I've been growing tomatoes for over 40 years, mostly Heirloom. I grow 20 plants, 20 varieties, and try a couple new varieties each year. I've never had blossom end rot, till this year. I got San Marzano seeds last winter. They got BER. I liquified pelletized calcium a couple days ago and poured it around the roots. (7/18/22). I now see it continuing on more tomatoes. It never occurred to me to spray the leaves! Thank you for that idea! I'll spray tonight or tomorrow. Thank you for that excellent video! It turns out San Marzano is notorious for BET! (I'm in zone 7A, Lower NY. and we just had 3 days of MONSTOROUS Rain!! up to 4" in one day). :-) GardnerPete.

This year I'm seeing BER on my tomatoes, all varieties except cherry ones, and plants aren't growing as tall as last year. I put crushed egg shells all over my garden but likely too late, will have to spray leaves with calcium and pray it works to save ones that are still small. Last year all tomatoes were amazing, tall plants, big beautiful fruit!

Thank you for the information. I always plant my tomatoes with a 1/4 cup of ground lime. That seems to work. I never knew that if your plants got tried out the fruit can get dried out. Keep up the good work and happy gardening!

Thanks Neiler. As I've been growing and visiting other gardens, intermittent watering and drying out is the major culprit of BER. Something to think about...

Hey there. Thanks for the reply. Mine are growing outside in Ireland ( zone 9 for you guys) so cant really control watering, been drought conditions for a couple of weeks and that brought it on. Really interested in the cal/mag relationship. It’s interesting that they are chelated in human vit supplements.

Excellent explanation!! Sheds light on this potentially difficult or perplexing problem. Thanks 😊. Got my first experience with that last year. Had tomatoes in a pot on the driveway. Didn’t put them in the ground ( which I always do) and slacked on keeping them watered well. Bam! Ugly tomatoes lol. This was great to help understand this more completely. I am a science girl and love talking cellular pathways lol.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Definitely Mary! People always jump all over the calcium thing...but often it's simply intermittent moisture that's the culprit... Especially in container gardens where the pots can heat up and dry out FAST!

I use Alaska Fish Fertilizer for my tomato and pepper plants - Do I still need to buy calcium and magnesium for my tomato and pepper plants? So far, no blossom end rot yet, but I thought prevention is better than cure. Thank you so much.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms2 жыл бұрын
Hey Yanni, I've been finding that although Calcium is at the center of Blossom End Rot, our soils are normally loaded with it. The issue is watering and the TRANSPORT of that Calcium. So adding more rarely helps. Focus more on mulching, long, even waterings, and not letting the plants dry out.

Great video, I water my zucchini and tomatoes everyday and other day as they are in the same bed. A pretty good soaking actually. So far my tomatoes look good but zucchini are getting blossom end rot by about the 4-5 inch mark. The plant looks very healthy but the yield keeps rotting. What should I do? Been told to use crushed antacid, egg shells, epsom salt.

Too much water. No plant wants watering every day. Your washing all the nutrients out of the soil.

We have hard water that’s high in calcium so I thought that would be great for preventing BER, but apparently not. Does that have anything to do with the structure of calcium in water being different from that in soil or is it more likely that I’m just needing to add or have too much of something else in the soil preventing uptake/absorption? Our water and soils in this area are alkaline with PH generally between 7-8 so I have amended with sulpher in the past…

Great video, I love the in-depth explanation. You get bonus points for mentioning cat-ions. So are the other macro nutrients (K,N,P) an-ions? I've heard the Epsom salts trick a million times too. Strange how misinformation can spread
@TheRipeTomatoFarms6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! There's widely considered to be 9 essential macronutrients (Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sulfur, Magnesium, and Calcium. Sulfur, Magnesium, and Calcium are cations, but the COMPOUNDS they are available to plants might very well be negatively-charged. Take Nitrogen, which is a gas in its lone form (N2). It is completely unusable by plants. From the atmosphere, through many processes, Nitrogen makes its way to the soil as ammonium (or Nitrite/NH4+). Again, not always usable by plants. It is only when the Nitrites are converted to NITRATES (NO3-) that the full spectrum of Nitrogen is available to plants. So its very complex. But the two main competitors to Calcium are Magnesium and Sulfur, which is evident by where they sit on the Periodic Table. Most of it is way over my pay grade though, ha ha, and I am mostly going from memory from university, which was 19 years ago!
@OakKnobFarm6 жыл бұрын
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms interesting that the nitrogen gets picked up in it's negativity charged state (NO3-). How about potassium? Do you remember? My last chem class was also at University.... But 25 years ago in my case ;)
@TheRipeTomatoFarms6 жыл бұрын
Potassium is a K+ if I remember correctly. In fact, when studying a soil's "cation exchange capacity", its often measured in Potassium storage. I used to know this stuff like the back of my hand, but that was ages ago. Let me dig out one of my soil bible textbooks and see what I can find/remember! :)

We didn't study soil chemistry in our class (I was headed to be an EE, so we focused more on industrial processes), so I'd be curious what you turn up. Fascinating stuff.
