Our frenchie Stella just went through this Like a week and a half ago she was acting weird and wouldn’t jump and it progressed over a few days and she was panting really bad and in a lot of pain, we took her to the vet and when she came back she was not using her back legs at all We had to get an emergency surgery in the morning and had to stay up all night with her, luckily she managed to sleep most of the night and we got her in for surgery that morning What makes me sad is she’s not even 2 yet and playing is her favorite thing, it’s all she does and she loves to play rough She had her surgery and stayed in the vet for 3 days, it was a success Now flash forward to current day and we have her in a play pen all day so she heals but we got lucky and she’s healing really fast, today she’s even trying to play again and using her back legs pretty effectively already, she tried to thrash her toy but we can’t let her injure herself again Also she was a stage 4, she had a ruptured disc and had no back leg movement but still had some feeling in them I hope that it doesn’t happen again

It’s so very difficult to go through a trauma with a friend and see their life change. And to live with the worry of it happening again! I hope you can find a way through and enjoy the journey together with these joyful buddies 🐶🐾

Folktopia thanks so much. He still has no feeling in his legs. But as long as he’s happy to be alive I’ll be happy to take care of him. This is so hard. Seeing him try to walk... in looking into a doggie wheelchair I think it would improve his life once he heals from surgery. Thank you again.

Folktopia for sure he’s so important to our family. He’s well cared for I’m thinking to see if there are other dogs in my area that might like a play date in the future. Make him feel normal, take him to familiar places... whatever he needs... but my heart is still breaking a bit for him. Poor guy. Staying positive and celebrating the small things one week post surgery he wagged his tail and lifted his right leg a bit to pee. It’ll be a long road. We will all adjust. If he’s happy to live I’ll be more than happy to take care of him. 💜💜💜

maddy gardner oh my gosh, sending Ollie and you lots of positive vibes for a successful surgery. Molly (our dog) recovered rather quickly and we were so proud of how she snapped back into her normal self. Every dog/surgery is different but in our experience it was the best thing we ever did for her. We had gone for months with her in pain on and off and crate rest just wasn’t cutting it anymore so we made the decision for her to have the surgery. I was terrified and had no idea what to expect after...however, she was crated for a few weeks and eventually we let her decide when she was ready to come out and walk around. We tried hard to keep her crated for her own health but she wasn’t having it. Now, 2 years later she’s 10 and you’d never know she had surgery. Good luck to Ollie and I’ll be thinking about you tomorrow for sure. 💜

@@karenfrino3252 One thing that I didn't mention in the video is that I got a dog-dose CBD oil for pain and inflammation. I noticed that his appetite wasn't good and his regular meds are not the best for the tummy. I don't have any hard and fast evidence that the CBD oil helped speed his recovery, but it seems like it did. I'd talk to your vet about it if you're curious.

My Jack Russell/ Corgi Cross is dealing with this right now. He has an MRI scheduled for Friday to confirm IVDD. The ‘difference’ is he had it the first time a couple of months ago then made a full recovery just by resting. The second time it happened his back legs were paralysed for a few days but now (one week later) he uses his legs again but is wobbly. He can pee and poo on his own. Sadly I couldn’t get him the help he needed earlier as he is uninsured and I had to raise the funds, I spent £2k so far, the MRI will be £1.3k and I’m looking at £4K for surgery.
@Folktopia
@Folktopia 5 жыл бұрын
The costs are daunting. Sorry you are going through a difficult time.
@ayurai9642
@ayurai9642 4 жыл бұрын
Raymond Sigar After I posted this he went for the MRI and IVDD was confirmed, by the time he went he was recovering very well and went from a grade 4 to a grade 1, they still advices surgery but I couldn’t afford it. A few weeks after the MRI he had nearly made a full recovery (or at least he was as best as it was going to get). At times he was a bit wobbly on his back legs when running but otherwise there was no noticeable difference. He wasn’t allowed to walk the stairs or jump, I would just lift him up and down. Everything seemed well until December last year (about 6 months after recovering from the last episode). Out of the blue he suddenly walked in circles looking at his back leg, then he started shaking and crying, then he couldn’t walk straight and suddenly both of his legs were nearly paralysed, all of this in a space of 5 minutes. Rushed to the vets and he was confirmed with IVDD again (3rd time in 2019), I still couldn’t afford surgery so he was back on pain meds. For the first week he seemed to approve a little, he didn’t lose complete control of his back legs but sometimes he was walking on them and sometimes he was just dragging them. He was on strict cage rest, during week 2 I had to go back to the vets 3 times because the pain seemed to get stronger and the meds wouldn’t help anymore. They’ve put him on 3 different pain killers but on week 3 he was the worst he’s ever been. He was in so much pain he was shaking all day, he stopped eating and he fully refused to move. I did everything I could but on 27th December I made the heartbreaking decision to let him go. It wasn’t fair on him anymore, he got worse and worse and to be honest even if I had the funds to pay for the surgery back in December I wouldn’t have done it after putting him through 3 weeks of hell. I miss him so much but I could feel the relief of pain when he passed in my arms. Sadly nobody can ever tell you whether you should do the surgery or not. One thing about the surgery is that they can also stabilise surrounding discs to the same time while they’re repairing the one that burst, which may or may not help in the future. I know that I don’t regret anything I decided to do, I did everything I was able to do to try and save him

@Folktopia
@Folktopia 5 жыл бұрын
@truecolors Yes, Charlie has made a complete recovery. He can go on long walks and is pain free. He has to have permanent lifestyle changes like he can’t jump on or off furniture or use stairs and can’t go to the dog park (no roughhousing). Physically, his spine still has a little bit of an arch to it and his back legs are not as strong as they once were, so continue to worry about him. But mostly I feel like we got second chance and am grateful to have a healthy doggie. I think it’s a good idea to make a follow up video too!
@Guitarchic541
@Guitarchic541 5 жыл бұрын
@Folktopia yes I totally agree you should make a follow up video. I'm glad that Charlie is a lot better. Thats sad that he can't do everything he used to, but good that he has improved. This recently happened with my dog and i'm still very upset and worried about her. It's only been just over a week since it happened and she's had surgery for it too. I really just want her to be able to walk again. I will have to try and make a sling maybe too for her as I often have to hold her when she goes to the toilet. It was really nice seeing a video about another dog who has this problem who isn't a dashound as well as that was mainly the only videos I could come across. But I'm really sorry this happened to your dog and I'm sorry you are worried about him. I hope maybe in the future he will be better. At least like you said he is healthy.

The day before, our dog was more or less normal. He could pee before the surgery, but not after. He had the surgery and was at the vet in recovery for around 2 days. When we brought him home I expressed his bladder manually for at least 4 days and I found that to be difficult (perhaps because he had some sensation and was holding on to the pee). On day 5 he did a small pee on his own and then got more and more control so that I didn’t do it manually from then on. I hope you are doing okay. Hang in there!

Hi again. My dog just got discharged from the hospital from her surgery. They said no exercise no nothing for 4-6 weeks just crate rest unless she has to pee we take her out. But I’m confused I thought we should be doing some type of leg movement for her to gain muscle. Otherwise how does she just begin to walk on her own if she goes through atrophy? When did you start leg movements with your pup or if u did any at all? I’ve just seen videos around of people doing it. Thanks!
@Folktopia
@Folktopia 5 жыл бұрын
I’m glad your doggy is home! We focused on making a really comfortable recovery environment during the time of crate rest and didn’t do any leg stuff. Our doggy had some muscle atrophy for sure, but the healing is more about giving the nerves a chance to heal- and that will help little buddy’s mind to get her legs going. You can talk to your veterinarian about the leg stuff though. I think we did at our 1 month check in. Hope it’s not too cold where you live. Good luck!!

How is Charlie now?

@cateycook Charlie is good! It’s been one year since his surgery and he can go on walks and gets around pretty well. I have to carry him up and down stairs, but it’s not a big deal. No dog parks or roughhousing with other dogs, but he has lots of love and we are grateful to have him with us. I’m working on a update video because lots of folks would like to know how he’s doing. Thank you for asking 🙏

My weenie dog just went into surgery today for IVDD. They said the surgery went well but we won’t know if she can walk again just yet. I wanted to ask how your lil doggie is doing now since I it’s been quite some time since this video. My parents are really reluctant if she never regains function and needs wheels because of the maintenance of needing to express her all the time but I’m not going to let her go just bc of the inconvenience. I guess I’m just asking for reassurance for how your experience went

Hey, sorry you’re going through a rough time. Honestly, the time spent in recovery was a bonding experience for us. And the expressing is not as big of a deal as you might think. My dog is doing well. He’s walking and can go on long walks. He’s a happy little guy. He’s not allowed to do stairs any more, but it’s not a problem. I made a follow up video if you want to see him walking around. I hope your doggy recovers quickly! I enjoy having my dog so much that even if he needed wheels I think he could still have a good quality of life. Hang in there and I’d love to get an update of you want to share how it’s going.

Folktopia thank you for your quick response! I happened to find the update video right after I posted this, I guess I should’ve done more investigating before I commented haha. But I feel the same way. When I know more within the next couple of days ill shoot u an update! This is a very stressful and heartbreaking time especially not knowing what’s going to happen. Thank you for sharing this and giving hope for everyone in this situation.

I know this was some years ago but I’m going through the same situation right now. My cocker spaniel was operated in last week and comes home tomorrow. He’s not able to move the back legs urinate on his own yet. How did your dog progress? Any tips you may have would be much appreciated

Did your dog recovered 100%.?

I’d say pretty close to full recovery. He has a bit of a hunch in his back still, and we have to be careful with him. He can’t roughhouse with a bigger dog for instance. I still carry him up and down stairs. Most importantly, he has a good quality of life. He walks well and enjoys his pack.

Just found your video! I’m torn, heartbroken, devastated!! 😢😢 what an awful feeling. My almost 5 year old shih tzu had surgery one week ago, no feelings in his legs not being interactive. I’m so depressed!
