In fact, delivery of the 1st 6 units will not only be imminent but actually will be deployed(initially at a land base in eastern Kyushu) next year. Defense also does not have to be purely reactionary, ie. putting your hands up to block an incoming punch. It can also be proactive, ie. kicking someone in the balls before they start to throw that punch. The line between proactive defense and offense blurs a bit, thus one really has to be careful. But this shouldn't preclude it altogether. Complete agreement with you on China.

@@dinoco3672 Japan had quickly learned the value of the aircraft carrier as early as the 30s, especially in the tactical value they had. Well Japanese carriers tended to be similar to other countries carriers at the time. They had a well rounded operation that allowed them to quickly land and launch fighters at a timely manner and how to use the fleet they had to support the carriers. Overall the quality of a Japanese carrier was on par with American carriers, with American carriers being heavier and durable able to carry more fighters and munitions, and Japanese carriers being lighter and overall a little faster with the Shokaku class being much faster. The point stands however that of all the nations to have experience in carrier operations. The one with the best experience next to the US is the Japanese. Well the UK did use carriers it wasn't at the scale of that of the Japanese or the US and other nations only ever fielded at least 2 to 3 max. Only the US and Japanese fielded multiple carriers in a war, and thanks to being a US ally since the end of WW2 the Japanese has likely had plenty of opportunities to participate in wargames with US carrier fleet perhaps even participating in carrier defense and operations never mind that the US has a base in Japan that allows it to dock super carriers so, the Japanese likely haven't been in the dark all this time. They likely can quickly adapt what they knew of carrier operations in the past they had and adapt US style of operations to create a new type necessary for their needs.

At the very least when you look at tonnage, Japan has one of the largest navies in the world. Personally I think it obvious that the Japan of today, is not the same as the Japan that attacked Pearl Harbor. Given what China is up to, I think it would be idiotic for Japan to not upgrade their abilities. Last I read the Japanese government has been working on a plan to revise their constitution to be able to build full aircraft carriers much like our ( United States) super carriers. After WWII Japan was forbidden to construct full aircraft carriers. I’d like to see this change given the threats from China on some of the more distant Japanese home islands.

This information is quite dated as the approval to modify the flight deck of the first completed ship was at the very end of 2018 and budget approval in 2019, they are currently testing and operating with US Marine f-35b's on this ship with the modified deck. Video is well made but I would have recommended to include another section at the end to include the current situation that's been known for years now.

Coincedentally enough. The IJN Ise and Hyuuga were battleships in the Imperial Japanese Navy. They were later schedualed to become aviation battleships but were suck towards the end of the war. So the Hyuuga class carriers being built on destoryer hulls (Pls fact check me) is kind of cool

Ise & Hyuga were converted from pure BBs 2 artial aviation BBs by the removal of their 2 after main turrets w/ a towering seaplane platform, & fought in this form @ Leyte Gulf, as part of the northern decoy force under Adm. Ozawa. Remarkably, they survived this action, being later neutralized in home waters. The Japanese Navy, of whatever era & under whatever name, looks majestic @ sea & upholds a long & potent tradition, which carries much weight. There’s actually plans for a third izumo The name is rather ironic but actually makes sense since the third izumo will be named after a really famous battleship that is well respected worldwide. As a battleship she had been kept back until Leyte Gulf and her doomed fate in Okinawa, but now she is being brought to life, more powerful than ever before. The Yamato is back! (Edit: they cancelled it and simply forgot about it)

Adding a third Izumo class will create problems for JMSDF like manpower and more escort ships (Akizuki class and more Aegis destroyers). That's why they extensively used automation on their Mogami class frigates as the whole JSDD is still struggling in manpower and recruitment issues.

​@clarkjosephkent2876 I think they're referring to the fact the the Battle of Leyte Gulf was the first major (If you could even call it that) action the Yamato saw in the Pacific theater. Both the Yamato and the Musashi took part in the battle, ending with the Musashi being sunk by American dive bomber and torpedo aircraft, and the Yamato surviving until April of 1945 when the Yamato was sunk by American carrier based aircraft while attempting to defend the island of Okinawa and preventing American forces from landing during Operation Tēn-go.

Its about time...Japan, South Korea and Taiwan need to defend themselves, each other since being the first line of defense/containment of China. South Korea is planning a Light Carrier to go along with it's two Helicopter Carriers and Japan is modifying 2 of it's 4 Helicopter Carriers to handle F-35B. It is important for all three nations to build up their defense capabilities, thus relieving US and NATO allies from this duty.

Rearming Japan only serves the interests of the US military at the moment. In order to counter America's desire to have countless bases surrounding China Amerika now wants Japan to rearm themselves. After pouring money into China from moving American manufacturing to China and taking advantage of all of that cheap Chinese labor the American taxpayer is now being told that China is a military threat and the US taxpayer has to foot the bill and throw huge money at the US military industrial complex. Having governments being owned outright by Corporations and multinational banks is a very bad idea which we've seen in action since WW1. If the quoted specs are true, a total displacement of under 30,000 tons is awfully small for the number of supported aircraft and operations. Wonder what is being shortchanged, a small aircraft carrier would be twice the size. Japan is a US ally now. It has been since the 1960s at least. That's not to say I think Japan needs a navy that rivals the US but there's definite room for it to make improvements. Having said that I don't think having aircraft carriers will help it against current threats like China. China has a ton of hypersonic missiles that would make short work of the Japanese navy. As far as fighter and other fixed wing craft they're better off launching them directly from Japan or nearby islands. It would be difficult for even a hypersonic missile to sink an island.

The Japanese Self Defense Navy is a pretty effective conventional force to be reckoned with. I wouldn’t want them for an enemy. I believe in this case regarding these vessels, it’s wise to take baby steps. Other ships of this class may be in the planning stages. I don’t think that they are aircraft carriers as most people view them, but they carry helicopters and tilt rotor aircraft. These vessels can operate in many capacities like the helicopter carriers in the U.S. Navy which also carry amphibious vehicles. Only time will tell.

In 2018, the Japanese government decided to modify the Izumo-class DDH to allow it to operate F-35B fighter jets. Modification work turning Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter destroyer JS Kaga into an F-35B aircraft carrier were completed at a dock in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, located in the western part of Japan’s Honshu Island. The modification of the second ship, Kaga, is currently in the in final work, which includes applying the heat-resistant coatings and changing the shape of the bow section. This work is expected to be completed by end of March 2023. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force will operate the F-35Bs that will go aboard the Izumo class. First, six aircraft will deploy in FY 2024 and two in FY 2025 for a final total of 42 aircraft.

Japan is the most powerful ally in the Taiwan sphere. I'm betting they have already planned the conversion of these ships to real aircraft carriers with the Pentagon. If China attempts to expand in the region, there will soon be about 40 additional F35s ready to deploy anywhere in the region. But that is only my personal hypothesis.

think about this - Japan had 2 nukes dropped on it, capitulated in the ww2, has no oil, not a lot of farmland, builds 4 quite modern aircraft carriers - manufactures everything themselves russia - won in the ww2, didn't get nuked, has lots of oil, lots of farmland, has all the natural resources it needs in its lands, has 50% larger population - has 1 carrier that is falling apart, smuggles tank targeting systems from abroad, can't sustain its industry without imported parts

Izumo is not an aircraft carrier. It's an escort ship equipped with a helicopter. Also, currently Japan does not have an army according to Article 9 of the Constitution of Japan. So it's not 'Navy', it's 'Maritime Self-Defense Force'. The Japanese navy was dismantled after World War II.
