Oh my god I will send this to everyone who asks me why I play Kind Words. Tbh I have been struggling with understanding why I like it myself. I always feel like there's no progress when I play these games but I think I get it now what their true purpose is. I mean I have no problem with accepting the way I consume media but it's always nice to learn why I actually choose to play/watch something in specific in the first place. Thank you for making this, you are awesome!

Thank you so much!!! I've been playing more Kind Words too for its healing affect. It's true we're used to games have goals and progress bars in the game, but the progress of a game like Kind Words is something only we can track for ourselves in our minds - progress towards achieving calm or joy. 😊

Loved the video so much! First time hearing about iyashikei, and it's amazing how many games and shows that I watch fall under that label. It'll definitely be interesting to see how some countries respond to what's going on now in the world and people's demand for more ways and time to practice self care both at home but also at work and school too.

It's good to hear that you're feeling better, and it's cool to learn about the Iyashikei genre, it looks like I should take a deeper look into it. There's a game that I've heard of that you might wanna play: it's an indie game called Driftwood by sokpop.

Thanks!! I'll look into it 😁

I think Slime Rancher might fit into this genre. Playing it certainly fills me with a strange (almost) worry-free feeling.

@@ScreenTherapy Yeah but the story is heart-wrenching. I think it's the first (and only, as of yet) game to make me cry.

Welcome back, Screen Therapy! I'm so glad you're doing well, and I'm even more glad that you're back making more amazing, thought-provoking content! This is precisely why notifications are on! Honestly, this topic couldn't have come at a better time for me. Right now, I'm in a pretty chaotic situation in my life: I'm starting my first college semester, and the first day of class already got cancelled because of local fires. Add on the fact that everything has to be done online and the fact that I don't have many friends, and you have the reasons, among many, that fuel my anxiety, stress, and frustration; that doesn't even include issues in my personal life. Right now, I really feel like I too need a moment of healing. I actually read this article on your blog a few days after I first found your channel, and I thought to myself, "How cool would it be if Screen Therapy made this article and some others into a video format?" Well, you posted this, and I can say that it's really cool! I'm glad that your uploading stuff like this, and I'd love to see some of your other articles put into video format. No rush, though! Take your time! Again, welcome back. I wish I could've greeted you when the videos were first released, but I was already busy with college stuff. Hopefully I can find time to watch more of your videos, like right now. I always look forward to your next insightful video or blog post 🥰

I'm worried about human interaction and connection being commoditized. More and more content comes out that puts a spotlight on the main cast having great friends and adventures that develop their relationships, and while seeing realistic and relatable characters is great, there should be more campaigns for mental health and to encourage people to reach out to those around them to prevent people from substituting meaningful relationships with media and consumerism.

Very interesting perspective! I think about this sometimes, as well. I, personally, lean towards hoping media literacy and socio-emotional education helps. If we learn how to more mindfully interact with media we might have a better chance at understanding when our emotional needs would be better met outside of TV or games.

Here in uk we have a whole bunch of mental health campaigns going on at any one time, many of them focused on men since their suicide rates due to mental health are growing alarmingly fast. But the thing is: not everyone is ready to reach out, we don't want to burden our friends with our issues, especially if the issues are recurring, and healing-minded media has the potential of bridging that gap provided it doesn't turn toxic and exploitative.

@@spliter88 Thank you very much for adding to this conversation! I think you provide a very, very good point! Like you said, I hope that maybe someday, healing media like titles in the Iyashikei genre could be used mindfully and intentionally for self-support and minor mood management. That's one of the reasons I write about Positive Media Psychology here. Learning about these concepts helped me regulate my relationship with media and get the most of it without overdoing it - hoping to spread the word. :)
