I noticed that most regions had the music abruptly stop when the V appeared, but a few (such as Yorkshire and HTV) kept the 'tinkling' going at the end. I think that sounds better in fact!

This was actually my favourite ITV ident. I love the music and graphics. Although LWT was great... but that was because it meant it was the weekend!

ITV at it’s best. The generic logo was legendary, much like the 2 or the multicoloured 4, at a time when millions upon millions would watch TV. They don’t make the same effort now.

I loved what YTV did with the presentation package. The edit which brings the chevron front and centre was brilliant. They actually used the longer version of the music when they opened up for the day after TV-am in the background. There’s a video somewhere on KZbin where Redvers Kyle opens up for the day and the music plays as Richard Madeley previews This Morning and Mike Scott previews The Time The Place. TV presentation ain’t the same anymore.

Beau Sexon That is because they seriously screwed up a lot of the idents in this package, look what they did to TVS, Granada’s and Yorkshire Televisions ident in the triangle, shoddy. That’s why many of the franchises didn’t use it: TVS, TSW, Granada had their own ident package and would sometimes use a combination of both, but with just ITV at the end, Ulster, Anglia and Channel. The only one that kept it was Grampian, it kept it until 1998. Scottish dropped it after 3 months and Central liked to mess around with it. Interesting idea in theory, not so good in practise.

I've noticed that the Anglia, Channel, Grampian, Granada, Scottish, TVS, TSW, and Ulster generic idents have a wierd audio defect on phones. As you can see, most of the generic idents are the ones that were not used (excluding Grampian, who never dropped the ident until ITV changed it's logo in 1998 and Scottish, who adopted the ident but dropped it shortly afterwards). This also happens to the main generic ident (the one at the very beginning).

As much as I like this, being of a nostaligic era for me, I'm strangely proud that my region (UTV) never used theirs. Even if they had, it wouldn't have lasted long as a full rebrand was imminent anyway.

The bit in the triangle only showed a fragment of the main logo which looks silly on some, Channel TV for example which looks nothing like a "C" even and Granada looks nothing like a G and the line between the G and the North arrow is missing ? perhaps this is why Granada TV refused to adopt this logo but they did use the ITV logo with the blue triangle on occasion and the nice tune ? Similarly the first YTV logo only showed a tiny bit of the Y hence the CHEEKY second version which is great !! Good old YTV, I too miss the more regional flavour to ITV, if only they had the cameras and HD technology in those days.

How do you mean generic? As in without regional identity ? Because I think grampian and Scottish television used their own individual idents until 2006 when they merged into stv, so even after the "get ready" 1989 rebrand for all regions Although I could be wrong what do I know I wasn't born until 2003 😂

@John McAreegrampian was tv for Northern Scotland like the Highlands There also used to be Scottish television which covered the central belt and Southern Scotland but they both merged into stv in 2006

Always found this ident to be a bit business-casual pretentious. Like going out for a meal, in a village on the outskirts of Leeds. An old Mill, tastefully converted into an upmarket restaurant called The Granary. It's a fun place, but not too fun to be seen as un-serious. The sort of Alan Partridge of TV idents.

30 years ago this month, ITV launched their Generic Ident. But not all the ITV stations embraced it fully if memory serves me correctly. Thames and LWT were among the few who were happy to be part of the ITV network by using their own take on the generic ident on a regular basis for three years but Anglia, TVS, TSW, Granada, Channel and Ulster were not at all interested and carried on using their own regional on-air identities.

Following TV Franchises told the powers that be to get lost over the generic ident: Anglia, Ulster, Channel, TVS, TSW and Granada used it briefly but decided to have their own ident's instead (TV Ark has the "sky" ident blended with the generic on their site), only Grampian were the ones to keep the ident until 1998! the rest dropped it after a few years and Scottish only used it for 3 months-in other words a "BIG FAT FAILURE" on the marketing department.

Granada did use this generic logo very rarely and when they did it blended at the end into a full advert for Granada Television . If I remember right one of the people shown was Morrissey.

@@davidread604 Yes they used the Generic Ident until 1996 I believe, they adjusted it first because the original design that put their logo, the Chevron [ or stylised Y if you like ] was badly done with only showing half of it. It was an interesting idea, but from a design point of view, the designers really messed up the franchise logos, its no wonder some were not interested when they saw the final product or dropped it very quickly.

@Thomas Nevitt: Yes, only Grampian Television kept theirs until 1998 and then used the Blue Square/postcard idents that Scottish were using at the time -STV swallowed up Grampian.

the news is Look at what they did to their Chevron in the triangle, they designed it badly and for Granada too and also TVS, not only did the lettering of the franchise not look anything like that ( I am from the region originally and grew up with the franchise) at the time, they had a logo too. They chose not to use theirs and so did other franchises because of the terrible butchery of their idents in the package. So Yorkshire’s was re-designed, you don’t mess with the people of Yorkshire, they can get pissed off very easily.
