Until the following week, my headcanon was that they would use the new one whenever Tweek wins something lol. The clock town theme became so synonymous with Tweek Talks for me. Brawl- was sooooooo fun. I played Sonic a good amount because the forward B insta speed burst let you play the most degenerate jab/grab mix-ups but also Zelda was SOOO COOL. Swapping positions with extremely disjointed sweet spots and tossing out the screen melting ftilt was wild.

Maybe it’s changed but I think the last big start gg research project revealed that while Steve was the most common character only about 3.5% of players in reported matches played him (pretty sure this was from PG stats when that was around)

Had a dream recently where I'm near the summit entrance and Tweek is there and he's saying he's not going to compete, which made me very upset. The reason was unclear and he wasn't willing to say why at the start, there was something regarding it being connected to him being dropped from TSM and them not allowing him to go which made me very mad, but then it was explained that's not the reason. He just didn't want to go, potentially relating to Steve being allowed, or some other personal reason. I tried to convince Tweek to go for a while saying how it's the last summit and all, in the end I promised to give him 1500 twitch subs if he joins summit and wins which he instantly agreed to. There was a whole deal with people talking about my promise but I don't remember much from the rest of the dream. Felt like sharing

I think that the biggest issue with Steve and kazuya is that they are such an unsightly imbalance in an otherwise well balanced game. It’s hard to not be a little resentful toward the characters for that. It’s easy to imagine what the game would be like without them and a lot of people would prefer it.

Steve and Kazuya are not comparable. Stop it, please. In a few months everyone will start winning vs Kazuya, he has legit counterplay and it's not that hard, at least not compared to Steve. Steve is not as much of a straight forward match up as Kazuya is. I don't think these two are comparable. Kaz is Top 10 for sure but Steve is Nr.1 and it's not close. Does it feel bad to play vs Kaz? 100%. Is he on Steves level of actual good? No. Tweek has said it himself, he just stays away and punishes. Almost every character can do that. MuteAce echoed this as well. We all agree that Sonic, Joker, Aegis, Steve, Fox(or Sheik) are better than Kaz, so. I don't even play Kaz, but I think he's being pulled into this sh*t with Steve because he feels equally different, not becuase he's actually as good as Steve. Kaz is full on bulls*it for sure, not saying he's not. But he is nowhere near the level of Steve. There's like 10 Steves in Top 64 every major, how many Kaz solos are in Top 64 at majors?..1, *MAYBE* 2.

If the competitive life of Smash4 and Brawl lasted as long as Melee, or even Ultimate currently, top players would’ve found an answer to Bayo and MK. . . Meanwhile Steve’s tech literally has no counter play!

exactly ! it’s even more true in ultimate because so many characters got potential that could be pushed even further, the meta will always keep changing as long as people keep trying to find new counterplay at the end of brawl, while the western scene gave up, the japanese scene was still going strong and the mk players werent as dominant at the end cause the other players found counterplay vs arguably the most broken smash character of all time even bayo dominance in smash 4 is greatly exaggerated. at the end of the game, there were no top 10 bayo player aside from tweek

@@Lerkero that’s a fair argument ! however, i don’t think it’s something that will necessarily happen when it comes to lower level players, I think they will mostly be influenced by the opinions of top players and what is being said in the echo chamber, rather than the strength of the character himself. Steve doesn’t have a MU spread as polarizing than the best characters from previous smash games. He is more a wacky unique character, rather than a character that could invalidate most of the cast. At lower levels, a lot of character can be annoying, especially in a game as balanced as Ultimate. Steve has a large playerbase yet his results aren’t necessarily overwhelming for now, and I personally don’t think they would increase that much. You can only get carried so far before you have to face a player with actual fundies. when it comes to top players, as long as Steve is legal, the large majority of them will keep entering and trying to find counterplay. Their competitive drive might lower sometimes but it always comes back eventually. The community used to complain about Joker, Inkling, Palu, ROB, Ike, Pikachu,.. So many characters and yet they always overcame the difficulty eventually and learned the counterplay. And when top players stop complaining about characters, a large portion of the community stops as well. Again your point is fair, and if we ever find a direct correlation between Steve and people attending less tourneys, then the argument could totally be leveled in the discussion. It’s just that for now it’s not the case. If anything, Steve results have been dropping and some of the top Steve players even stopped playing the character or even the game itself

yea the reason why kaz and steve arent more common in top level is cause there really isnt much benefit in learning them cause top players will actuallys tudy and be way more prepared to fight the endless amount of bullshit these 2 throw at you. Meanwhile these characters are gigantic menaces in low to even high level of play which is an issue cause low and mid level is like 90% of the scene lol.

MTG players might be the only group of players that match Smash players on how petty and pedantic they can be about the rules. The classic case was a match where one player played a card named Pithing Needle which stops the card named from activating it's effects and named the win condition of the other player's deck Borborygmos Enraged. When the Borborygmos player finally played the card and the Pithing Needle player said it wouldn't work he responded with "well you named Borborygmos not Borborygmos Enraged" and well those are two separate cards he was only playing Borborygmos Enraged in his deck and it was incredibly clear to both players that he was naming Borborygmos Enraged. He won the game off that pedantic rules lawyering and Wizards of the Coast had to change the rules so that if it's clear to both players what card is being named they don't have to specify the whole name.

7:00 - One thing that is important to consider during all the Steve and Bayo talk (and character balance in general) is that Nintendo has never intended to make Smash a competitive fighting game. Nintendo probably doesn't put that much thought into the competitive viability of new characters because there isn't an intention to balance them for competition beyond playing default 'party mode' settings in Smash
