Not just Cherokee but other Native American names as well. North Carolina is just shot through with Native American names. Places like Lumberton, Chocowinity, Mattamuskeet, Manteo and Pantego just litter the eastern part of the state and of course the western counties have tons of them too. Famous people abound as well of course and in some cases famous places as well. Look at New Bern (Bern, Switzerland), and Bath (the oldest town in the state named after Bath, England).

@@shortybeck1948 that man was mayor for a while. Cuz that’s been said for a long time here. And yes it’ll depends on what side of the tracks your aiming for. Varina or Fuquay. Both had a spring. I grew up next to two of these towns in different parts of my life. Conetoe and Zebulon! I was always told Conetoe was a Native American name and was very much reprimanded whenever I wanted to say "Cone-TOE" as kid. Never thought I'd ever see it in a KZbin video. Even in own lifetime in Hawaii, I would have a hard time pronouncing some of the words in Hawaiian or a score of other languages if I hadn't heard them before. It also doesn't help knowing that early written attempts of documenting other languages came from a Western/English listener, which leads to subjective interpretation of what was actually pronounced at the time. It happened with writing about Hawaiian language, East Asian (Chinese/Korean), so it would have occurred even with Native American. I'm sure other countries encounter similar situations when multi languages and cultures start to blend together.
