sensor size that would fit within a 1 inch vacuum tube in this case) they would still have the same confusion. The entire photography naming scheme is just odd and always has been. Medium format sensors are WAY larger than Full Frame sensors but the names don't imply that. I don't think the naming scheme should be changed for smart phones exclusively.

Great video, very fun and informative! DPReviewTV did a video recently about sensor sizes. Other channels and sites have pointed this out in the past. It's my opinion sensors should be advertised by area. So a "I inch" sensor would be known by it's area in mm (approx. 10 X 13mm ,being generous again) so it's area would be 130mm. Advertisers and camera companies could call it a 130 sensor. Seems reasobaly sensible and a lot more accurate!

One inch sensor in a smartphone requires a long optical lens, therefore the space for the camera must be thick. Smartphone reviewers are sometimes stupid when they say the camera space is too thick but at the same time they want a smartphone with a good camera.

I like how a lot of smartphones advertise with "WOAHHH 64 MP CAMERA SENSOR!!! 128 MP CAMERA SENSORR!!!!" even though it doesn't mean anything if the lens is made of plastic. the images arent going to be 128 megapixels, they are limited by the lens. so while it is going to take up space like a whatever size image, it wont look like a whatever sized image.
@StarfoxHUN2 жыл бұрын
It means, altought definelty not as much as ppls thinks. It helps with futureproofing as the more pixels, the better work the software can do while post-processing and software can always improve. And also i heard it helps heaps for low-light photos too altought i dont know the details about that(Edit: It's not helping for low-light, see long comment below).
@masononemine17022 жыл бұрын
True, also with the lenses being so tiny they are always affected by the effects of diffraction to a degree. That said tho, I really do wish that we get more native higher mega pixel sensors in Smartphones. Just compare the images from Xiaomi Mi 10 pro or mi 11 with any samsung phone with that 108 mp sensor since those phones use the exact same sensor except that they bin it down to 25 megapixels instead of 12 mp and the result is quite clear, viewed on a bigger screen the Samsung looks terrible compared to the Xiaomi.
@technicboy59172 жыл бұрын
@@StarfoxHUN I understand that you don't understand so I just wanted to make you understand. The more pixels there are in the same sensor size the worse the low light performance(usually). This is because the pixels on the sensor itself is smaller and therefore received less light and cannot use as high of an ISO to achieve the same noise quantity. What smartphones sometimes do is include each colour of pixels as a separate pixel. Since there are 4 coloured pixels in one "normal pixel" the actually pixel count should be divided by four to achieve the same amount as there would be in a DSLR or mirrorless camera. I know it's a long response but I just noticed you noticing some cap online so I just wanted to give you notice so you would notice too.

Actually they're limited by the colour (Bayer) filter resolution. If you compare the filters between a 12 MP standard Bayer and those Quad or Nona bay with 108 MP, they would actually look exactly the same. So why does it say 108 MP? It means they just have extra light sensors behind each colour for noise reduction and simultaneous bracketing (HDR).

Nup everything is correct. 1 inch is a terminology in photography where the tube infront of the sensor was 1 inch in diameter back in the film times. A true one inch sensor would be somewhere between an APS-C and a full frame sensor

I'm actually more impressed with that 5x optical zoom. Better than 3x and 10x (quality) in s21/22 ultra. Btw, the photos still look a lot "smartphonish", soo I think it's a waste of potential. The mi 11 ultra could have got the "new" quality just ny a few tweaks..
@supreme40232 жыл бұрын
Not a waste but it actually holds up to the S22 Ultra and maybe does a few things better. U cant literally say this as a waste.
@OXIR2 жыл бұрын
Does it look better though? At 10x, 20x etc? I think 10x optical zoom still looks better but it's that Xiaomi uses a 48MP sensor for 5X periscope while Samsung uses 10MP sensor for 10X periscope. But maybe Samsung uses a smaller sensor. I think the periscope lens on Xiaomi is still produced by Samsung if I'm not mistaken. Google too uses it because years ago there were news of Samsung buying the Corephotonics (spelling is probably wrong) company which produces these periscope systems.
@jorgeescudero50342 жыл бұрын
@@OXIR I'm not saying that this 12s ultra looks better at 10x, I'm saying that the quality of it's 5x pictures (details, contrast, noise control, not just zoom) it's better at 5x than the 3x and 10x in samsung at 3x and 10x. Because samsung is using a lot smaller sensors on 3x and 10x. Of couse at that nominal zoom levels s22u is better, but the picture quality is average, while 5x on xiaomi is very good. Still I would go with samsung just because their software has been better and more stable for a few years now.
@jorgeescudero50342 жыл бұрын
@@supreme4023 does a few things better being the sensor reasonably bigger than the one on the galaxy s22U when it should take overall superior photos always. That's why I'm saying "wasted potential". Xiaomo can do a lot better. We are talking about a "normal " camera type size sensor!! That's not a step but a whole stair above competition.
