We Tried to Pronounce Oklahoma Town Names

In the South, never judge a town name by the way it's spelled. These town names in Oklahoma are no exception.

A lot of the "weird" pronunciations of Oklahoma towns come from their roots as Native American words. Chickasha is a Choctaw word. Miami (pronounced mi-yam-uh) comes from the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Checotah was named after a Creek Nation chief. Even the name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people" or, more formally, "Land of the Red Man". This is a state built and inhabited by Native American tribes, and the culture of those tribes is the lifeblood of our state.
