For a future smash game they got plenty of ways to aproach it. If they release a deluxe version, it wouldn't just be exactly like ult with some extra characters, they would for sure balance out the game further and add some new modes. I think rebooting would be the most interesting aproach, cutting the roster in half still leaves you with more characters then brawl, and going all out on other games features while also completely reworking some character movesets could be really cool to see.

The lighting in a bottle reminded me of how I remember Maximillian Dood calling smash ultimate an "impossible game" which is so true I dont know how they will ever encapsulate the magic again, the launch trailer, the reveals everything just aligning so perfectly (except the online) I legit think deluxe is the way to go, and at least me personally I would be happy with new characters, some patches (please god Im so sick of Steve Sonic) and a good online. I dont know if any game can ever capture the magic in the way smash ult did, which is simultaneously amazing, but also a bit sad

I don't think a new Smash needs to "outsell" Ultimate to be considered a massive success for Nintendo. Ultimates had such an insane budget after licensing such popular and beloved 3rd party characters. Like Coney said, they can focus more on Nintendo IPs and although it may not sell more raw copies than Ultimate, it can still make just as much money for Nintendo since they won't have to dedicate such an insane amount of money to getting characters. Don't think this is what they will do, but I think trying to chase the roster size of Ultimate forever is just not sustainable. My money is on Ultimate Deluxe for sure, but eventually if they keep plan on making new Smash's, you can't really chase the "Everyone is here" forever

I just can't get into Multiversus. The knockdowns, ledges, shields, and grabs are the things I love about plat fighters. The only universal options being move, attack, or dodge makes the game feel less "deep" (there's probably a better term). Not saying it's bad though, more gameplay variety options out there is always a good thing.

Also Tweek's reasoning for them not doing a reboot seems backwards LOL. They can't do better than Ult (roster wise) so going back to square 1 is the logical option. It also doesn't need to sell better than Ult. If they play their cards right any type of Smash can print money, and a Nintendo only reboot would be the best way to do that.

character-wise I think there's still a solid A-list left of big video game franchises left, though we are getting close to the end of it - Chrono Trigger, Halo, Cuphead, Nier, Ace Attorney, Guilty Gear, Fortnite, Overwatch, League of Legends, etc. some of the existing included franchises also could afford to expand their character inclusions, like Sonic with Eggman, Mario with Waluigi, Street Fighter with someone like Chun-Li or Zangief, even Zelda with more of the newer BOTW/TOTK characters.

Did I miss it or when they were talking about Ultimate Deluxe they didn't even mention the legal challenges of getting all the characters back for a different release. Nobody seems to be realizing that any new release of Ultimate would need approval of all the copyright holders again. Negotiating for their use once doesn't mean you can just use them for a new release.

I don’t think people understand how bad having 100+ characters would be, we already took forever to learn matchups in this game now imagine more characters being added… Ultimate added 23 new characters in total, for a total of 89 characters. If the new game adds at least that much more we’re at 111 characters, imo that’s too much

Having multiple Smash games on one console would be interesting. If they bundled Melee and Brawl onto one cartridge, I could see that working well alongside a brand new game. The other option is just port Ult and give it a ton of new support/DLC (if so, they likely already have this on the way).

The thing is MK8 Deluxe did add come new mechanics I think, like a new purple drift. If they made Ult Deluxe with just tiny adjustments it could be decent, mostly because its the only realistic future for 'new' smash games

Honestly yeah. I dont really want to lose Ult's roster, and there's plenty more to play for this game imo. If this game got consistent patches, people wouldnt be so bored (among other reasons). Guilty Gear Strive isn't that new anymore either, and people are still playing that and talking about the meta because there's still more to come.

The thing with a potential Ultimate Deluxe is that the moment you start balancing the game, tweak this mechanic and that mechanic, add this option and that option, improve the visuals a bit, improve online, add a few new characters for novelty, etc. You end up with A LOT of small things to work on, and at that point it seems Sakurai just favours doing an actual new game. The same thing happened with Smash 4, I remember thinking about how they could do a Smash 4 Deluxe for Switch, but then I started thinking about all the things I wanted “slightly tweaked” and the list was getting long. Ultimate ended up basically tweaking most of the things I wanted, and it resulted in a brand new game.

I really think Tweek is underestimating how messy the business behind licensing out characters can be. Contracts are written to include exactly what ways the character can be used, how many games they can be put in, and what exactly counts as a “new game”. There’s almost certainly some characters whose contracts don’t even allow them to be ported to an Ultimate Deluxe on the Switch 2. And now after the success of Ultimate and the “Everyone is Here” slogan has been revealed, every company will be jacking up their prices. It was a miracle to get everyone for Smash Ultimate, it’ll be next to impossible to do it again. Also what does he mean by “it made Square look stingier than they are”? (24:05) Square seemed stingy because they were stingy. They weren’t planning on Sephiroth being added 6 years later at the time, they saw how successful the Cloud DLC was and agreed to sell off a little bit more. But it’s not just Smash that Square was stingy with, it’s a reputation they have in general.

I get tweets point on the new smash game and I am on the reboot side. Reason being is that it does not have to sell like or better than ultimate it just has to sell as good as nintendo's expectations . And a reboot is a good way to restart the franchise, if they just do a deluxe version it will sell less than vanilla ultimate and reboot because who will re buy the game when there will backwards compatible

It's also a bit surprising to hear from Tweek considering he's a big Pokemon guy so he knows about how Sword and Shield dramatically reduced the pokedex roster compared to the 3DS entries yet it sold like crazy. The NA marketing tag line used to be "Gotta catch em all" and yet they did away with it despite how ingrained it was. Roster size isn't the end all be all.

I agree that you can’t really outdo Ultimate, but if you refresh all the OG characters’ move sets that would be unbelievably hype, I always wouldn’t expect many games on the Switch 2 to outsell their counterparts on the Switch, partly due to the pandemic the Switch has had a crazy cultural explosion similar to the Wii but more long lasting, if they put out a similar product it won’t do the same

Quite honestly, there is plenty of legal stuff (character contracts) to make it a deluxe version. It is very unlikely that all characters will be able to show in a new smash game without requiring all the negotiations to start all over again. Also, didn't Mario kart 8 deluxe sell like crazy?

Yeah assuming licensing costs don't increase from all of the collabs (once they realize they can probably ask for more) I would totally expect Ultimate DX. Balance some stuff, patch a few glitches, add a few fighter passes, stages, and maaaaaaybe make a Subspace 2 equivalent and it's going to make a bajillion dollars. I'd buy Ultimate again for Switch 2 if i had to, so I'd definitely buy a DX version.

To me I think it depends on how relevant they think the switch is gonna be after this new console drops. If the switch is gonna have staying power then I don’t think people are gonna be willing to buy ultimate again like they were with Mario Kart 8. But I also think that casual players would be upset if they cut the roster significantly, and I think if Sakurai were heavily involved than so would he. The series is just in such a weird space where it’s a party/fighting game that doesn’t have a story but still has a sense of finality in regards to its legacy. Regardless of what they do, I’m gonna be hesitant on buying it because I can’t see it being worth.

I think the best way they could make a deluxe version is that during the negotiations with characters Sakurai managed to negotiate that the character can be used again in future releases. Personal wanted scenario they add more music and skins to the roster cuz i want Red Moon and Night Shadows Dancing in game. Unfortunately the terrible issue of entitled fans looms over if they do announce a new title. The pandora's box of the fighters pass has caused many discourse in the community that apparently you should only enjoy this character or you're not supposed to like this series. Worse when they start accusing about Nintendo being paid off or Sakurai is a liar over a mistranslated tweet or he's incompetent. Yes people actually said this. The absolute worst was when this guy started going on a tirade making hit pieces against Sakurai calling him a liar and even going onto his youtube channel and spammed harassment messages to him. He even gloats that Sakurai blocked him cuz he was "telling the truth." One of his comments he made was "Evil Cloud and Kid Cloud cuz investing is for losers and i care about my own ego" something along those lines. This was because Sora was picked over Lara Croft. He still is making hit pieces to this day and the people that agree with him are "weird" to say the least one making a tasteless joke that Sakurai should fix a certain "crisis" in japan than work on another game. What I'm saying is that I'm not ready to see people act like this again if a series they don't like gets represented and then start sourcing players or influencers not liking it either as absolute gospel and if you do like it go "insert LTG quote"

I would buy an Ultimate deluxe with reworked unique characters, more stages, more fixed/features (hazards toggle, short hop macro toggle, less buffer) more music, fixed wifi (rollback please) arenas/ranked/unranked/etc., buffed low/mid tiers and more balanced top tiers and a few more characters (Please more LoZ characters). Thats my hope. But I would definitely play a soft reboot with a smaller roster with different newcomers if the game feels better, is more hype and is more fun to play I don't need more characters. Melee's character pool is small but if the gameplay is hype then its all good.

Okey here is my idea for a single player smash. Make it like world of light but instead of a top down view make it a playable normal 2d map. It would make it more replayable Similar to hollow knight and exploring the map would be different depending on the character. Also for the next smash I hope for more party modes like volleyball and dodgeball. Similar to tether ball from Rivals of aether

I honestly don't even think I would be interested in buying an updated Smash Ultimate and a new system for it. I love how Smash Bros has a new game with each new entry and would definitely be interested in that though. I doubt I am alone in this. Most casual players of Smash also would prefer a new game over an update of Smash Ultimate.

I aint gon lie, if they release ultimate deluxe i am not byuing it... especially with the new console propably being backwards compatible, and i dont think im alone in this. Like you think nintendo is going to re-release ultimate for ever? How many charcaters will we end up with? How do you even manage something like that? How do you even innovate on it? The great thing about new smash games is that they are always so different. It is true that a game with less characters will sell less, but I dont think ultimate deluxe is selling well either... You gotta give it something up, Ultimate was the best selling fighing game of all time. also expanding on the same game just doesnt sound something nintendo would do.

Regarding the coverage of the new smash game I think you guys are being a bit disingenuous if you think a new smash game won’t sell consoles. Even without all of the characters if it offers something new and unique it is going to sell and people are going to buy a switch 2 just to play it. It doesn’t need all the characters to sell because that was never the selling point. The selling point was the smash formula itself. The tight gameplay, unique characters, and the platform fighting style has enough appeal on its own that it will sell. Every single platform fighter longs to be smash and they all take what was done in smash to try to capture the magic but every person playing those games hopes that Nintendo will make something that is unique and fresh to pull them right back in. I personally didn’t even play Ultimate until 3 years after release but when I did man did I love it. It was still smash! It wasn’t the huge cast that pulled me in, but smash itself. Just food for thought.

We need a smash delux with character updates. Namely a ton of nerfs to Steve, sonic, aegis, fox. Then new dlc packs. An entire fighter pass of mostly Square characters would be so dope. I could see lightning, Tidus, Squall, Riku, and Roxas.

Theres only one company that could wrangle enough properties to compete with the mass appeal that smash has, and that's Disney. A platform fighter with Iron Man, Spiderman, Elsa, Luke Skywalker, etc etc could legitimately compete. I don't know why Disney would chase that market, but if the game was really well made, they have the characters

I desperately want a reboot with updated, streamlined movesets. Ultimate will never happen again, so instead of trying to do Ultimate but worse, I would rather them make a fresh take on the franchise, built from the ground up.

I think the biggest flaw with the Smash community and most communities at that point is that need for a "better game", I get it but think about it for a second, why is it so necessary that games keep 1 upping themselves, why there needs to be a surprise or a selling point, sometimes all we need is just more of the same, if its good its good. Think about games like Megaman X or Zero series, the X series was awesome and it was the same god damn plot every single time, just different stages and characters, until they wanted to innovate and then it all went to shit, on the other hand, the Zero series was the same game just added a few abilities and expanded the story and its one of the most beloved franchises out there. yes, we always want more and better, but its not really necessary, specially when it comes with nintendo, see how stupidly hype we got about mario rpg and thousand year door when they werent sequels, but the same old games with a new shiny coat. That toxic need fans have to push games to always be better, always surprise, always innovate, is one of the main reasons that allows franchises to die.

It's pretty early to be talking about a new smash. Sakurai is still on his youtube content creator phase. He repeatedly talks about how he doesn't want to make smash anymore. A new smash isn't the guarantee smash players assume it is. Every new one brings us closer to the end of smash games. It's not about what will sell best to Sakurai. It would be the obvious choice to make a new great Smash game from a business perspective but from a creative's perspective, it's tiring to make those games. Anybody else making a smash game would be only slightly better than a Multiverses or NASB. Sakurai's ability to seamlessly incorporate characters of a multitude of visually and technically distinct intellectual properties cannot be understated. Multiverses and NASB only highlight how complex the design of smash truly is. A platform fighter is a fusion of genres that they basically invented and immortalized. All this discussion about how much of an honor it is to have your character in smash is over-blown. It's a stretch, but considering how Nintendo likes to suprise, there could be a fighting game with a completely different approach to the gameplay coming. If Sakurai full on retires the game director title, then their best option might be handing the torch to someone with a more traditional fighting game background. Maybe they call it smash, but maybe it plays like street fighter or tekken. The discussion is just so exhausting because of how many directions there are to consider, and that's why a lot of people would rather not have the discussion until Nintendo brings it up in an official announcement/trailer. edit: also expecting them to still be licensed to reuse the characters in ultimate is pretty ridiculous. Sakurai is not hyperbolizing the difficulty of putting together an agreement with a Capcom or Square Enix that is both profitable and satisfactory to that company. Snake not being in Smash 4, and returning for Ultimate is the perfect example. Game developers put caviats into their contracts such as; if this title doesn't make this much money or retain this many players of our character, or if "so and so" is not returning to "job position x" then we reserve the right to pull our character(s) from the game.

Boo more doomer content. Guys, I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times. If something in your life is no longer bringing you happiness, its okay and healthy to step away. And then you don't harsh the vibe of people who actually enjoy said thing. I think the ult competitive meta is wild right now, especially at the level right below top 8s at big events. It feels like every tournament some low-mid tier character specialist is having another crazy run. The level of play is so high, people have optimized their punish game to the nth degree so you can see what an optimal *banjo* set looks like. Idk, I think it's pretty cool.

I think the next Smash will be different than Ultimate. I think it will be more thematic to a certain character archetype, and have less game cross over but with the same amount of characters. For example, a Fire Emblem character only game with the mechanics of Smash. Or even Pokémon, or Final Fantasy. Maybe they will have 2 different versions like Pokémon games, that can cross over somehow.

They tried that with Kirby fighters 2 in 2020, I doubt it’d work with any Nintendo franchise outside of Pokémon

To make the next smash game a success it needs a community overhaul that will never happen. Its to be rid of VGBC and Gimr, it needs to stop being so focused on politics on twitter, it needs to have less polarizing fighters and less people complaining non stop about them, it needs to be more thick skinned and not so soft. Its a great game but the community poisoned itself and now its just off putting, same with melee. The smash community for the next game needs a fresh, new identity. It wont happen if its just Ultimate with new over tuned dlc, no one should want that, its the reason why ultimate is dead now.
