Geology matters. By the looks of it, there, you only had to penetrate the hard-packed Surface-Layer - which has resulted due to 200 years or so worth of overstocking and grazing by Hardfooted Feral Livestock. Under that compacted layer - which prevents Rain from soaking into the light fluffy spongy Topsoil, forcing it to instead pool, sheet, and then run off, causing both Erosion and lowered Subsoil Moisture Levels.....; you were into that old Aboriginal-managed Pre Colon-ist Era Australian Topsoil... On the plus side, you'd be very happy with your soil being rock-like when the rain starts flooding people's trenches and the artillery starts blasting you overhead. Meanwhile they'll be laughing at you because their trenches were easy to dig... then a month later they'll be drowning in mud having to refortify every time a shell or nade even gets near their trench. Short term loss for a long term gain 👌

This is why my adventurers actually bring shovels with them. Weaponry and armor are always #1 with rope being a close second, but getting a good shovelhead, especially an iron one instead of wood, can do a lot when there isn't some sort of mage that just goes, "Tiggledy-mole, I conjure a hole!" and makes you feel like an idiot for daring to be prepared. Arguably more important than the tool you use to dig, however, is the number of people you have working. If you have a company of even 100 people, with their hands, that's a lot more dirt getting moved than two guys with shovels, let alone swords. Of course, clearly you guys just need to work out more. Everyone knows that once you get strong enough, you can just cut downwards and make a fissure that splits the ground a good two feet across.

If I badly miss a tomahawk or spear throw and they go into the dirt it's almost guaranteed the edge is chipped or curled over.

The question is "Why do i not spend more time in holes?". There were a pair a twins i went to elementary school with who only dug holes at recess. They'd dig em all recess long and then fill em back in before the whistle was blown. We called them "the digger brothers". They brought in real shovels and picks and everything. they smuggled em in at night and then buried them. It's possible they didn't always fill them in either. Some of them i think they actually braced and made tunnels out of, and then pretended to fill back in but nobody could prove that. Anyway, my point was that sometimes you can have all the fun in the world, just digging a hole...not me, it's hot and sweaty work and i'm 31 now. I'm too old to be doing that for a hobby.

Make it thinner or more angular and it will cut more effectively and thrust more effeiciently. Because of the scooping angle on the sides edge alignment will shit so leave that blunted.

If adventuring, patrolling, hiking, or camping, always carry a shovel. Also always carry a single edged knife. A saw, axe, hammer, gloves, canteen, blanket, & a convenient way to make fire would be nice too.

I appreciate the possible necessity to use a sword to dig a hole, but I'd rather have a spade than a sword if I could only bring one on my adventure.

What about "half swording" to improve the leverage and emulate (the motion of) a traditional shovel/spade?🤔

I absolutely love that you still rock the Honshu Single Handed Broadsword by United Cutlery (actually a bastard sword). It is an absolute BEAST of a sword! I've got all 3 versions of it, plus a couple other blades from the Honshu line, and that "Broadsword" (actually a bastard sword) is by far my favorite. For a sword I paid less than $250 for, the durability and toughness of it is absolutely insane. After putting my own edge on it (the factory sharpening is awful) it out performs swords I have spent $700 and $800 on. You simply won't find a better quality sword for the price. It just makes my heart happy to see that it still makes regular appearances in your videos!

Could you guys do a review over paddle-style swords like ikakalaka from Africa, or like the fire emblem sword skallagrim uses in his video. And see if there's a way to use it in a more conventional way, like a shovel.

If all you have is your sword and you have to dig a hole, I will use the crossguard (to break the ground) and my hand (to lift dirt up).

As an adventurer, as opposed to a soldier, I would pack for my personal travels with the same basics that old school backpackers do: small trowel, thread, rope, and some form/substitute for a tarp. Most notably I'm leaving out duct tape because that product and its uses don't transcend time like the others.

So we have Why am I in a hole? Why am I in a Barrel? All we need now is 'Why am I in the Air?' (Maybe testing out aerial combat with harnesses) and 'Why am I in the Fire?' (Possibly testing Medieval Fire Protection techniques, obviously using animal meat so as to not put the talent at risk)
