They're androids. Before They're destroyed everything they've experienced is uploaded and new bodies are rebuilt. It seems that usually an android reboots with no memory of it's previous "self". Yet apparently 2B retains her memory. I suspect that 2B has retained her memory throughout an endless life and death cycle.

Fun fact, in the game you could self destruct whenever you wanted. It put you down to 1 hp until you healed, but it also got rid of 2B's skirt until the next time you die, so you could look at her ass even more. When a game has some kind of fanservice on command feature, you know you are in for a treat. That said, this was/is a Yoko Taro game/anime. You ought to know you were in for a treat regardless just from that, lol.

One is for when you peek at 2B's panties enough times (it counts one each time she pulls away from the camera), and one for if you were running around with 9S with no shorts for like an hour (did this one accidentally. Forgot the guy had longer shorts, nope turned out that was his underwear. They were technically still shorts, were they called boxers?)

This isn't a spoiler, so don't worry. It's just info about how the endings of the games worked, not what happens in them. The game has an ending for every letter of the alphabet. Most of them are joke endings with no impact on the canon story. If you've ever seen a meme or whatever where there's a cut to a credits screen and all the credits scroll by super fast before showing something like "[S]orry Not Sorry" or a similar caption, that's a reference to the Nier Automata joke endings, cuz they all do that. You get some funny dialogue, it plays the credits super fast, and then shows the title of the ending with the letter of the alphabet the ending corresponds to in [brackets]. There are 3 canon endings/routes. One route you play from 2B's perspective, one from 9S', and a 3rd which takes place after both, which leads you to the true ending. The scenes in the episode where it's just 2B or 9S are scenes we only got in their respective routes. For example, in 2B's route, the first you play, you only meet 9S when he helps you against the buzzsaw arm, and you don't get the scene we see before that in the anime with 9S watching the machine trying to fix the other until you play his route. The anime is merging the 2 for ease of storytelling because they both largely tell the same stories just from 2 different main perspectives.

1. I pronounce it the way the devs and creator pronounce it which is "auto-MAH-tah" 2. This game literally carried me through 2020 quarantine and changed my life. Along with Perspna 5, it's my absolute favorite. I cried at the end.

This is one of my three favorite games of all time, and it's absolutely scary how 1-on-1 this episode is. I could even tell you the individual containers 2b is standing on. Because of this the 3d also bothers me less, simply because I think they're genuinely the models of the game itself, from the mechs to the corridors, that simple knowledge makes it almost quaint to me, despite me absolutely HATING cgi in anime. Right now I am still at the same place emotionally as I was before the episode, on the one hand I feel like this insanely accurate approach is interesting and exciting, but on the other hand I feel like being a shot for shot remake isn't the best way to tell this story. But then they do things like add in the 26 endings by having a live action puppet of 2b and 9s perform the 26 endings and I think "YES, brilliant, perfect way to keep that idea intact". Ps, of the 26 endings (one for each letter of the alphabet) there are only 5 serious ones, the rest are joke endings, to do those as after credits skits, is genious. Episode 1 brought us through the prologue, which is pretty railroady, what really interests me is the next episode, where you'd have more freedom, I think that will really show us what kind of anime this will be. If done right this could be the most philosophically full anime I've ever seen. ... also, yes, 2bs ass has been my animated desktop background for the past 5 years, what off it?

Judging by what they showed here, and in the op, I'd guess they'll mostly focus on the main story line, with some side missions and little to no focus on the exploration aspect. But I guess we'll see.

@@eclipsewaves I do indeed hate the cgi I saw in trigun, but the difference is that trigun isn't using the models of a game I love, and there is a big difference between using cgi for some robots that are intended to look wonky anyway, and using it constantly for the main character. I always loved how Vash the Stampede looked, thought it was one of the best main character designs I'd seen in anime. But I think his 3d model just looks like the most pathetic edgy teenager of all time.

I missed 2b😭 she was such an absolute gem of a character, too bad people always reduced her to her ass and boobs or some kind of boring character(even though she was the most developed character with a lot of depth : if you actually paid attention and tried to comprehend her dialogues as well as finishing the game.) she was puzzle box eventually being completed the more you went into the game. Rather than developing along the story, you gradually learn more about her pieces that she keeps hidden.

Hoping you do play the game one day because even if the anime adaption is good it will never be as good as the game. The way it uses game mechanics to tell it’s story is a one of a kind experience, because of this most content will be cut as well as the best part of the entire game, the final ending, Ending E, which is something truly truly special.

I don't think it's really a spoiler but, they aren't clones, or copies, and it's certainly not a spoiler to say they aren't human, they are YoRHa type androids. They just have spare bodies that they transfer to (they can even do this as a form of transportation), however their memories need to be backed up separately unless they are using a dedicated transfer station, otherwise they lose their memories when their consciousness moves to another body. The Black Box houses a digital version of a soul basically, and that gets transferred to their new body. It's more like reincarnation than duplication, less soma, more... honestly I don't know too many other games that deal in death/reincarnation in this way, it's basically taking the concepts of respawning and reloading a previous save in a video game and using it for drama.

@@kudanez2085 I don't think there is hate about cgi in itself. Just dissapointment with bad animation whether it be hand-drawn or CGI. All the drawn animations here looked great (except that one running scene). But *some* of the animations with 3d models looked 'wonky' (I guess), weird lighting and or sloppy movement of the model that looked unnatural. It also doesn't help that the characters switch between drawn and 3d models suddenly between a cut, that just throws most people out of the immersion. For example 8:39 2B gets into the mech thing, camera switch, and suddenly she is a 3d model.

You should, it's one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had, but the story really does get its impact from the fact that it's a game, more than any other game I know. I have no idea how they'll try to get that across in the anime, it doesn't even make sense. Can't really explain why though without spoilers.

As far as the pronounciation goes... I couldn't care less. But I'm one of those "weird" people who don't care if someone speaks the x in Hunter x Hunter or Spy x Family out loud either. :) Those "blindfolds" are visors with some additional optical features compared to the regular android eyes, as far as in-game lore goes. 7:28: Funfact: In the game you actually can see his under-pants. You just have to use the self-destruct when playing as him, which despite it's name will not kill you, but put you to 1 HP and destroy his pants. I'm not joking. There are no Human versions of them and no VR. They were created as androids from the ground up. Before they blew up, 9S uploaded 2B's memory to the bunker, so they could just put her data into a new body. Due to a lack of bandwidth (on account of the jamming) however 9S was unable to upload his own data as well, so they had to fill his next body with an older back-up copy of his data, made about the time when he watched that one robot pour oil over the other one near the beginning. That's why he has no memory of anything that happened between then and waking up in the bunker. So to him that scene at the end was his first meeting with 2B. I suspect they'll give the big lore-dump next episode, but here goes: The story plays in the year 5000something.... or was it 15000something? I can't remember off the top of my head, but something millenia in the future. Some centuries prior aliens came to Earth and sent out machine lifeforms to fight for them. Humanity was driven to the brink of extinction and the last few survivors retreated to the moon, where they life today. To fight in their stead, the Humans created androids and Earth has essentially become a giant battlefield on which robots and androids fight each other for their respective alien and Human masters. Also due to the use of some superweapon or the other, Earth's rotation has stopped so there is no day-night cycle anymore.

The CG actually looks pretty good most of the time imo. Only one that could use some work is the flight mechs. I'm fine with it though. Fun fact: even the NieR community can't agree on how to say "Automata". Most say auto-ma-ta, but automata is also in direct reference to automaton (as in a self-replicating machine), so I prefer to just pronounce it like that and drop the "on", which makes it automa-ta. Honestly though, It's meant to be confusing so no one should give anyone too much flack for saying it "wrong".

@@eizy1010 I cannot disagree more with Donal Zuramp, I'd say that this game more than any other game ever created, is one you need to play to really appreciate. I can say without hyperbole that there has never been another game where the very fact that you're playing a game is as essential to the experience as Nier:automata and I have no idea how they'll try to get that across in an anime. The true ending of Nier:Automata can honestly be life changing, but only if you experience it as something you yourself are playing through.
