He's amazing. I adore him, probably a little too much: last week he was crossing the street in his chair, and I was standing in the curb cut like an idiot, staring at him like "Woah you're Itzhak Perlman!" and he was looking at me like "If you don't get out of the curb cut I'm going to get hit by a cab." I'd never inconvenienced a genius before! Especially not one of this caliber. Not gonna lie, it made me feel sort of special.

I'm very new to classical, sold £3.5k of rock and pop records last year (just couldn't get it excited about it anymore), I still listen to Jazz, this remind me of Art Tatum learning piano from a recording of a duet - nobody told him it was a duet! I really find I'm able to focus with this music on - and people aren't rude to each-other in the comments! ;-)
@luceafarul5797 жыл бұрын
Jon Wild this is just my rather egotistical opinion but classical is REAL music. Everything else is second rate of classical :P But yes there are a lot of stereotypes that classical is boring. But once you get into it. You can't listen to anything else! Pop and rock are so amateur In comparison! Welcome to the dark side :P

See, the reason a lot of people are not that interested in Bach's music (or downright hate it) is that Bach takes some skill to master! I grew up disliking Bach because all I heard of his music were sub-par performances or clips. Until I heard Itzhak Perlman for the first time.
@FernandoMedinasolos13 жыл бұрын
Maestro Perlman pulls this music toward his genuine reality, his time and place, his unique life experience. He does not, in my opinion, try to or pretend to be in somebody else's shoes, particularly somebody who wrote this 292 years ago. I'm willing to stand corrected if this is not so. With all due respect to Baroque players who, through much investigation, offer us that other and much appreciated opinion via their interpretation of this great music.

@moemoeloe well, it's his interpretation, he is such a great artist that he can really play it the way he wants. It's not said, that you have to play Bach in a baroque way. And as Shostakovich said " A great piece of music is beautiful regardless of how it is performed. Any prelude or fugue of Bach can be played at any tempo, with or without rhythmic nuances, and it will still be great music."

The emotion this piece draws from the listener is so complicated. Bach's music tends to be described as enigmatic in that you can't tell what Bach was feeling when writing a particular piece. The reason for that is the emotion is truly mixed. The happiest times are followed by the saddest times then up again. It is not a pure joy or pure sadness. That is the human experience.
@raptorjesus69538 жыл бұрын

Probably because I am most used to it, I favour the guitar transcription. For one thing, the arpeggiated chords seem to have been written for a plucked string instrument (we do know that JSB sometimes played the lute). All of which is not, by any means, to imply that the violin version, especially as performed here, is anything less than wonderful.

Moments like these---hard to find---and the average composer cannot pick these off a tree......beautiful, serious music........
@tunult13 жыл бұрын
@Haggismaker violins have four strings, and Bach writes here for four voices. The points where all four strings are written for simultaneously are impossible to play without a slight delay so a slight break in tempo is inevitable unless the notes are given very short duration, which then would sound unbalanced. Having said that it`s worth checking out the recording Menhuin made of this in 1935, for me anyway, a performance with more depth to it than I`ve heard from anyone since.

Nothing, but all of bach's pieces do. And they try and say that the demonstration of flawless skill in counterpoint or the amount of notes is overwhelming, but if you listen and you actually know what you are listening to, there's a beginning, a fine and brilliant structure, and a definite coda.

Perlman himself stated (in masterclass i watched, i think) that when having trouble keeping beat, he dances a bit while playing, to keep beat not just with his mind but also with his body.
@serenag.455910 жыл бұрын
Count in 8th notes :3 that's what I'm doing!
@clare833210 жыл бұрын
Count in quavers and with a metronome a few times slowly to get a hang of it. If there are any bits you have trouble mark in where the beats lie and practice those bits a few times. Then ease your way into playing all the rhythms together with the rest of the piece. Don't forget that this isn't a dance piece: it's not a partita. Therefore you can still have some freedom in rhythm for expression purposes as you should keep vibrato to a minimum and don't make your expression too romantic. Keep in minds the baroque genre
