The resident Tolarian Fairy Vandel from Dominaria United - Ivy Gleeful Spellthief - had taken some time off from pestering the student and staff to lead our latest commander build - where she'll be demonstrating her considerable spell-doubling skills to our opponents.
In this build, we'll be aiming to get maximum use of Ivy's ability to double up on targeted spells - primarily by ensuring our build is chock full of spells for her to copy. That of course means we'll be running your standard assortment of aura's to load up our creatures, and in turn Ivy, with all manners of buffs, as well as creatures that mutate to beef up our creatures base stats and double up on their mutate triggers as we copy them. And once we've loaded up our creatures and Ivy with all manners of buffs and protection, they should have no issues using their superior stat-blocks to demolish our opponent's life totals.

Gargos, Vicious Watcher would be a good beat stick in this deck! I hope that we get to see a Tor Wauki deck soon. Bolas's Citadel would be a great way to storm off, especially with Tor's lifelink. But the unique trick I want to do is to play Hostility in the 99, with Tor in play Flame Rift would put 45 power on board for only two mana! 😎

I thought about Gargos as top end source of removal and while he did not make the cut, he would make a fine addition! And that combo is pretty sweet too - and easy to get to in our colors thanks to tutors!

Tricksey and fun without being just a grindy value engine. I have held onto my Zada, Hedron Grinder deck for admittedly far too long for all the weird things you can do with that deck, but this seems like it's own unique challenge that scratches the same itch.

Great list! I think a great option for this deck that you might have dedicated more time to might have been clones. When Ivy mutates under another creature, she ceases being legendary, meaning that if she can be cloned, you can start racking up exponential value as one copy of targeted spells becomes three copies, plus an extra instance of all the mutate triggers already in the pile. Some great options would include Artisan of Forms for instance, which is cheap (in mana and dollars), and synergizes perfectly with our gameplan. This also has the benefit of making the deck a lot more resilient, since removing an Ivy only removes one instance of her, and preserves a full mutated stack to copy later and pick right back up. As a parting thought, consider that clone spells that target, such as croaking counterpart or Repudiate/Replicate, will create a copy of Ivy *for each of your Ivy's*. Just a fun thought to mull over.

Glad you enjoyed it! The idea has been pitched by my playgroup but currently it seems like it would be too much of a production to make viable at this time. Still, as the channel grows it would certainly be something I would consider... Cut-Rate Colosseum has a nice ring to it....

Invisible Stalker is a 2drop with built in Hexproof and Unblockable, definitely a good add. Love the tech!

Glad you enjoyed it! While I agree, Invisible Stalker is less good than it could be in this deck due to it being a human and thus impossible to mutate on to. Its still good for a great target for our Aura's though, do feel free to add it in if you feel so inclined!

@@GrazzetMTG you know I completely forgot to check for human, I'm brand-new to Mutate. I've still found it to be brutal with some of the auras, but I'll have to keep in mind I can't mutate onto it, that definitely hurts.

Good for this deck is sorcery for 3 mana that is explore+ put +1/+1 on creature+ you gain 2 life for 3 mana

I agree, Scale the Heights would be another good addition for the build for the extra land drops and Draw it provides when copied with Ivy - the life and counter being nice little additions as well!

So I actually did something similar to this with a Killian, Ink Duelist deck. His ability to reduce spells that target creatures by 2 works with the Bestow and Mutate mechanic, so I made my creature base nearly all creatures with those abilities.

That would be an interesting take in Killian. In the build I did for him I went more "kill spell" heavy but I can see a more aura/bestow/mutate dedicated build working as well.

I'll be the evil guy and point out that small, cheap infect creatures (glistening elf or even better blighted agent) are really cool targets for mutate :D

That does certainly work, though the downside is that your creatures are going to be more fragile as well as deadly. That and your playgroup may hate you, but then again you're playing infect so it comes with the territory.

I would say that this build falls within a power level 5 - 6 - Ivy's ability being very solid but being vunelable to being focused and to builds focused around edict effects that can ignore our creatures protection. Sholdred would be nice to cover but that nearly $50 price tag will make that difficult on a budget....

I am confused with Ivy and mutate. If we copy a mutate unto Ivy, lets say a Gemrazer, and we put Ivy under creating a Gemrazer with Ivy's effect, won't it stop us from copying future spells? Ivy specifies that the copy must targets Ivy, but its no longer an Ivy, its a Gemrazer now... help me understand please

Good question! The full rules for that can he found here: magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/ikoria-lair-behemoths-mechanics-2020-04-02 - but for the short version - any time a card refers to itself by name, it specifically referring to itself (regardless of what its name is changed into via mutate, stickers, or through other means). So when mutating onto Ivy, even is the mutate is on top, Ivy's effect still applies since it refers to the card itself regardless of name. Hope that helps! It can be a but confusing since mutate is a complicated mechanic.

Sorry about the confusion - it lets us copy Ivy while she's on the stack to get a second copy of her, which when looking over the script I saw that it sounded like it made a copy of her on the field (which it does not do). Its still a good way to get an extra non-legendary copy of her in play though.
