0:54 Yeah, you are officially a rally fan for sure. "Those were clean rolls, he's fine. Keep going!" That's not a valid statement in most motorsports, but very true in rally. If you land wheels down, you're fine. A good driver downshifts to 1st *during* the roll just in case they do end up wheels down.

I used to co-drive in SCCA amateur events. There was a joke that the driver always figures out how to make sure the impact is on *your* side, instead of his. I still recall an event here in the Georgia mountains where we were waiting for the start of our stage, and we heard a big crunch. Finish of the stage was about 200ft. further up the mountain. One of our competitors had put his car into the trees up there. We saw one of his headlights roll off of the hill in front of us. Course worker ran out and kicked it away, ran back to start us. "Took me twelve seconds to do that, we'll take it off your time!" 🤣

Great video. Love rally. When he was living with me, my son had a 'street-legal' rally car. However, he used to take my car to drive to work, leaving me the Mirage rally car to climb into and out of the roll cage. Luckily, 5 point seat belts are illegal in a road car, otherwise, it would have been a nightmare when wearing a skirt.!!! 😆
@janemiettinen5176 Жыл бұрын
Mom drove rally when I was a kid, I was strictly horse-girl myself. Sometimes she had to drive me to school with the racer (first was tiny Sunbeam, second was Ford Escort), I was mortified; just the noise made sure everybody looked and kept looking, Im sure coming to the yard with bullhorn, singing off-key wouldve been less noticeable.. just in time to watch me climbing over the roll-cage, maybe getting stuck and definitely not being elegant or graceful. When youre a teen, youre being super self aware and critical of even the smallest issue. Luckily I was sucha tomboy, there was never a skirt to add to my humiliation! And of course, the amount of questions asked by my schoolmates was unbelievable! Not just the crowd I usually socialized with, but much older kids (inc. my crush) came to inquire “Was it you this morning?” and other stuff. Good times, tho back then I wasnt as fond of it at all :)

Rallying in snow, ice and darkness actually totally makes sense. Depending on where you are in Sweden you may just get 2-3 hours of daylight in midwinter. To get a full rally you really need those dark hours. The most spectacular crash I''ve seen is not surprisingly a group B crash (that era produced a whole bunch of spectacular crashes), when Marc Surer went a little sideways in a slight bend, hit a tree which cut the rear half of the car off, and engulfed the entire car in a big fireball. Surer was badly injured and his co-driver unfortunately didn't make it. Not all accidents affect the driver and co-driver. Björn Waldegård said in an interview that he used to drive at full speed over huge snakes that crossed the roads. One day one of those snakes got tangled on one of the wheel axles. When the stage was over and the mechanic checked the car, the (now very annoyed) snake came out from the wheel arch and bit him. After that Waldegård always slammed the brakes when driving over a snake, that would tear the snakes apart. Oh, and you may want to check out the weird Swedish sport of Ice racing. Make a race track on a frozen lake, put ridiculously long studs on your tires, and race around the lake! kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3Xalp9noqiBrZI

These cars all have a full safety cell, basically like a crazy strong roll cage that is welded to the front and rear shock mounts. That's how the cars can survive those crazy jumps. They have good protection for side impacts too. About 8 years ago I was in a shop that makes custom rally certified cells. Back then they asked about 10k Euro to build one for you, I imagine prices are a bit higher now. Also, the stock chassis is spot welded, and I think for rally cars they actually seam weld the chassis to make it even stiffer.

Rolling over is actually very uncomfortable - but a very safe way to loose energy. Blunt impact is a lot more dangerous. To prevent it the hay bales are used. big, heavy - and able to absorb a lot of energy safely. And of cause, dirt cheap in comparison to factory-made barriers. If they weren't hit (or burnt) the farmers take them back to feed their animals. Racing cell-cages, harness belts, racing seats, helmets and HANS systems make motorsports a lot safer.

Citroën were a sort of came-out-of-nowhere team that had no recent major motorsport background but for a few years, especially with Sébastien Loeb, were the manufacturers champions. Then they more or less closed shop. Unlike other manufacturers, they never really transferred their rally success to showroom models, so no halo models from the sport success. Having said that, their latest progressive hydraulic cushion suspension did have its origins in the rally cars. Citroën is a true left field manufacturer that cocks a snoot at orthodoxy, but to those who can put up with their idiosyncrasies, they're the most comfortable cars south of a Roller - and for a tenth of the price. A Marmite car brand - you either love them or hate them.
@mirkozlikovski95532 жыл бұрын
everything correct.... except that they "came-out-of-nowhere"!!! they have a rather long and respectable history of rallying in many rally championship categories and (especially) in Cross Country rallying....from 50-ties and 60-ties with DS, from 70-ties with another "unlikely" rally car - CX, then majestic Cross Country rallying domination of ZX Rally Raid in 90-ties (36 wins out of 42 races with 4 Paris-Dakar wins) and, before the "decade" of WRC domination, with Saxo Kit car and with FWD Xsara groupe A, that even managed to beat AWD WRC beasts in two WRC rallies (Spain and Corsica in 1999)... after that they went into WTTC and took 3 manufacturer titles.... Citroen Sport is (was, since Stellantis doesn't really let them thrive) dope!!! and they are my favorite rally and production brand, as you said "completely left field" and basically shining, both in world of racing sport cars, as well as in comfort of the ordinary cars...

Because when its winter, its dark when you go to work, and its dark when you go home from work 7:04 Those cars are not very heavy, i seen even worse position when 10-15 dudes just push the car up, and away they go. Citroën and peugeut is the same cars. So is Hyundai and Kia. Skoda, Seat and VW is also basically the same, but some differences. The only diffrance from a Citroën and a peugeut in the same range is some badges and some trim. Its also true for Hyundai and Kia... But the races are usually tied to the brand, not the manufacture. So even if the car is literally made in the same factory, sometimes they race head to head. The some manufactures like Opel buy cars from what ever manufactures and just brand them with there own brand the widen there cars besides the one they make them self. This is mostly common for really small cars or low volume cars like family busses.
