On November 6, 2020 our French Bulldog Clark passed away from IVDD. We’re heart broken at the loss of his young life. We made this video to raise awareness of Intervertebral Disc Disease to hopefully help another family who may be going through this, or hopefully to prevent a family from going through this. We miss our boy so much, words can’t describe how our home has changed without him. R.I.P. perfect boy Clark Kent. June 15, 2017 - November 6, 2020. 💔

I went through this in January of this year with my doxie. Stage 4/5 into surgery. Took care of him just like you recounted and he has recovered to the point he could control his bladder and walk outside atba slow pace. I am blessed. You did your best and it is good you made this video to spread awareness. Some dogs develop this even from not being active....it is hard but you did your best.

I'm sorry for your loss guys my frenchie is going through this right now. I agree there needs to be more awareness about this disease. Frenchies bring so much much joy and happiness to our lives to be cut short at 3, 4, and 5 years old is heart breaking. I don't want to think about losing my little girl . Like most I can't afford a 12,000$ surgery so I just pray she gets better. She's my joy when I wake up and when I come home and don't want that to end.

We're going through this with our sweet 4 yo maltipoo Chloe. Doing everything like you guys mentioned to make her comfortable at home after the emergency vet visit. We're praying she lives even though both her back legs are paralyzed we could still enjoy her. Tomorrow is her 5th day of not eating though so we're scared we could lose her. We can tell she is in a lot of pain. Like you guys, we didn't have $10K dollars for surgery. Please pray she lives.. 😢 Thanks for sharing your story it means a lot someone like you to relate, just sad what happened Clarke did not make it. 😢 I am sorry..

My German Shepard became paralyzed with her back legs a month ago. She is 9. I won’t put her through a surgery but i massage her many times a day. I have her on a doggy cot and I have slept on the couch for a month to make sure she doesn’t try to jump on couch or anything. Today she stands with no buckling and can go potty alone. She had mobility in both back legs (limited), but much improved. I know there is no cure but for the moment her mind is so determined. I just don’t know the pain threshold. She is on meds.

Words cannot express my sadness at your wrenching and horrible loss. My Frenchie Winston - only 3 yo and the picture of busy, sassy, running and playing health - just went down 2 days go, out of nowhere…..IVDD; paralyzed backend. I am a doctor, and was never aware of this disease that affects not just long dogs, but short-legged dogs. Winnie was lucky enough to have surgery yesterday, still praying to be able to bring him home. I know nothing takes away your grief and loss. Nothing. But Clarke was such lucky boy and so blessed to have you both as his loving parents…and I do believe he will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge; running, wriggling, and pain free. And that you will have a joyous reunion with your little boy. Bless you both. 💕And thank you so much for sharing your story and finding the strength to, through your grief, reach out to educate and help others. You have y love, respect and I am one more person who will remember your sweet Clarkie.

Thank you so much for your kind words, I believe we’ll see him again too. I’m so sorry this happened to Winston and I hope he will have a full recovery. Some frenchies who don’t fully walk again I see them living it up in their wheelchairs and they don’t miss a beat, we even got one for Clark but it was too late but I hope that Winston will make it through with full use of his legs. Please if you remember to let me know how he is doing I’m his recovery. ❤️

@@suzannefiala2483 actually 20 days after Clark passed I gave birth to my first baby so I have had my hands full with her and the other pets we have. I have considered it but loosing Clark the way we did I don’t know if I could ever get another Frenchie, though I think about it often. @@suzannefiala2483 why do you keep telling them nothing takes the grief away. Loss happens and everyone eventually gets through it. You should be encouraging them that it gets better not telling them oh nothing will take your grief away. Everyone deals with loss differently. And usually in time grief turns into the love and good memories we had with our loved one and you become at peace with what happened if you're grieving properly. Better times are ahead.

I am so sorry for your loss and appreciative of you posting this video. I am currently waiting while my precious frenchie boy, Yoda, is in his second spinal surgery (his first was only 6 months ago). IVDD is a terrible disease and you two obviously did everything in your power and gave so much love to Clark. My 3 year old doxie was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago. I came across your video, while desperately trying to figure out what I can do to help her through this. I know it has been a while ago, but I want to say how sorry I am you had to experience this. It is gut wrenching to have a baby you love so much, decline so quickly right before your eyes. I am sitting here bawling listening to your story. Thank you for sharing. I wish there was so much I had known and done differently with my Aurora. My heart is aching in fear of what will happen to her. I am also so freaking angry that this surgery is so expensive. It is so unfair. If any one of us had the money, we would all do any surgery there was in a heartbeat, if it meant saving our pups. It just feels so wrong to not be able to afford it, and have to watch the dogs suffer, when there is possibility out there to make it better. I don't have 10k laying around. Like most people. It just hurts.

Thanks for making this. I’m currently going through something similar with my 3 year old frenchie. She started gimping on her right hind and then within 1-2 weeks she was almost paralyzed on her hind end. She just got an MRI and has IVDD. We took her to Missouri University vet and the MRI showed her disc slipped to the right side near her intervertebral fragment and hit her spinal cord on the way out. The vet wants her to do 4 weeks of cage rest and no surgery but I’m scared if it gets worse. I didn’t know about the disease before this have bred Australian Shepard’s and lots of horses my whole life. My heart shares your pain. We wish we would could've know how bad our buddy's back was. We just lost our Frenchie "Cooper" at 3 yr 10mos old. He was an absolutely gorgeous dog with muscles and charm. Came down with his third IVDD attack (first two he recovered in 1-2 days) on a Saturday night and by Monday he was gone. In terrible pain and suffering and there was nothing we or the vets could do to save him. Since it was the weekend the surgery couldn't be scheduled till monday morning-noon ish. He then got progressive myelomalacia which caused him to stop breathing. He also had a few seizures waiting for surgery which delayed everything. It was from the stress and pain. we are absolutely crushed and it will take a long time to recover. It was so sudden and painful for him. RIP Cooper Rip Clark.

My chihuahua passed from this as well, he had an episode and we took him to the vet not knowing what it was. We put him on meds and bed rest and he recovered in less than a week. Unfortunately only a year and one month later we found him paralyzed from the waist down on his bed when we went to wake him up in the morning. We had to put him down because there was little chance of him ever coming out of his paralysis and the surgery which didn’t even guaranteed that he would recover was too expensive. We had no warning signs, after 8 years..he was taken from me in an instant and I hope your Clarkie is playing with my Bubbas until we are reunited again. Sending many hugs 🥺💜

I just came across your video and started crying because in April I losy my 2 Shih-Tzu's ...Jack & Molly, both were 13 not related, but both were diagnosed with Dementia in Jan.. 2021....Jack suffered paralysis over the next year and lost a little of himself everyday...Molly first lost her sight, then her hearing and her memory started to fade...but she always knew mommy , even when she died, Jack didn't remember me or his name...that was devastating for me. My Pug Jeter , who looks like your Clark when I hold his ears up, is still having problems adjusting to losing them too. When he hears me crying , he comes over and cries with me like he is right now. I'm crying for your Clark because he may have not understood what was happening and nothing a human could say would help him understand At least Clark and Molly knew and remembered that love but Jack didn't. I saw that look of fear and unknown in his last look and it lingers with me. I'm sorry for your loss and I'm so sorry for my rambling but it just brought up my loss and I'm still trying to deal with it and the fact that I couldn't do anything to help them through it or help them understand WHY it happened. First, I am so, so sorry for your loss. I know this was 2 years ago but I've been watching everything I can the past 2 weeks as I have been going through similar situation. I also want to comment on how full of love both of you are and what good parents you were. Maybe by now you have another fur baby in your life. Clark was adorable. He's watching over you now. I have educated myself as much as possible. On Nov 17th, 2022 my little Sadie lost the use of her back legs. I also never heard or seen that happen before. Took her to the vet, they knew what it probably was but since I didn't have pet insurance for a surgery that would run $8k-$13k, we first did xrays, blood tests. Xrays showed where a disc ruptured (normally, the soft area between the vertebrae bones) & over time that soft area can turn hard & when it slips or ruptures or other names for it, it presses against their spinal cord & paralyzes them. So we decided to try heavy duty steroids & complete crate rest. Sometimes steroids will reduce all the swelling & in turn reduce pressure on spinal cord & they can kinda get better. Sadie was doing slightly better everyday & I was so excited. Then 4 nights later I knew something was wrong. That trembling that you talk about, I believe is their little body's reaction to so much pain. She slept next to me but by morning it was much worse. We were desperately trying to find an ER with a neurosurgeon on duty that could operate just 6 days ago, Monday morning. I am aware of the 5 levels & at times they can go back & forth like Sadie. A 4 then few days a 3 then back to a 4 & possibly a 5. Time frame is important if they have even a little deep pain feeling to recover to walking. I was fortunate to have the money, so they FINALLY did the surgery the next day on Tuesday afternoon. It's been so scary. I was able to pick her up on Thanksgiving. My kids all went for dinner at my son's & it was just me & Sadie, I had so so much to be thankful for. I'm scared to pick her up to take her to do her business outside. I've been trying to get these dog back braces cause I have to go up and down flights of stairs with her. I had to get a new larger crate & orthopedic beds & up all night giving her 6 different medicines. So today is day 6 after surgery. It did cost so much. Almost $13,000 between everything so far & I'm sure they'll be more. I put aside money for a car. I have been driving the same car for almost 19 yrs. Taught my 4 kids to drive in my mom van. My husband died 2017. That was why we got Sadie, for my youngest daughter who was 15 when her dad died. But after a year or two, my daughter started being a teenager & was gone a lot so I spent more & more time with Sadie. Sadie was was born August 27, 2017. She is a little mutt dog. Part daschund, chihuahua, terrier?? It doesn't just happen to pure breeds. I'm sure who you got Clark from didn't do anything wrong just like you didn't do anything wrong. It's from impact of jumping off things, running down stairs, being overweight is probably the worst thing that can affect a dog. Yes the disease is that the disc can slowly become calcified and they are more prone to it. Dogs with short feet. Just like boxers have hip problems. I was curious though about Clark. Did the have the herniated disc in his neck? That would I think explain him passing. Eventually it would affect his breathing. You two did everything right. Laying with him til the end is just what you would do to any family member you were so in love with is leaving. Thank you for sharing your story. It gave me so much more to be thankful for. Bee safe. Bee happy, Veronica PS, sorry it's so long but I know how you are feeling cause I am going through it right now.

I know this is over 2 years later but I found your video after experiencing a similar situation with my 4 year old Frenchie. I appreciate you sharing what happened to Clark and I'm deeply sorry for your loss. You did everything you could to help save your boy. My Frenchie, Logic, was overall healthy and his vet was surprised about it each time we brought him for his annual appointments. The only issue he had was inflammation in his back a year before we lost him. He was treated with a steroid pain reliever shot and some oral pain medicine for a week. We started giving him hip and joint supplements and he improved from there. On October 30, he tried to jump onto the couch and hurt himself. He stayed on the floor for the rest of the day but could walk and was fine. The next day, he was still in decent spirits but didn't move much so we made a vet appointment for him the next day. That evening when my husband moved him from the floor to his bed, he screamed in pain like we've never heard before, started thrashing around, and got stiff for a moment. He then started breathing heavily so we transferred him into our baby carrier so we wouldn't hurt him even further. We ended up going to 2 different emergency vets that night and it was the last one where they discovered he had a disc deterioration and his hind legs were paralyzed. He also lost bowel and bladder control. They didn't call this disease IVDD but it's likely the same thing. We were presented with similar treatment options of surgery, pain management, and using wheels for him. We were going to go with pain management and wheels until we saved up for surgery. But unfortunately, the vet found out our baby boy had myelomalacia, which is a fatal necrosis to the spine and it traveled to his diaphragm. Suddenly, we were faced with the decision of letting him go peacefully or watching him continue to suffer because surgery and pain meds weren't going to help. He continued to rapidly decline and even with the sedative, he had difficulty breathing. We made the most difficult and heartbreaking decision of our lives and unexpectedly said goodbye to our boy. In our case, the vet explained that nothing could have prevented this from happening because it was genetic. No amount of caution would have helped and that because there was no sign of injury, this was like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. There isn't a lot of research done on this disease so there isn't much information that can be helpful to dog parents. I just hope this doesnt happen to anyone else's fur baby. If it does, I hope treatment can save them.

Thank you for sharing Logics story, I’m sorry this happened at such a young age as well. After reading so many comments from other Frenchie owners it really seems that you can try your best to get a healthy Frenchie but that the risk of them being unhealthy is very high from all the breeding to make them so adorable their backs are a funny shape that I think can’t always withstand how hard they play, and it seems it’s common for the genetics to just be poor as well. Hopefully these things become less and less common as time goes on. I’m sorry again and thank you for sharing your experience.

I hope he can recover well, I don’t want him to be in pain forever. I did not know about the disease either and when i told some friends two of them had gone through the same thing. The exact same thing happened to my cavapoo. 5 years old, he was completely fine, started limping on day 1, thought it could get better because he’s limped before once in his life and it went away the next day, on day 2 it wasn’t better it got worse so I took him to vet, got him medicine, by day 3 his back legs were completely paralyzed. Took him to vet again and they said my options are the 10k surgery for a possibility of recovery or see if he gets better. I chose to take him home for that last night, he was unable to pee just had droplets coming out I tried to put pressure on bladder too, and he was pooping on himself involuntarily, absolutely fucking horrible to see him like that. He was miserable. I took him in to be euthanized the next day, I couldn’t have him suffering any more. It’s absolutely horrible. Been a year without him now, I went through so much guilt thinking about what I could have done to prevent it, I had pushed him off my bed (mattress on floor not high) because he was up in my hamster’s business, and he lost his balance and fell backwards onto the floor, I checked on him but he was completely fine and still running in the fields like usual, then a few weeks later all of the sudden this happened- I’ll never know if the incident was related, but knowing it could have been fills me with dread to this day- at the same time, I now have two dogs and I roughhouse with them and shove them off the bed when they’re being too rowdy all the time with no issues, there was no way I could have known it was something his body couldn’t handle. It’s so hard not to blame yourself. I worry about the fact that I didn’t get the surgery, what if he could have recovered, there’s no way to know. I miss him so much but I didn’t want him to keep suffering. I’m grateful for my time with Teddy too, but losing him was an incredibly deep pain I can never fully recover from. Getting my dogs has helped to heal my heart but they’ll never be him, I’m terrified of the same thing happening to them but at the same time I almost feel numb, like I can’t even let myself fully love something again. It’s something I’m still fighting a year later. I appreciate this video because as much as I feel awful that anyone has to go through this, it always helps with grief to know you’re not alone.

Hey I just put my 13 year dog down. Because of ivdd. I know actually what your feeling. My dog 2 years ago lost movement in his back legs but recovered on his own in about a month. But I didnt relize for those 2 years he was most likely in pain and at risk of a relapse. About a week ago now he lost full use of his back legs and was in extreme pain. But now he was 13. I couldnt afford the surgery. And I work full time and by myself. I waited 5 days. And he regained some movement back and was able to go to the bathroom on his own with encouragement. But he was terrified when I wasnt there. He had a chance at recovery. But at his age and his history the vet said to think about quality of life. And being emotional and going on 5 days of no sleep from taking care of him all night. I quickly decided I didnt want to make him suffer anymore so I chose to put him down after I took him back in on day five after a small set back. And I've been overwhelmed with quilt because he was regaining movement back. Everyone keeps telling me I did the right thing. Because he was so stubborn he would have hurt himself more and he would have suffered more or died alone in worse pain. At least he died cuddling with me. But I cant help but feel i shorted him his life. It Is truly the worst feeling I've ever experienced.

@@amberwidmer1782 I also think you did the right thing- but I know no matter how many times you hear that it doesn’t do much to subside the guilt. My dog was only 5 so I kept thinking what if he recovered and could have lived the rest of his life- I can’t express in words how much I loved this dog, he was my angel, I hadn’t pictured my life without him. I wanted to grow old with him. I imagined when I have children they’ll play with him. Anyway, what helped me was to remember that even if he could have recovered, dogs don’t have any concept of the “future”, they only live in the moment, all they know is right now they’re in pain and they’re looking at you to make it stop. It’s not like with human beings where the quality of life trade off is more complex. Dogs just want to run and play and be healthy and happy with you. When they can’t do that, their quality of life plummets and even time spent in recovery is suffering for them. IVDD recovery crate rest for months is brutal on a dog, and it’s so likely that it would happen again, for my dog being so young and already having had limping problems before, it’s a bad sign- and for yours being old and his joints giving out and body deteriorating as he nears the end of his time, it’s also so likely that it would happen again and could be more painful next time. I saw my dog really like a human child, he was my baby, and it’s been hard for me to separate the difference between humans and dogs to come to terms with euthanizing him. It’s not the same thing as a child who gets paralyzed, they have more to live for, can eventually get married have children have a whole life, dogs don’t have aspirations like that, so where would they get the motivation to keep fighting through pain to go on living? There’s a reason why when dogs get hurt they go find a quiet place to pass, they’re not thinking of their future. And when my dog went and hid under the chair to lay there in pain I knew I had to make the decision for him. He still wanted to play with his ball but he couldn’t. He would hold on and go through it all for me, I know that, he’d suffer through recovery and maybe go through it all over again throughout his life if I wanted him to fight it, but I loved him enough to let him go even if it meant I’d suffer without him. And so did you. You did the right thing.

This hurts, my boyfriend parents has an extremely hyper frenchie. She jumps from the the top of the couch onto the hardwood floors. I probably see her do this 4-5 times a day. She clearly has no consistent training to control her hyper behavior which leads her to attack my boyfriend sometimes. I really want to help but I’m not the parents and obviously it’s not my house so I can’t be there all the time. They are at work a lot and my boyfriend goes to college and works too. Maybe I can warn them about this disease and maybe they would actually try to care for their dog. I just feel so bad. They try to half ass “train” her but they just leave a leash on her dragging around the house so at anytime they can pull on it if she does something bad. Also uses those metal collars sometimes on her but those should be avoided for dogs like frenchies because of their already existing struggles of breathing and extra neck tissue. It’s just so stressful to watch such a sweet animal to become emotionally and physically injured over time, especially when it’s not my dog. I’ve tried to tell my boyfriend my concerns but he won’t confront his parents about it because he thinks their not going to listen to him.

I’m very sorry for your loss ivdd in French bulldogs is very common 30% of all French bulldogs carry the the genetic marker for ivdd to be passed to the puppies most breeders do not test the parents for this marker and with two parents carrying this ivdd they create this horrific gene to be passed to their puppies and their new homes have to deal with the unfortunate devastation the heart break and traumatic problems this causes for the dog and owners can be reduced if good breeders would just do the right testing and stop this from progressing to these beautiful dots who suffer greatly for poor breeding. I have been breeding French bulldogs for 31 years every one of my breeding pairs are fully tested for all genetics. Animal genetics have a blood test they do to inform which puppy has the ivdd so you can get. Control of it early in their life. I have seen so many back yard breeders just putting any two French bulldogs together for the almighty dollar and without any precautions for the unborn puppies well being to have to be dealt such a devastating life of pain and suffering band for the owners who love their bulldogs. I’m deeply sorry that Clark and your family had to experience this horrific loss. I just want ppl to know that when buying any French bulldog ask questions about the parents health and have they been tested for ivdd or has any of the puppies been tested for it. Ivdd has taken too many bulldogs lives too early and many have suffered through the pain and paralysis and not to mention the vet bills that this disease cost to treat. If breeders just did the right thing to test before they create these dogs so much heartbreak could be stopped. Please ask questions from the breeders if they don’t know the answer then please do this test as early as possible so you can be on top of it to prevent disaster. My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a loved animal to ivdd and I hope this information gives you the knowledge to test your babies before the ivdd starts causing symptoms that become tragic.

it was the flooring in your home that caused the problem ,watch the dog slipping and sliding on the floor i have treated quite a few frenchies of late along with other breeds and the flooring is the common theme ,they cannot grip on hard floors ,so they slip and slide ,it would of been much better with a carpet on the floor so he had something to grip hold of ,the dogs i have treated have all recovered but the recovery varied from dog to dog depending on the injury ,sorry for your loss :(

Yes you could have done things differently however this wasn't as preventable as some might want you to believe. Dogs are going to jump run move and do Normal dog things and this will happen. Be kind to yourself you did the very best you could as dog parents. I'm sorry for your loss

In my opinion the vet that cannot see it IVDD probably do it on purpose because vet who can do a treatment is really specific they have to point you some other place which mean they will lost you as a customer, see if you guys can find out it was IVDD and mostly happen in French bulldog so why the Vet cannot see the same thing!
