All my tomatoes (both container grown and in ground), peppers and pumpkins had BER badly last season. There was plenty of calcium in the ground as I compost all my egg shells in the planting space (from my 15 chickens) and add bonemeal. I did the same as you with regards to watering - a deep water every few days. I also have clay soil which holds the water well in ground. And my containers had a mix of new compost and potting mix. I felt sure my watering technique was ok. Couldn't figure it out! I did some research into our current understanding of BER and found that calcium deficiency in soil is quite rare, it's typically a watering issue that impacts the uptake of calcium. So, I bit the bullet and installed a simple irrigation system on a timer. Within a week, all my new fruits came through without issue, completely BER free. Since using timed irrigation, not a single case of BER since, on any plant.

Thats brilliant That is also why i brought up the watering problem as so many videos say it is just down to a Calcium problem which it is not Thank you

I thought I'd learned my lesson about blossom end rot, when my toms succumbed a few yrs back. Since then I've incorporated calcium fertiliser granules when planting and that seems to have worked until now. I found it on some of my "Mountain Merit' toms a few days ago and was so disappointed as the toms were huge. I got rid and dissolved (what had turned into a solid block of said granules) in several litres of water, which I soaked the soil with. I'm hoping that the problem is fixed. If not, I'll definitely be using the milk/egg recommendation, Ivan. Will definitely invest in a meter. Thanks so much for the excellent video.

Thanks Iven for the tips of how to try and prevent blossom end rot of which some of my tomato 🍅 plants have suffered from season after season this season however I have added some diluted calcium and they are all looking healthy so far. I have never done a measure of the PH level so I just ordered a PH tester of Ebay .Thanks once again Tim 😊

My tomatoes have been terrible this year. I purchased some special tomato compost, but unfortunately I overwatered (so my fault entirely). On one plant all the flower heads have dropped off too 😭. A lesson for next year I suppose. Last year was so bountiful too.

I watched a video of the egg shell option and he said to grind them very fine before adding to the compost. Just broken shells will not break down in anyway so he said. I've done the grind fine this year with shells from my own chickens. I'm in Quadgro pots so unlikely to dry out. So no blossom end rot at all at the moment. My worry with the Quadgros is that the roots end up in the water tanks so I worry that that is affecting the plants too. Although I've had great crops since I've had them. We all keep on learning with no definate answers where nature is involved. Once again great content Ivan.

Thank you Ivan for your informative and interesting videos, this is the first time that I have set up a garden and you have been an endless source of brilliant information for me. I have 7 tomato plants and 2 of them look the same as your plant, stressed, I now know how to tackle the problem. I'm not expecting amazing results from my veggie garden this year but rather using it as a learning experience so that next year I will have learnt from my mistakes, (hopefully). Thank you again and take care.

I just use the NurtriGrow 2-Part fertiliser. No other non-chelated feed can provide calcium without blocking magnesium! The only reason that BEM occurs is down to poor soil feeding.

Thankfully never suffered from this but wondered if your soil lacks calcium. Tend to use compost as opposed to garden soil and not let the soil dry out.

@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Looking at the anemic soil... Do you lay down a layer of compost in the winter in your greenhouse prior to spring planting ? It really helps revitalize the soil. The garden soil in it's regular form isn't enough to sustain decent crops, especially tomatoes that are nutrient reliant. (can only speak for the soil in my area which is pretty poor)
